This ad is dispicable. Whether or not second hand smoke it good for you or not its absolutely discusting to compare real abuse to a few puffs of smoke. This add is a vicious insult against millions of good parents in America
uncle is dying from copd because he was a long-term smoker & he's not even 50. my aunt died from lung cancer before she was 35 due to being a smoker. 1 of my childhood friends went into an asthma attack and died due to chainsmoking parents. as a kid i developed asthma & severe allergies solely due to a parent that smoked in the house. nearly died from it several times. many more examples. smoking IS A FORM OF ABUSE if it harms someone. why not smoke outside / away from kids and pets?
parents that smoke aren't child abusers. but parents that smoke AROUND children are indeed inflicting abuse on kids. there's more than one kind of abuse. secondhand smoke around kids is a physical form of abuse. if someone gets hit by a belt, their bruises heal. but secondhand smoke damage can last a lifetime. it causes asthma, allergies, and even death with some children. it's extremely selfish and damaging to smoke around kids, pets, and anyone else that is a non-smoker.
I grew up watching my folks smoking cigarettes and if I was exposed to "secondhand smoke" then I must be immune because I got the lungs of a fucking track-star. I honestly don't see how smoking in front of kids is compared to child abuse. Beating your kid with a belt buckle is child abuse, smoking in front of your kid is nothing similar in any way... besides it's not like they won't end up smoking when they become teenagers anyway. If you ask me I think this video is bullshit.
Smoking in front of kids CAN be comparable to abuse because it can cause long-term physical health problems, whereas abuse causes psychological problems.
Even as a teenager who's mother smokes, the comparison of child abuse to smoking around children is horrific and just not right. This video makes me sick.
Angering people is no way to influence them. If the producer of this commercial can't think of a constructive way to help reduce smoking around kids without dredging up her past, perhaps she should let others do the job.
Speaking for my boyfriend I would like to say "F*CK YOU!" to the people who made this video. He got mad at this video because he went through severe abuse as a little kid and to compare smoking to it pissed him off. His parents severely abused him (it's a miracle he's still alive) and his grandparents saved him from it when he was 5. His grandfather smoked but he was a wonderful parent to him, to compare his monstrous parents to his rescuers just down right made him sick.
Both my parents smoked heavily when I was a child.
I still remember the blue haze in the lounge as we were all watching TV. I particularly recall the choking confinement of long car journeys, although I can't say it particularly troubled me at the time, I took it for granted that that was simply the way things were. My mother has since died from a stroke aged 56. (Nicotine hardens the arteries) My father has COPD (Lung Disease) and cannot walk 25 yards without getting out of breath...
...and as for me well I'm now 43, I have gradually developed a persistent chest cough over the last 20 years or so, persistent enough to be considered detrimental by partners in two failed long term relationships. I have never smoked. The damage caused by smoking is insidious and it's consequences still reverberate for me decades on.
there not saying ur physically abusing ur child their saying that its another form of abuse... which it is .. no1s saying that ur mom, dad, grandma are not loving or good ppl but i see it all the time even my friends who have children will sit there with a smoke in one hand and pushing the stroller back and fourth with the other.. its just not right .. thats my opinion...we kno whats in cigarettes..hmm wouldnt want a baby breathing that in...
To me, this is like when people say that alcoholism is a disease. Tell that to someone with leukemia. If they can muster up the strength, they'll raise up out of that hospital bed and smack you in the head and maybe knock some sense into you. Or like when PETA compares KFC to the Holocaust. It is not comparable. Tell someone who actually suffered from child abuse that you think you know what they're going through because your mom smoked around you. I fucking dare you.
Comparing second hand smoke to child abuse is retarded. I agree you shouldn't smoke around kids, but that's hardly the same as beating them. I was beat pretty regularly as a child by a drunk dad, and my mom smoked around me. Care to guess which one sucked worse?
don't understand why this is getting bad press. It pretty much hits the topic right at the head (no pun intended) and it's merely showing that smoking is just as harmful as child abuse. Why parents expose their kids to these toxins is beyond me, quite frankly parents are supposed to protect the young ones not expose them to the dangers of it.
And to ALL parents who smoke around their children, young or old, think did you EVER ASK THEM if they wanted to be smoked around, did you EVER ASK THEM if they wanted to be subjected to early death, and cancer, and disease! and shame shame shame on you if you never did!! and even more shame on you, if you KNEW they did not like it, and lets put MORE SHAME on you if you knew they had apirations to be a RUNNING TRACK STAR!! and you kept on smoking around them.
People who smoke alone it's one thing, but when you take the lives of another person in your own hands it's a whole other planet! you need to know that smoking around any other person affects them. Smoking is rude.
this is exactly how I feel around my dad, when he smokes around me, second hand smoke kills just as child abuse does, maybe it is not as "visible" but it hurts just as much in the long run.
wow! that totally gets its point across!!! I have always thought of smoking as a murder-suicide. now its also abuse! That is so true! :-p cigarettes are GROSS! QUIT WHILE YOUR STILL ALIVE!
I don't understand. You must be 17 or older to view a R-rated movie. You must be 18 or older to buy cigarettes. Or is this not the case outside of the US? I quite honestly don't know.
PRESENTING!! Yes, from the same people who brought you "Jews are greedy", "Blacks are violent", "Women are stupid", and "Mexicans are lazy"... American Mass Media now brings you... "SMOKERS ARE CHILD ABUSERS!!" Vilify your neighbors! Demonize your friends! Dehumanize millions around the world, all from the comfort of your living room!
Smoking around a child is just as harmful as punching it in the mouth. This ad is equating it to abuse because of the damage caused. Nowhere during the ad did it say that "smokers are child abusers". The screaming is simply showing that it is a silent and hidden abuse as opposed to brutal physical abuse. So your sarcastic liberal comment does not apply here.
Well, look, honestly, I absolutley hate the idea on smoking being legal, and I honestly hate the fact that smokers ignorantly expose others to second hand smoke, but I really don't think that smoking around kids can really be compared to child abuse. It may be hazardous to the kids, but there is a huge difference between beating kids and smoking near them.
You sound like a Nazi and of course you are...How do you account for all the intelligent and creative people who smoke??? I think your genetics might be a little flawed, dingus.
i used to smoke, until i realized that chemical-laden commercial-brand cigarettes are for children. now the only cigarettes i smoke contain grass: taste tested, mind-and-body-approved, cannabis
not a nazi, though i do drive a bimmer. but, hey, thanks for the generic, baseless and uneducated accusation...NEXT!
Sorry, but if you believe some groups of people have "flawed genetics", you're a Nazi, no matter what kind of car you drive or how much weed you smoke.
Cannabis smokers, of all people, should recognize the same tactics used against them now being used against tobacco smokers: fake science and a government propaganda war to demonize them. There's no ratioanl reason marijuana should be a Schedule I drug and no reason people can't smoke in public places with some reasonable restrictions.
i smoked cigarettes too, for a long time. most people who smoke say they want to quit, but most of them 'haven't been able to'. I don't know anyone who wanted to quit smoking weed and 'couldn't'... The availability and dependency-causing nature of nicotene seem to trump the willpower of smokers who wish to give up smoking. addiction is a destructive force in the lives of those afflicted, and to be enslaved by one's physical dependency in spite of one's better judgment is very bad for self image
I assume "most" smokers say they want to quit because that's the "right" answer to give. If you say "I like smoking and have no intention of quitting", people might think you're one of those horrible people who actually have minds of their own. It's like those "adults' who claim they only "experimented" with drugs in college and would be apoplectice if their kids ever did so. In reality, they partied their butts off and maybe still do, but ya know ya can' go around saying that.
I remember when weed was very mainstream and people smoked it openly in movie theaters, on street corners, etc. Then the Forces of Evil got busy and waged their propaganda war. Today weed is no less popular, but it's underground and they seem to think that's the best way. Do check out the Partnership for a Drug-Free America and they'll tell you all about how dangerous pot is.
As far as how "addictive"s smoking is, if it were, you'd see smokers going into severe withdrawal on long flights.
I don't side with anti or pro smokers-- it's your body, dudes-- but I think the effort put into this ad could have gone to fighting a much more impacting cause, with a lot more tact than this. Considering our current air pollutant levels and environmental factors are probably contributing enough gunk to lungs, disputable SHS problems are the least of the newer generations' worries. If the world keeps rolling this way we're all gonna have lung diseases sooner or later anyway.
i would disagree. how damaging is it REALLY? i mean get real! how many kids did you grow up with who's parents smoke, and how many of those kids were seiously damaged from growing up around smokers. the true damage that it can do from you in reality is that those kids will grow up more likely become hooked on them. just because of the fact that their body is already getting fixes of the addictive chemicals. a lot of people i knew growing up fell into this cycle.
People don't like this commercial because of the guy's voice at the end: "It is, in fact, abuse" he sounds like a total asshole both in the way he says it and the tone.
It does not engage the target audience, who I presume are smokers. Instead of making smokers think about second hand smoke and how it harms their children, this commercial makes them pissed off and feel alienated from the message.
The message is "flamebait" and it's no wonder it started a flamewar.
I think this might desensitize people to physical child abuse(as in beatings). You shouldn't compare a smoker to a violent person. It would be like comparing PMS to George Bush. You could have shown a few pictures of kids with asthma choking, that's more realistic and doesn't insult the audience.
"No daddy I don't want lung cancer in 20 years!" "You'll get lung cancer in twenty years and like it! Don't make me throw in some heart disease, boy!"
A bit of an exaggeration. But as a safety precaution, wouldn't it be best to smoke outside?
No, because people have a right to enjoy risky things without having to step on eggshells all the time because something "might" be harmful. That way of thinking has brough us this dreary, namby-pamby excuse for a society.
"Might"? "Might" implies doubt. I didn't know there was still debate over whether smoking actually causes cancer. Maybe you think not breathing "might" cause you to suffocate, or that 2 + 2 "might" be equal to 4.
There are many smokers who never get lung cancer and many lung cancer patients who don't smoke. Japan has one of the world's highest smoking rates--an they smoke everywhere, even around kids--yet they have the world's longest life expectancy. Go figure that.
You're absolutely right. Tobacco must be completely harmless, because everyone knows life expectancy is based on only one factor.
If cigarettes are so great, why does it tell you on the package that they're hazardous to your health? Why did Phillip Morris make commercials basically saying "don't buy our products?" If you want to gamble with your own health, fine. Why should the rest of us take the risk with you? Take your disgusting toxic fumes outside and stop whining about it.
"The child abuse theme is both inappropriate and extremely offensive. The spot is disgraceful and it is something that would have never been condoned if my office had been aware of it. We have taken immediate action to remove it from You Tube and to halt any further distribution. We extend our profound apologies to everyone for this grievous error.
are you for real? it's free speech! just because you "disagree" with it doesn't mean you're allowed to get it taken off. i disagree with a lot of things, but what i do is "not listen to it" or "not watch it". for being a part of the ALA, you sure do send a mix message. I, for 1, do think it's a lot more like child abuse than one would think
Who else but a kid believes in totally demonizing entire segments of society. Can't wait for the day when we go after parents who let their kids eat candy or junk food. Or who drink in front of them.
That is sick, the antis have a serious problem, they need treatment. Why have we got the oldest ever living generation? Lived through the biggest passive smoking eras. Strange.
Sick like the hook adverts, just shows what twisted mind the antis have.
Now put a plug in air freshener and do the same video.
There is no perpective at all, in your idea of child abuse. Stop using the children for your lying agenda.
largest study carried out on Environmental Tobacco Smoke was done by Enstrom and Kabat. Carried out over 38 years on 118,094 people with the result that no relationship between ETS and tobacco related mortalities was found. Because this study did not fit ideological and political agendas James Enstrom has been continuously subjected to unethical and erroneous attacks by individuals in an attempt to discredit his work which was passed by the BMJ
There have been thousands of studies over the last fifty years but they all came from the 76 studies I have on my hard drive. Of the studies in my possession, over 80% of them were paid for by the "good guys" i.e. your team:
28 studies say there is a protective effect from SHS.
24 studies say that there is a slightly elevated statistical risk.
24 say nothing much either way.
It has to be said that all of these studies are flawed for a variety of reasons.
Who cares where you sit Allenbaba43 but I have a pretty good idea? Equally, life is not a simple as you would like it to be although it's certainly getting as twisted as your posts.
From where I sit, the research points to second hand smoke clearly being harmful. Therefore knowingly exposing kids to that is abuse. It's really that simple. And yes, there are lots of things parents do that can be labled abuse, but that's moot. This commercial holds water. The fact that you all call the director of this comercial names on Dr Siegel's website, and judge her character based on thirty seconds of work is the smoking gun for how ignorant and irrational extremists can be.
Nobody has called her names on Dr. Seigel's website--and I am sure that he would delete any such attempt to do so. Her character is evident in this ad and in her "defense" of it. In this case, opinionated attributions from you or the EPA only illustrate hateful bias in the face of evidence to the contrary. You need to adjust your seat. freedom2choose . co . uk
As for your comments tennisIsFun99, if that codswallop were true how come that up to the 1980s when people smoked very heavily in large numbers that children weren't keeling over all over the place? They weren't and many of them were a darn sight more healthy than they are today. No, children in those days did not perpetually complain about respiratory problems either. They were too busy running around and climbing trees unlike the little couch potatoes that are being nurtured today.
Ah the EPA! Wasn't this the same organisation that in 1998 was forced in a federal court to remove 2 key statements from its major report due to the fact it had fiddled its research? Those clauses being:
1. that ETS presents a serious and substantial health impact, and
2. that ETS is responsible for the lung cancer deaths of 3,000 Americans annually.
From a World Health Organization study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, "ETS exposure during childhood was not associated with an increased risk of lung cancer (odds ratio [OR] for ever exposure = 0.78; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.64--0.96)." Also see Wu-Williams (1990). Negative correlations suggest a *protective* effect. Health scare sensationalism disregards science and decency. The ALA and the director should have known better than to trivialize child abuse.
From the EPA: Children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of secondhand smoke because they are still developing physically, have higher breathing rates than adults, and have little control over their indoor environments. Exposure to secondhand smoke can cause asthma, lower respiratory track infections, such as pneumonia and bronchitis, middle ear infections. Exposure to secondhand smoke can cause heart disease, leukemia and lung cancer.
Smoking around children creates more illnesses including asthma, ear infections and cancer. This is an excellent attempt to equate physical beating with second smoke exposure. Think about it.
what's funny is, when the subject came up, I would tell people 'I can quit anytime I want, I just don't want to yet'
It's not a matter of 'quitting'. Actually, that is a bit of a misnomer, 'quit' makes it sound like a bad thing.
It's more about 'not putting cigarette in mouth and lighting it'
How come Partnership for a Drug Free America is silent with regard to alcohol and tobacco? Check out a list of their sponsors, you may be surprised. Philip Morris, Busch, etc...
I see this video as an attempt to shock sense into smoking parents who may not realize their second hand smoke is damaging their children. I believe this as a serious, public health problem and that this video as a responsible production. If it was widely seen, it could help, well-meaning, but unthinking, smoking parents stop smoking, that would benefit society. I don't appreciate being called names by people who, evidently, want to claim a right to harm their children.
A totally twisted and misconceived concept, this video is designed to promote hated against people who smoke. It does no service to children either for if the anti-tobacco lobby gets its way, then children will be removed from loving homes because the parents smoke. That, of course will not provide any benefit but serious emotional and psychological damage. Equally, why do people think that those who make this kind of rubbish should be trusted?
American Lung Association should be ashamed of themselves. This is absolutely appalling. Is there no lie anti-smokers are not willing to tell to achieve prohibition?
Obscene and unfounded promotion of hate crimes against a minority by attempting to create a crime where none existing, except in the minds of tobacco control crusaders. Totally unconstitutional. Shame on you! This video was supposed to have been pulled hours ago.
Unconstitutional? Having the spot pulled because of a website of 18 misguided losers is unconstitutional. You smokers on that pathetic site are no different than the anti-smokers who made it so you can only smoke in a cave. Seriously. No different. Radicals. The fact that you all dispute the harm is EXACTLY why we need commercials like this. Apparently this wasn't harsh enough. Kirkwood should lose his job. Shame on the American Lung Association for not doing their job.
There is no more harm than sitting in front of a fire or a BBQ. Or living in the USA. Look at the life expectany in other coutries ... By moving to another country you could easily prolong the life expectany of your children by some 5 or 6 years. Get real!
You need to give yourself another dose of that morphine drip p0ps.
Equating smoking a cigarette in the same room as your child with a parent berating their child while the child screams in horror is just wrong. Not to mention pathetic.
Even John L. Kirkwood,President & CEO of the American Lung Association has said this ad was "both inappropriate and extremely offensive."

My grandma smoked around me from the time I was a baby, and she was the most loving, caring woman I've ever met in my life.
To be perfectly honest, this offends me.
Lots of perfectly loving parents/grandparents smoke around their children; they don't need to be accused of child abuse, they need education.
For what it's worth, i smoke. But, if I ever have kids, I wouldn't smoke around them.

Comparing second hand smoke to child abuse is retarded. I agree you shouldn't smoke around kids, but that's hardly the same as beating them. I was beat pretty regularly as a child by a drunk dad, and my mom smoked around me. Care to guess which one sucked worse?
jasonk1987bunny 2 years ago
don't understand why this is getting bad press. It pretty much hits the topic right at the head (no pun intended) and it's merely showing that smoking is just as harmful as child abuse. Why parents expose their kids to these toxins is beyond me, quite frankly parents are supposed to protect the young ones not expose them to the dangers of it.

Child Abuse : Bruises, Broken bones, emotional issues... ect.
2nd hand smoke : Lung Cancer, Heart Disease, asma.

MAttOE88 2 years ago
Well, look, honestly, I absolutley hate the idea on smoking being legal, and I honestly hate the fact that smokers ignorantly expose others to second hand smoke, but I really don't think that smoking around kids can really be compared to child abuse. It may be hazardous to the kids, but there is a huge difference between beating kids and smoking near them.

zerogravitybong 3 years ago
Sorry, but if you believe some groups of people have "flawed genetics", you're a Nazi, no matter what kind of car you drive or how much weed you smoke.
Cannabis smokers, of all people, should recognize the same tactics used against them now being used against tobacco smokers: fake science and a government propaganda war to demonize them. There's no ratioanl reason marijuana should be a Schedule I drug and no reason people can't smoke in public places with some reasonable restrictions.
upperkkut 3 years ago
i smoked cigarettes too, for a long time. most people who smoke say they want to quit, but most of them 'haven't been able to'. I don't know anyone who wanted to quit smoking weed and 'couldn't'... The availability and dependency-causing nature of nicotene seem to trump the willpower of smokers who wish to give up smoking. addiction is a destructive force in the lives of those afflicted, and to be enslaved by one's physical dependency in spite of one's better judgment is very bad for self image
zerogravitybong 3 years ago
I assume "most" smokers say they want to quit because that's the "right" answer to give. If you say "I like smoking and have no intention of quitting", people might think you're one of those horrible people who actually have minds of their own. It's like those "adults' who claim they only "experimented" with drugs in college and would be apoplectice if their kids ever did so. In reality, they partied their butts off and maybe still do, but ya know ya can' go around saying that.
upperkkut 3 years ago
I remember when weed was very mainstream and people smoked it openly in movie theaters, on street corners, etc. Then the Forces of Evil got busy and waged their propaganda war. Today weed is no less popular, but it's underground and they seem to think that's the best way. Do check out the Partnership for a Drug-Free America and they'll tell you all about how dangerous pot is.
As far as how "addictive"s smoking is, if it were, you'd see smokers going into severe withdrawal on long flights.

XxEnglishlassxX 3 years ago
I don't side with anti or pro smokers-- it's your body, dudes-- but I think the effort put into this ad could have gone to fighting a much more impacting cause, with a lot more tact than this. Considering our current air pollutant levels and environmental factors are probably contributing enough gunk to lungs, disputable SHS problems are the least of the newer generations' worries. If the world keeps rolling this way we're all gonna have lung diseases sooner or later anyway.
Pointless ad.

i would disagree. how damaging is it REALLY? i mean get real! how many kids did you grow up with who's parents smoke, and how many of those kids were seiously damaged from growing up around smokers. the true damage that it can do from you in reality is that those kids will grow up more likely become hooked on them. just because of the fact that their body is already getting fixes of the addictive chemicals. a lot of people i knew growing up fell into this cycle.

You could have shown a few pictures of kids with asthma choking, that's more realistic and doesn't insult the audience.

mordredt02 4 years ago
No, because people have a right to enjoy risky things without having to step on eggshells all the time because something "might" be harmful. That way of thinking has brough us this dreary, namby-pamby excuse for a society.
upperkkut 4 years ago
"Might"? "Might" implies doubt. I didn't know there was still debate over whether smoking actually causes cancer. Maybe you think not breathing "might" cause you to suffocate, or that 2 + 2 "might" be equal to 4.
mordredt02 4 years ago
There are many smokers who never get lung cancer and many lung cancer patients who don't smoke. Japan has one of the world's highest smoking rates--an they smoke everywhere, even around kids--yet they have the world's longest life expectancy. Go figure that.
upperkkut 4 years ago
You're absolutely right. Tobacco must be completely harmless, because everyone knows life expectancy is based on only one factor.
If cigarettes are so great, why does it tell you on the package that they're hazardous to your health? Why did Phillip Morris make commercials basically saying "don't buy our products?" If you want to gamble with your own health, fine. Why should the rest of us take the risk with you? Take your disgusting toxic fumes outside and stop whining about it.

largest study carried out on Environmental Tobacco Smoke was done by Enstrom and Kabat.

Equally, life is not a simple as you would like it to be although it's certainly getting as twisted as your posts.
rintintin1000 4 years ago
From where I sit, the research points to second hand smoke clearly being harmful. Therefore knowingly exposing kids to that is abuse. It's really that simple. And yes, there are lots of things parents do that can be labled abuse, but that's moot. This commercial holds water. The fact that you all call the director of this comercial names on Dr Siegel's website, and judge her character based on thirty seconds of work is the smoking gun for how ignorant and irrational extremists can be.
Allenbaba43 4 years ago

They were too busy running around and climbing trees unlike the little couch potatoes that are being nurtured today.
rintintin1000 4 years ago
Ah yes, indeed it was the EPA.
rintintin1000 4 years ago
From a World Health Organization study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, "ETS exposure during childhood was not associated with an increased risk of lung cancer (odds ratio [OR] for ever exposure = 0.78; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.64--0.96)." Also see Wu-Williams (1990). Negative correlations suggest a *protective* effect. Health scare sensationalism disregards science and decency. The ALA and the director should have known better than to trivialize child abuse.
DancingTigerBait 4 years ago
From the EPA: Children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of secondhand smoke because they are still developing physically, have higher breathing rates than adults, and have little control over their indoor environments. Exposure to secondhand smoke can cause asthma, lower respiratory track infections, such as pneumonia and bronchitis, middle ear infections. Exposure to secondhand smoke can cause heart disease, leukemia and lung cancer.
tennisIsFun99 4 years ago
Smoking around children creates more illnesses including asthma, ear infections and cancer. This is an excellent attempt to equate physical beating with second smoke exposure. Think about it.

I don't appreciate being called names by people who, evidently, want to claim a right to harm their children.
p0ps 4 years ago
A totally twisted and misconceived concept, this video is designed to promote hated against people who smoke. It does no service to children either for if the anti-tobacco lobby gets its way, then children will be removed from loving homes because the parents smoke. That, of course will not provide any benefit but serious emotional and psychological damage. Equally, why do people think that those who make this kind of rubbish should be trusted?
