He was diagnosed some time after the magic tour (spring of 87), and according to Brian May, he might have known about the possibility before the last shows of that tour as well (summer of 86). He looked pretty good during the miracle era, allthough his trademark mustache was gone after the release of "pretender". But by the release of "headlong", you could really tell that something was wrong.
@starionpatrol fred was fine during the time when the videos of breakthru, the miracle and the invisible man but in scandal and i want it all there was too many light and those light were used to hide fred's gaunt appearance and by i'm going slightly mad, he looked terrible if you watched the color footage and the reason why the shom ust go on , these are the days of our lives and im going slightly mad are in black and white is beacause of fred's condition

its hard to see him like that, all the pain he suffered and anyone who didnt no he died of Bronchiole Pneumonia (a form of A.I.D.S) which the pneumonia attacks the lungs which makes it hard to breath so that must have tortured him. Because if its hard to breath imagine how hard it would be to breath or sing. So this song is a goodbye and i love you sortof song. I find it VERY depressing.

He used Stewart Granger's Scaramouche to tell us all about it; then when he was dying he took off the mask and said forgivingly "I still love you" because he probably knew most of us still didnt get IT! Brilliant. Pure Genius!!
