  • Its good but, your missing the main ingredient... minimalism, you make everything way more complex than it should be with your improvising, its boring, just chill out and don't process it so much

  • He's rekording sideways LOL

  • Torley, please make a sheet from what you did, starting from 6:00 till the end, i'll donate you!

  • what keyboard are you using?.

  • Torley you awesome

  • hey torley, great video again as always. sorry to bother you but i just wanted to ask you what piano VST you are using in this video here? thanks

  • dude how are you so good at this

  • I think there is a major misjudgement about *what* exactly makes Philip Glass' music have that ''certain something'' that alot of other, even more complex music does not have (to alot of people at least ). Often is thought that the key element is the simplicity in either the repetatieve chord patterns or the way the piano plays these chords, or parts of chords.

While this does have some influence, the true key to his ''emotional'' sound lies in the chord progressions itself

  • whats that song at 1:18

  • What's the name of the song at 1:18

  • What's the name of the song at 1:18 D:

  • What's the name of the song at 1:18 D:

  • Wow, as soon as I heard the first few seconds I knew Philip Glass had some involvement in the Truman Show soundtrack.

  • btw, i have a midi keyboard and it doesn't have a pedal, meaning that i can't sustain notes, meaning that won't sound that good :(

  • how much should i practice till i can i play polyrythms like that???

  • @bboyfabolous1994 You need to practice 3 years, 7 months, nine days, and 11.1 minutes. Then you will own it. Remember, no eating, drinking, sleeping or other activity during that time. Only at the piano keyboard. Best wishes.

  • @greengringo2003 damn! I'll do my best! Thanks!

  • Although I would like to agree that some of your improv does have Glass like qualities, there was way too much development occuring in your piece. A lot of Glass' music is more a wall of sound, it's there... but it's not. It doesn't really develop or have drama in it. Although you have rhythmic patterns in arpeggios and changing time signatures it doesn't specifically make it Glass. If youlisten to Glass a lot you realise that the feeling you have between the start and end is the same almost

  • I love his Pjs! Hate him for playing that good!

  • what idiot , please remove this

  • hey, wow your playing ist wonderful! can you tell me the notes from 1:20 !

  • 1:55 dude your on a crack. :D

  • Comment removed

  • lol nice, funny look on your face around 1:27, just bought a keyboard for when its too loud to drum, music is god.

  • anyone know what keyboard this is?

  • @Crusherdub M-Audio 88es. Get it if you're looking to play for fun. Don't if you're looking to develop piano technique.

  • Stop holding the camera like that! lol "Music is the space in between the notes."

  • Cool demonstration. It´s realy a basic of many music kompositions. ;-)

    regards,

    Souli (Uwe)

  • there's not much of a difference , i've taught myself how to play by ear and i've "composed" my own music....i suggest you not judge me over a simple comment. ^_^

  • How to play like ... and how to compose like. That's the difference.

  • i plan to learn how to play like that xD it looks fun and sounds magnificent

  • Ahem..

There is much, much more to Phillip Glass than Pruit Igoe, actual fans know this. I think the best word to describe his work is variety; it's neither easily recognisable nor simplistic though.

  • Note: the track is called "floe" I believe :-) That would be sweet if you could tutorial that

  • Wow! Coke FRENZY! lol just kidding, thanks for the guide, it's awesome. Philip did a piece of music for a film called 'La Chiesa' (The Church) which I wholeheartedly recommend ;-). The piece you play at 1:17 reminded me of it. Thanks again

  • 7:24

  • Great piece Torley! Tell me, what Glassian piece are you alluding to at 1.32 in the video, I can pick out just about all the others. Thanks.

  • 2:56 D.Y.I. (Do Yt Iourself)

  • Philip Glass is essentially just pop music progressions without much complementary material. There is absolutely nothing experimental or unique about what he does, aside from how obnoxiously long his pieces are.

  • @OcularNebula I wonder if there's even any point attempting to respond to your comment in any kind of serious manner. I'm not sure if you're being satirical or just ridiculously ignorant. Perhaps you've never picked up a history book. Or perhaps you've read them all and you're making fun of the ignoramuses who frequent his videos.

  • So I've been playing piano since I was 7, so 7 years and I'm on Grade 7...(wierd) and I will never be as good as this or even be able to play something as remarkable as one of Philip Glass' pieces. <3

  • you remind me of freddiew

  • man, i wish i were that talented

  • I like it very much

  • Comment removed

  • Philip Glass music possess a crucial element: simplicity (at a first glance). It makes it immediately recognizable. The poesy of Glass music flows from the repetition of the notes. I don't know if that guy in the video is pulling Glass leg but the fact of seeing him playing on the piano and hearing Glass notes full fills me with an immense joy :-)

You drink every thing you want and you like but nothing is above the beauty, the pureness and the simplicity of water. Glass music is that water.

  • In all things, the supreme excellence is simplicity. - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

  • Hello, please, you could arrange this piece of floor in a score?

  • hehehe one day maybe you'll make one of these on my music :P I want to be a film scorer too! philip glass is my 2nd favorite composer.

  • At the part when you started the ostanato in the left hand and the simple melody in the right you mentioned Mozart and his simpleness its sort of like Saint-Sans piece The Swn (which is one of my favorite pieces to play) the story is more likely about the RIGHT hand unlike the left hand is kindof the background music or sound track more when I send you a messege

  • Can you do a tutorial on how to do these patterns

  • 1:02 he says E-minor but plays E-major. so which one is the right one?

  • your voice sounds exactly like the ancient aliens theory guy

  • awesome video

  • Lol why are you so happy lookin but I realy like this presentation it opens up your eyes and showes how you can make something so beautiful out of something yet so simple.

  • yo, how much can i get a keyboard like this for?

  • Actually, while Phillip glass has popularized this style for the younger generation, he did not solely pioneer this "sound." Minimalism, as it is called, was founded in New York in the 60's by a handful of musicians - Glass included - as an experimental music. Don't get me wrong, he was there from the beginning, but he did not create this on his own.

  • Чудо человек ))

  • what model is your piano Torley? do you hook it up to an amp or something?

  • the movie watchmen eventually led me to seeing this

  • By the way, your improve... sounds disconnected and sometimes it goes too melodic and classic... and not Philippy, for example min 8:57, 58... Yes I am mad at you! Kidding, I understand your point of view but again if one doesn't like... one has have everything else to listen to.

  • Besides his music goes beyond that, specially orchestral music. And just like he says: If u don't enjoy it, listen to something else. I know how simple it is sometimes, cause i have no music education and I can play some of his pieces and interpret his sheets...

  • You can say all u want about it and obviously your analysis is correct, I am not saying that, but guess what? A lot of people absolutely love his music. The Taj Mahal is a perfect geometric building full with simple variations in form, in patterns, etc, and yet, it is what it is.

  • 5:57

  • @W0mb0l0gy thank you

  • Youre fu**ing awesome men \m/

  • philip glass music is just a bunch of fugues chained together in an overarching melodic structure.

  • Loved it! You have an awesome sense of humourusic, I joined in with my Chrormonica. Now I too can play like Philip Glass..

  • Torley, you have some mad piano technique.

    Wish I had your teacher.

    Very entertaining videos, too.

And please keep your enthusiasm up to 13.8 out of 10!

  • This is...magical...your improv was just...wow. Loved it, you made yourself another fan, mister.

  • fantastic! Thank you for sharing this <3

lots of love from Munich :)

  • what is the song he played at 4.45 to 4.57???????

  • Are you high? :o

  • You Sir, are absolutely awesome!

  • Please!!! SHUT UP!!!

  • You have a bad cameraman

  • Love your Dream Journal

  • Love this!

  • I like the little hemiola in your improv there, which is certainly another one of the iconic devices that PG uses, but magical all the same.

  • Yeah... he invented it... and you talk about how can duplicate it... this is the joke?

  • @SrNutritivo He does seem to be making fun of Philip Glass, but you're right. Philip Glass's music is so easily recognizable and there is a simplicity to it, but at the same time, no one did it until Philip Glass did it. I like his music a lot.

  • @trr321321 I can listen to pandora with my eyes closed and know when philip comes on :P I love his music too

  • you really like the fringe theme^^

  • He talks like Freddie.

  • Love it, the camera angles could be better though :/

  • I wish someone - YOU!!!????? would put his DOMINOS from Fog of War on UTube.

  • Nicely Played #:-)

  • you're funny

  • battlestar galactica huh.... didnt c that one coming

  • You Are a fucking mad man, the osiris of piano brother. Thank you for sharing this.

  • Wow, awesome video! Never have I seen so much enthusiasm haha. Mind if I ask what notes were used from 9:55 to 10:02? I thought that section was really pretty :)

  • Hey torley, what piano VST are you using in this video and what midi/keyboard controller are you using? another awesome vid by the way

  • You're Alacrity is astounding!!!

  • 8:15 FFARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRKKKK

  • Very interesting, Thank you.

Reminds me of a story of Salinger.

  • Hey, what vst or plugin or piano You use in this video. Very very good playing:)

  • haha fabulous

I'm amazed by your affinity to the piano and music. wow. thanks for the vid.

  • why the piano is so awesome lol xd nice

  • It's funny because your initial interpretation is almost exactly the theme from The Truman Show... which Glass had a hand in. I just find it funny that what you made up as you went is actually something he wrote, lol.

  • soo EXITED.. but epic skills!!. love it

  • sounds like Carly Comando - Everday

  • you have golden hands and fingers my friend..

  • very nice!

  • /watch?v=n45bBWuNc90&feature=channel_video_title

  • Funny guy and sympathetic Glass expert!

    Just a real fan...

Thx for posting this great video! :)

  • Great video. Brought to you in "SIDE-O-VISION".

I really enjoy Philip Glass's music and I enjoyed your analysis of his numerous variations.

Of course, one can spot Philip Glass's music a mile away (as with a number of even more complex composers), but his music is still very intriguing.

  • my neck hurts...

  • Nice explanation of just some of PG's techniques. He also writes in a primative style like Carl Orff. One can imitate almost any good composer but the great ones have genius that turns the same old notes and harmonies into a unique listening experience and not just a weak parody. Lots of people do Elvis.

  • Its sort of what Beethoven would have done with "The house of the rising sun".

  • Very nice video :D

  • Thank you, sir!

  • sounds like muse

  • @simonbaird More like Muse sounds like Philip Glass.

  • Love the Piano Pants ;)

  • I'm an artist (but non-musician) creating mixtapes for class projects/short film/animation. Your short video has helped me better understand the structure of the music of Philip Glass. Thanks.

  • hahahaha, I thought this was going to be all serious intense and then "FRIENDLY GREETINGS" goofy smile, upside down screen :D lol

well im going to finish watching

  • this is the dude from second life tutorial video's?

  • hee heee <3 u torley

  • lol at his impprove he used a bit from Fringes theme song

  • Wow, AWESOME playing, i also love the glass music and that "improvised" ;) piece was just mind BLOWING!

  • Hey man, Kudos to you. I've been composing music in a Philip Glass style and I'll have to share some of my inspirations to you. Have you scored any movies before?

  • Love it. Seriously.

  • Très difficile vous sont génie...

  • Muito bom...

  • why does he remind me of einstein

  • Piano Wizard!!!!!!!!!!! You are magnificent sir.

  • The Asian version of Carlton Banks

  • @Mstacy5626 sounds amazing! So I could just get a pretty cheap keyboard/midi controller, find a nice sounding patch and I'm good to go?

  • @Pejvaque if you buy a cheap keyboard it will probably not have velocity sensitive keys and it will be harder to put emotion in your songs if you know what I mean.

  • @ImW4tchingYOU I do know what you mean, recommendations would be nice!

  • over and over and over is right! once went into a music store said "I want some brilliant piano music" (thinking Liszt) - and walked out with Philip Glass... over and over and over ugh - sorry not my taste! Looks like it's zombie easy to play though :)

but thanks for this great lesson - just found your channel today - great stuff!!!

  • My neck hurts now.

  • could you recommend a similar sounding keyboard that's not too expensive?

  • If i had a piano/keyboard and knew how to play that ostinato

I would play it all day long

  • its so beautiful

  • You're crazy! I like it

  • When I listen to Philip Glass I feel like I can focus better.

  • great!!!! but... for god! the next time use other cameraman! this guy never did have a handycam in the hands!

  • Amazing... But I believe the "E minor" at 1:04 was actually an E Major.

    Great job, though!!!

  • @ajpianoman1 didn't you see the annotation......

  • @MAEdalgo Oh. I just saw it. My mistake.

  • this is great.... too bad my neck hurts from leaning sideways for 10 minutes

  • Amazing.

  • Does anyone know what 7:25 is from?

  • @JeffDynamics He's improvising, it's just something he's making up as he goes.

  • @BorisGodunov No but it seems like a theme that he uses over and over, he also uses it in the "Fringe Equation". Most improve is just a remix of things we already hear so I just wanted to know what the inspiration was :/

  • o.O

  • What a beast!!!! if only i cud play as good as him -___-

  • Fantastic deconstruction!

  • improvisation?? wow that was amazing dude congrats i felt captivated watching :)
