Rather than reiterate the 100 year old views of Dewey, as you have done here, I advocate a more balanced approach.
Strengthen memorization and innovation. Reward hard work and creativity as well as high test scores. Reward successful teachers. Let learners reap the benefits of both passive learning and active learning--both necessary for the future skilled workers of tomorrow.
Gut feelings and cutesy videos shouldn't force our education system to abandon research tested methodology. Problem solving is definitely a goal, but students need to learn how to learn, not learn how to solve problems.
We teach spelling through memorization of 10 spelling words every single week, which prepares them to confront larger tasks of learning in later life; for example, medical students must learn a large number of facts about the anatomy before they can practice internal medicine.
Beautiful words, thanks for inspire us, there is always hope.
