This bloke sacrificed his arm just to please the management.

Management don't give a shit about him now, he was easily and quickly replaced by another dumb sucker.

There is 1 thing i dont understand,

to turn the machine on, you have to stand on the opposite of where the worker was standing.

and those machines shouldnt turn on by itself.

I had a similar job.There is a sequence to start the lathe. You start the main drive motor via a push button and then engage the clutch via a lever to make the chuck spin. If you get into the bad habit of leaving the motor on and the clutch disengaged then it is very easy to accidently knock the clutch engage lever.
