@asorlonnn - he was a focal-point for aristocrats rebelling against the democracy. The charge of impiety was largely irrelevant; he was seen as a potential figure-head for revolution.
@ChromeFang If you search for 'Mark Steel lectures' on Youtube, you'll find a lot more like this. He brings it on a more humorous way, but still very interesting. I had a great time viewing it.
"at his trial, when Socrates was asked to propose his own punishment, he suggests a wage paid by the government and free dinners for the rest of his life instead, to finance the time he spends as Athens' benefactor."
This should be taught to all children in the world from their first day in school. Had the world followed Socrates' teachings then it would've been a much better place.
You are not kidding. I am almost through my undergrad degree and not once from kindergarten until being a senior in college having been through a critical thinking class and intro to philosophy have I ever gotten this. Our democracy relies on this and to not have this be a priority of our educational system is really sad. I really feel cheated that the most important things I should have been taught in school was never taught and here I am at 22 learning it on my own.
Socrates spent time in jail before his execution due to the crowning of the ship Delos. It was said to be a holy season, during witch the city was not allowed to be pouted by public executions.
These last conversations of Socrates with Phadeo are, by my opinion, the most poignant on the subject of honoring one's belief's even to the end of ultimate sacrifice.
To leave them aside in any conversation about Socrates regarding self sacrifice is travesty.
I respect your personal opinion, but, I'd say you're still a sheep if you're following or agreeing fully with Zeitgeist only. Keep in mind that it's a documentary and, like most, is made to be convincing. Even though you did external research, I'm sure you only looked up views that support the theory of Zeitgeist, not beliefs against the ideas of that documentary. However, I must say that since I keep an open mind, I enjoyed watching Zeitgeist as well, though I may not totally agree with it.
@Thuglife1000 yeah your right but then again why go through the trouble of doing extra research that are against things like zeitgeist when daily life is basically a threat to the ideas which ZG proposes. Essentially, we've been researching beliefs against this documentary all our lives.
what i meant by my 1st comment was that i finally woke up and realized that i wasn't alone when it comes to opposing the whole system we live under. and here i am, now at a video about socrates.
@grimslider75 I see what you mean. And it's good that you're not living an unexamined life. By the way, if you've had people disagree with you when you've tried to make a good point (Or maybe even a good point taken from Zeitgeist), look up Plato's Allegory of the Cave. Although I'm quite sure you already know of it. Good luck!
@grimslider75 I feel you on that. Zeitgeist has many inaccuracies but the premis of what they are promoting is correct. A group of rich aholes control things and the resource based economy is a great idea.
The illuminati & our corrupt gov. continue to test Americans, Your either with us or against us, George Bush, As far as I am concern we need to burn the gov. to the ground it's corrupt, a fraud run by the Devil, Vatican, pope is the devil, Rothschild, 13 Evil families, Collions, Disney, Duponts, illuminati, bushes, kennedy's, Todds, ect. God vs. he Devil, the people vs. the Global Elites, everyone will be test soon enough.
The trial is one of the most famous of all time. Whether Socrates was punished unjustly is a thought-provoking and contested issue, which to this day inspires discussions about the nature and meaning of justice.
"Determine never to be idle. No person will have occasion to complain of the want of time who never loses any. It is wonderful how much may be done if we are always doing."
If you say you are a slave and act as one then you are a slave. There are many people out there of all different communities who are starting to ask themselves questions about what they have been taught from a young age. We all need to question what is presented to us. I was once a sheep but I woke up one day because of one book. Love to all.
Thanks for the interest. I was working on board a cruise ship with many people who had run away from life for an adventure at sea. We all seemed to be looking for something more. A friend gave me a book called 'The Celestine Prophecy' everyone seemed to be reading it. From this book I started to look at my life and what I really wanted. 15 years later and I'm a much better person and I have a better understanding of people and myself.
nice video but the vast majority do not have time and permission to think effectively due to lack of money, whereby a person has to spend his/her almost an entire time doing robotics things and lack of people who think the same as this person.Maybe a teeny weeny group may perform this apart from upper-class.
this is true the masses are the slaves and the upper class still use the masses for their fullfillments....A slave today could be driving a BMW and live in a big house but they are still slaves, they get up at dawn to go to work and come home in the evenings....
I love the scenery. I was just there, in Athens, last month and walked exactly where you did, the Agora, the Parthenon. I like your, and Socrates', philosophy about 'what is truth?' I had gone through that dialog numerous times when I was in politics. What I found was sad. Society hasn't changed much in 2,300 years.
I think Philosophy should be teached to all people no matter what level of education cus you can't put a label on good education everyone should have this education

@sub89 i think philosophy, art, and gym should be the only subjects taught in schools, and all othe subjects should be the responsibility of the parents to raise theyre kids with the skills they want based on what the parents do
He's referring to compulsory schooling, State schooling.
I disagree with him because it is the opposite of voluntary schooling, funded directly by fees paid by the parents and/or philanthropists and/or donations.
Voluntary schooling is more in tune with individuals and not with the mob, the majority, the State.
If you tell lies all of the time, then your very statement is a lie. So, then you're really not happy while telling lies. You must be unhappy most of the time then. I would say that you really need to reflect on 'what is truth?' if you can stop telling lies for a moment.
He did not belive in democracy because could not accept that everyone was capable of making rational/logical choice. He did not scape detah because he felt death was not end of living, as a philosopher he was curious about after life.

@Jayhawkblue My ideas go as follows: Nothing exists except for an overweight serbian named Steve, contained within any given washing machine is a black hole, nothing is false except for the proposition "nothing is false."
