I really hate people doing sound demos of these classic synths without recording the actual sound coming from the instrument itself, but rather their sound recorded off some speakers or amps. Not a good thing, since those speakers and the microphone of the camera will inevitably color the sound.
If you can afford to have an original 1972 Minimoog, you should be able to afford a proper direct audio recording method for your video demos of it.
I have owned several model D's, and they all had their own distinct character, probably due to different components and ageing of components.
I don't find the Voyager inferior in the tone department unless you have the filter wide open, in which case the 'D' has a brighter, more powerful sound.
Having A-B'd a model D with a Voyager, there are only subtle differences between them in sound quality. The same sort of variation that you would get between two different model D's. The Voyager was designed by Robert Moog to be capable of sounding like a model D and much more.
@fooloof: I own both of these synthesizers. I recently took my Model D to a very respected Moog tech and he demoed some other Model Ds he had laying around. They all sound just like mine.
I am not sure what you mean by "a/b", though. If you had a Voy and a Mini in person, the differences would be obvious to even a non-musician.
The intro sounds like a Moog'ed up Koto...... I would honestly rather have a later Mini from Moog's Norlin days. Better tuning, and a much more stable sound. Long live the Minimoog!!!!
@skyprop Okay, I am new to synthesizers, and don't know much about them lol, I was wanting to get one of these as a first synth... I do have a bunch of keyboards so I know how to play though... and thanks, you are the only one on all videos to tell me the model d is better
@Hixbrianrkule the reason the model D sounds so Phatt and loud, compared to the voyager that sounds like a virtual weenie,is because the model is ALL "Discrete" circuitry, discrete circuitry is the analog electronics version of "Tubes".
@skyprop That is if you can afford it. If not look to get a Moog Source. It''s the same thing but with a digital input interface with memory, arpeggiator, and sample and hold. I own a source and love it. I won't give her up for no mony in the world!!

Aaahhh, thank you! It is short, but very sweet! Very very nice sounding Minimoog.

@3:07, I think your Moog is approximately 1/2 step sharp.

@alanpitfall: that is simply NOT TRUE!!
the Voyager and Model D sound VERY different. Yes, you can tell that each is a Moog synthesizer, but the Voy doe NOT sound like a Model D.
Certainly, the differences are far greater than what one would hear between two Model Ds.
These synths were made 40 years apart!
different components.
also, keep in mind that Bob Moog wasn't even the biggest contributor to the original Mini; it was B. Hemsath and J. Scott.

But not as good as expected..
Sometimes you can hear a little distorsion on mid-high frequencies introduced by transcoding wmv into flash video (Youtube format). Sorry!
