Karl aka 'Gus McKenzie was a proud Glaswegian from Springburn ! I was privileged to meet him. He was a very nice man and not at all 'show businessy'....
There are only two places in Scotland; Glasgow and all the rest! Angus (Karl) was all that is good from Scotland, apart from me, of course, haha. Loved him in the 60's and still do. R.I.P.
Karl's unique vowel sounds are a special part of his singing. Did he have an unusual accent when speaking, or were his pronunciations when singing an affectation of an Englishman trying to sound "country"?
He was Scottish not English, his speaking voice was very similar in accent to his singing voice. There are of course many Scottish accents, he was from Glasgow although he lived most of his life in England.
@GibsonAndVega Karl was from Glasgow the largest ( and best!) city in Scotland.
He was a very unique singer, who had avaried life before he "made it" ,He went to sea in the Merchant Navy as a boy, then served with The Argyll And Sutherland Highlanders in Korea(the Argylls had a very tough time in Korea, and,as ever, acquitted themselves with distinction. Respect to him for that alone!
Karl was sheer class, sadly missed.

I saw Karl sing live back in the sixties. Some dork tried to heckle him and Karl's "shut your face" was a very definite Glasgy.
