  • this song is so great, that tom petty covered it!

  • Tom Petty did a very good band version of this song.

  • I do need a saxophoe player, a bassist, and a piano player..maybe even'..a trumpetist..peace....held out mi ands

  • Tom Dichristina, Georgia Tech professor, is an Asshole, this song could be for him...

  • One of the 10 greatest songs of the past 20 years...and it can;t even be sung on American TV..which means it iS great.

  • Beck is Ludwig van Beethoven with a guitar and sunglasses

  • ok. omg. this song is awesome

  • asshole. ;)

  • HAHA, I love beck's Lyrics!

  • I bought this album on vinyl just for this song. Seriously.

  • @MrGoldSoundz

    this is my favorite song

  • Haunting

  • i used to love singing harmony to this amazing song with jen starr. i remember one night being in the dark singing this with her...something about a flashlight being the only light in the room. it was so incredibly eerie. wow, nearly 20 years ago...

  • genius...

  • The birds did fly, when the heavens all went dry, and the cigarettes were smokin by themselves... GOD SAVE BECK HANSEN

  • favorite song off this album, and one of my favorites of all time.

  • FFVII + asshole = elegant

  • fair enough

  • BECK = GOD

  • 99% correct

  • quiet misogyny

  • I actually own this album, it's really crazy almost Sonic Youthish, They have pictures of the equipment, it a reel to reel recorder and a kids radio shaped like a trumpet,Quality isn't great but Beck is still awesome.

  • The album sounds like it was recorded in his mothers kitchen. i still love it.

  • It's cool how the hook of this song manages to sound funny on one hand, and then on the other end of it it's simultaneously somber and hopeless. The line repeated three times, She'll do anything.. The third time with the harmony added in, almost making it seem happy the third time. Like you can count on her, everytime, as if by magic.. Ya know? And then just that emphasis.. like it's amusing and depressing at once.

"to Make you FEEL Like an asshole..."

  • aces

  • hah thanks buddy, i forgot about this comment. But yeah this song is god damn Great

  • This is like, my favorite song of all time.

  • me too :)

  • This is an album for chilling and reflecting.

The songs are very metaphoric and inquisitive, moreso than on his other albums like Odelay (and I love Odelay).

  • you should listen to sea change. that album got me through many a'times.

  • One of my favs.

  • This album followed by Mellow Gold are songs that I like to call Beckwoods albums. All the songs seem like they were written for a backwoods summer camp and I love it.

  • Jeff BEck forever but i like it

  • This is my favorite song off One Foot In The Grave. It's so good! And I used to not even care about Beck's old stuff, but lately I've gotten into it more. His old stuff is so genuine and more emotional I think. Beck is the coolest guy to walk the earth.

  • My goodness how i love Beck. Every album every song. He is such a wonderful musician. I love how he changes his style every album. He totally influences my music.

  • Such a good album.

  • just discovered this song, and i cant stop listening to it <3

  • cool cd

  • there's a good cover by petty..indeed

  • THE LYRIC- the cigarettes were smoking by themselves. amazing

  • awesome album

  • gave it another listen..bloody 17 year old genius

  • to make me feel like an arsehole

not my favorite beck album, had it a decade or so ago.

but things change, so maybe I should give it another listen

  • this one goes out to my ex-wife

we're still great mates, and i swear, she'll still do anything for me

  • thanks for posting this..I really love it!

  • Does anyone know what type of guitar Beck used for the 'One Foot In The Grave' album. I love the sound of it.

  • It sounds like nylon strings on acoustic to me at least.

  • A lot of the tunnings are C# and D on this album. I think this song is C#, the strings are so loose they just rattle off the neck. Being a guy with no high end it's easy to sing drunken blues in that key also.

  • knowledgable guy.. picked up on lotsa c# key as well

  • can you put up 14 floods song?? i think thats what its called please!

  • every time you burn one and she yells, and everytime you crack a cold one after work on friday to put the weeks past you and she moans ....thats what this song is about.

  • or she is just insecure, and wants to cover..

maybe maybe I do so too,

    its easier that way...

  • who is the other guy? ive always wondered..

  • anyone whos ever gone out with a girl from southbury ct, this song is about u!

  • Goddammit. I can't get this song out of my head. It's always there. At least for the last 6 days. My girlfriend is getting quiet worried, because she's unsure if I might really mean her when I sing it along.

  • lol..i'm always singing this song (and other' of beck) and everyone thinks i've lost it...but it's all bliss to me

  • awesome song. wish i couldn't relate to the words so much though. one foot in the grave is one of his best.

  • that and Sea Change.

  • forget about sea change

  • Why? it had some good stuff on it.

  • fucking agree.

  • great tune. I love this version.

  • ..."and the cigarettes were smoking by themselves" I love this man. Everything he touches is magic. There's no stylistic curve that he can't master,he can weave multiple genres and eras into his own original sonic groove, and his lyrics are always surreal, a brilliant song-writing machine par excellence. He also has one of the better musician websites out there. Did I say I loved him?

  • wonderful!

    underestimated song..

  • tom petty covered this song

  • Best shit ever man. Did you know that Johnny cash covered a song off this album? Check it out, just goes to show 66 views, seems like no one knows what the fuck is going on anymore.

  • Are you kidding me dude, this is a friggin' MASTERPIECE. Understated, stark and moody GENIUS. I want this release so badly, I guess it was put out by Calvin(Beat Happening)on K Records, at the same time he recorded Mellow Gold. I have to special order it. Thanks for uploading this, the Beck fans will love it dearly.
