We don't actually believe that, that's just traditional thought, like Greek mythology. The origin of the name 'Ararat' seems to be Armenian, though considering the name is found in the Bible it is mostly likely of Hebrew descent. What makes it Armenian is the fact that it's always there. It's a beautiful sight to behold, especially in the wintertime. It's like what Mt. Olympus was the Ancient Greeks. Or what Kilauea was to native Hawaiians.

I understand that it is almost a part of Armenian identity asociating the mountain with their history. But u ust realize that long before the Armenians were on those lands, there was the Hittite Empire which lasted for centuries BC, then there was the Lydian and Lycian empires as well. Then there was the Kurdish Empire around the same time as the Armenians. I guess what I am trying to say is, the mountain 'belongs' to no one, yet is shared by everyone.

We have the longest association with the mountain though, and you have to consider that the Hittite, Lycian, and Lydian Empires never extended distantly enough to cover Ararat. The Armenian Kingdom of Urartu, which existed between 1350 B.C. and 590 B.C., then again under the Kingdom of Armenia between 190 B.C. A.D. 428. We have had the longest association with the mountain, and that's why it's so important to Armenia and Armenians. Also, I'm not sure there ever was a Kurdish Empire.

The rest made it safely to their destinations.
