The way the phrase "third quarter" is used is as if he's goign to desperately defend the net to avoid someone scoring. tell me, why would you defend the net THAT desperately in the third quarter of a game with four quarters? They're talking about hockey. They probably used "quarter" because it sounder better. And it does. "third period" doesn't fit.
