Is it counterproductive if you practice with perfect technique but, when you are playing with a band or something you don't perform with perfect technique?
I'm gonna aslk what MrUsedBooks asked again, but maybe in a different, more elaborate way:
Wouldn't playing "sloppy" (relatively to tight practice playing) outside of practice time ingrain bad habits, the same way playing good during practice should ingrain good habits?
In other words, wouldn't playing sloppy outside of practice function like a practicing developing bad habits?
im currently learning All that Remains - Six (not the solo F**K that)
anyways i practiced it slow like you said to do, for about 10 minutes, very slowly for the beginning riffs and made sure i was using the correct fingure pressure and relaxed, and made sure my picking was correct to the ebst of my abilty,
In just 10 minutes when i play the riffs at full speed there is a big difference, Great video and keep up the great tutorials
Thank you for this educational video! I've been at it for a couple of years and recently I have found myself thinking, "Hmmm, maybe I should've practiced slowly." ;') I hope it's not too difficult to break the bad habits.
Hey dude you know all about my picking at this stage, if i were to choose flight of the bumblebee as a rest of my life picking exercise and the spiders and ULTRA slow them down would that be sufficient?
It'll certainly improve your technique to take things down slowly and practice them attentively, but I would choose a piece that's harder to pick than the bumblebee. Paganini's 5th or Moto Perpetuo are great. What about that Dueling Banjos cover?
To improve your overall picking practice it! The more you practice and the more consistently, the better your results. I'd suggest you do an hour a day, every day for a couple of months. Then you see guaranteed results, promise. :)
It's actually much more efficient to periodically practice once or twice at real or even higher speeds in between slow practices. The point is to get a sense of what it feels like playing for real, since it might be very different than slow playing (like walking vs running). I've heard a few very good musicians recommend this, but i have no clue why it's not more talked about. Msg me for a fuller explanation and reasoning if you want, not enough room to post it. Trust me, it helps a lot.
I like your videos and technique strategies, and hope to use them so thank you for this.
However, I have 1 major problem with this video... if you pick note, and then stop, and then pick another note, aren't you only getting 50% volume of a string of notes? Surely you want a legato-sounding technique, so why do you stop in between notes? Instead, shouldn't you pick the first note, then immediately pick the second note, leaving no gap of noise in between? Thanks, Adam
Most people have never considered how to play a single note well - hence the pause. Stop, pay attention, improve. When develop your awareness and technique in the playing of single notes, move onto runs of notes.
Ok, so you're saying start with longish pauses so you concentrate on each individual note, and then shorten the length of the pause the better you get?
No - when you want to focus on note quality and very detailed technical awareness, you'll just have to take it very, very, very slowly. If you want to play runs, you have to put them together bit by bit and improve every bit.
All of this is part of taking apart large ideas (say, left hand technique) and breaking them down into smaller ideas that you can work on slowly.
Ok I completely understand what you're saying, but that's not quite what I'm getting at. What I want to know basically is, for example, in your video on finger independence, at 2.00 when you do the 2-1-3-4 sequence... if i slowed this video down 10 times, would I hear gaps or no gaps between notes? I'm not criticizing or anything, I would just like to know what I'm supposed to be improving to when I get to that stage.
You'd probably hear small gaps, I'm trying to make each note stand out and I'm picking them, which creates tiny gaps. When you get to that stage you just improve whatever you want. :)
ok thanks lol I hope to get that stage but probably not any time soon :(
Also, I have 1 more question... my hands/fingers are fairly small and sometimes I can't help touching the bottom of the neck (bottom=nearest side to the floor) with the upper part of my palm, if I'm trying to keep my wrist straight. This happens usually when I'm reaching for lower strings. Is this really bad? What can I do to correct this?
Ok. I just sat down for a guitar sesh and am committed to your practise ...another problem arose...I can't keep my wrist straight (parallel with arm) when making stretches. Is this bad? What can I do to correct it?
Also, by stretches, I mean frets 3 and 7 on the same string
thanks man, you're a cool dude thx for giving back to the community. I'm pretty much a beginner and gonna check out all your videos. I'm tired of learning songs and not getting anywhere so I think it's time to focus on theory and technique correct?
Tell that to classical guitarists and shredders like Rusty cooley, shawn lane, chris broderick and all those other guitarists that are better than youll ever be
Hey I posted that thread in the 'Basics' thread and you linked me to here, thanks... I'm working on the 'Digital Love' solo by Daft Punk. Obviously very fast and difficult... so I'm just going to take it slow.
Yea it really REALLY helps, i lightened my picking and use less effort to fret notes, The picking really helps notes transition between each other and makes anything less choppy. Awesome vid.
really? perhaps i need a fret job or something then... i've noticed that the notes don't necessarily ring out unless i hit em pretty firmly... legato or alternate picking... :-\
Freepower! I'm so greatful for all the wonderful info you have. I have read your stuff on UG for a long time and about a year ago I got fed up with my picking and stopped anchoring and holding the guitar in a poor position.
I'm now playing anchorless, oscillating (I think anyway..), and trying to reduce tension.
But I can't seem to get any real speed in my picking, without using a lot of arm movement anyhow.
Do you have a picking video on here somewhere? I looked but couldn't find one:(
great stuff man, I've been playing for ages, but have been relearning my techniques...the proper way... I play a 7string too (when I play electic)...what is that? a schecter?
If I ever did all of this in a single practice session my guitar would magically be fly from my hand through the window right into the trash -_-"

UG is a good website, too bad the forums are run by a bunch of douches
suzuki15 2 years ago
You DO know that I'm one of those douches, yeah?
FreepowerUG 2 years ago
Hopefully you're the exception....
suzuki15 2 years ago
I'm not sure what you mean by that. You think I'm not a douche and you hope all the other mods ARE douches? Or do you just think I'm a douche?
Imho, I think the other mods do a good job, especially considering they do it for free in their spare time.
FreepowerUG 2 years ago 4
You're only a douche if you're one of the mods that start talking shit then when the other person does the same you get so flustered you ban them.
And I'm not the only one who thinks this, but what ya gonna do? There are plenty of other guitar forums I guess.
