  • NEWENGLANDBUDO IN REGARDS TO POSTING:

"Sakiyama Sogen Roshi performs Sanchin at the NYC Dojo"

YOU HAVE STOLEN THIS MATERIAL FROM ME. IT IS NOT YOUR PROPERTY NOR WAS IT INTENDED FOR THE PUBLIC. I ASK THAT YOU RESPECTFULLY DELETE THIS FROM YOUR LIST IMMEDIATELY IN ORDER TO AVOID FURTHER COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT.

  • Wow...amazed I found this! That's my Uncle Owen there (starting 3min 26sec) Thanks so much for posting this!

  • Spectacular execution of Sanchin kata. You can feel the strength here. Wish I could hear the original audio without the music added (brathing and cadence). Does this exist? Can't thank you enough for posting an extremely rare performance of one of Miyagi's most enigmatic students! True Old School GoJu!!!

  • I could not find the kata reference you mentioned... can you guide me?

  • @LoukopoulouK Certainly, try video: PBP7Kj3WXvQ or Search Chinen Seipai on my channel. You can get there by clicking on NewEnglandBudo and I believe it is on page 3 or 4 of the clips.

  • Yes, many memories and many smiles... Katherine

  • @LoukopoulouK Katherine-san, thank you for the nice comments. Which is a change compared to some that I receive. Please look at the comments of the clip of Chinen Sensei performing Seipai kata. Gambatte! Jim

  • In this video clip, Passai is peformed by Owen Masters, a Nidan at that time. After Heshiki Sensei left for Hawaii, Masters opened a dojo in Jamaica. The middle person peforming Pinan Shodan Bunkai is James Dardouni, a Shodan at that time. For a brief second, the person with legs crossed is me. Yakusoku Kumite is peformed by Owen Masters and Dicky Quintana, a Shodan. For brief seconds we also see Ernesto Fugazy and Mario Medious, senior black belts at that time. Katherine Loukopoulos

  • @LoukopoulouK Hello Katherine, we met many years ago at a tournament run by Ron Gaeta and Chinen was a guest. I hope that this brief clip brought back happy memories. Gambatte, Jim

  • @LoukopoulouK

One correction: The middle person in that video performing the Pinan Shodan Bunkai is actually Eugene Feijoo.

    Great video.

  • I was a student at the Satsuma Bushi Karate Dojo, Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu Dojo, 72nd St, NY City. The karate sensei, Zenko Heshiki, was interested in studying Zen, and he invited Sakiyama Sogen Roshi to stay at the dojo and to teach for one year. Only on rare occasions did Sakiyama Sogen Roshi performed Sanchin Kata. All of the participants were Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu Students. After Sakiyama Roshi left, Heshiki sensei moved to Hawaii to study Zen at depth. Katherine Loukopoulos

  • Oh how I would have loved to have the original audio on it to hear his breathing. I trained Shuri-ryu myself and we have the sanshin kata also, almost identical to this one.

  • You can check youtube for this version of sanchin and see a modern version of Sanchin.

  • FWIW, I was there at many of the Reverend's events in 1970 to 1973. The Rev. did not want to teach nor demonstrate Goju-Ryu Kara-Te, but that was the ONLY way he can get people to attend Zen. All of the people that came to "sit" Zen had only come tot see the Rev.'s Goju-Ryu. After the Goju-Ryu presentations, 98% of them all left the Zen teachings and the Rev. became broken hearted and went back to his homeland. The Reverend was something else in real time Goju-Ryu life.....

  • This is exactly what you can call "the old way"

    truly inspiring.

  • Hi Sensei JP,

So glad that you keep me in mind when sending goju, I could use all the info that you would be willing to give, since I am supposed to be promoted to Shodan in gojuryu in June at our dojo at BSB under Sensei Donahue, you always have such valuable footage of karate, I really appreciate that about you, (such a valuable source of info) and am I always grateful of all that you send my way.

Hope that I am able to meet and train with you some day.

    Arigato gozai masu, Cyndy Gray

  • A truly inspirational demonstration of

GO-JU by Sakiyama Sogen Roshi. Many thanks for posting.
