@expedition16 We'd have probably lost to the French. They were overall the best AND MOST ENTERTAINING side in the tournament. We'd have played Belgium in the semis by the way had Barnes started the game. Big mistake by Robson on the day. He seemed like the only one capable of breaching a resounding Argie defence marshalled by the late Cuciuffo. We'd have beaten Belgium and played in the final versus Germany or France (Germany's SF victory was a travesty. Bats had an off-day after his QF heroics.

@expedition16 France would have beaten us. West Germany were so unpredictable in that tournament so I can't say for sure. It wasn't a great England side all in all. Barnes playing only 20 odd mins vs Argentina (his only ever WC appearance) WAS A TRAVESTY!

@expedition16 I honestly think No. France and (West) Germany had no fear against big nations - hence the way both took the game to Brazil (France QF) and Argentina (West Germany Final) in games in the tournament. We bottled it v Argies - very very negative despite the cheat goal and the wonder goal. We never played until the last 20 mins. Needed to get at them in the 1st half the way (an average) Italian team did in the group stages and got a draw

It's a pity England did not decide to win the next match against the Argentine. Maradona could have been dealt with in the same way Brazil, Italy or the Boche would have sorted him out: cynically. England have never really been intersted in winning... apart from just once.

I recently watched this whole game. Paraguay slightly had more possession of the ball than England for the most part of the game. It just couldn't find the way to break England's defense each time it got to England's area and wasted its goal scoring opportunities.

Paraguay had some great chances at the start, but over all England were the best team by quite a margin

The great chance wasted by Paraguay was a shame. If I were the one who stole the ball from the keeper, I would quickly shoot at the opposing team's goal from there. Or if I were the one who made the shot on goal that was saved by the keeper, I would just shoot at the other side.

Next game shows that this was Maradona's tournament . What a way to get England out of the cup. The first and of course the display of the second goal. Against a superior Argentina team on the next game England were righfully out of the cup.

gracefully we will have to disagree with that one then, England finished the stronger team in that game and the argies just held on for their lucky victory and of course maradona hand ball shud never have stood. Strange how when teams stay longer in a competition there most prominent player is said to be the best! Make no mistake, world football was runined by masa cheating.

I really doubt about the first goal scored by Lineker, it seems as if he committed foul to the defender that was close to him by grabbing his t-shirt or arm and then pulling him down to the ground. What do you think?

I think the game was like this:

In the first half, Paraguay was a little better than England and it nearly scored several times. But in the second half, the turn of the game changed, England started to have more possesion of the ball.

No me había dado cuenta de que sos paraguayo, VenomRam. Realmente el arbitro le privó a Paraguay de su chance de revivir su esperanza en aquel partido al no cobrar el penal y eso creo que fue un gran golpe psicologico que habría bajoneado a los paraguayos.

Thanks VenomRam. I'm from Paraguay. You're right. I think if the referee had given the penalty kick to Paraguay, it would have revived its chances and from that moment forth, only one goal would have been needed to equalize. As always, only big teams are favored by referees.Someone told me that in fact Paraguay played a little better than England in the first half.

Next time, I'm sure Paraguay won't be an easy opponent for England.

The history maybe could have been different if Paraguay had scored the best chance it had.

There is something a bit weird in the third England goal, it seems as if the Paraguayan defender that was close to Lineker let him escape.
