Ok, nothing against Carolina Crown or anyone else, they do what's asked of them. But 2 secs into thier clip I had to stop. I work in tv news in ATL and covered high school band comps, while the guy on the pa yelled, "oh yeah, best band in the land" "often imitated never duplicated" and other crap during the performance. As a former member of the DCI family,I find that obnoxious and distracting. Let the kids play for Christ's sake. Don't conform. Stay elite. Stay about the MUSIC,and entertainment
The '88 Maleguena ending is the greatest of all time. It is simply electrifying, and will always have its place in DCI history. But on the other hand, I do have to give the Cavaliers some credit. Frameworks was an amazing show as well, But personally, I don't think anyone can ever match the Madison Scouts in their performance. It was absolute perfection, and is number one on my list of favorite endings. Well done Madison Scouts.
20 minutes in to the best endings and Cav's Spin Cycle has not made the cut? One of the most if not most orginals DCI show ever. This is not take away from BD, they were on fire that night. Really as you open with them.
Personal favorites are SOA'79s Let it be Me and Phantom 78's Elsa's Processional.. Although the Phantom's near oral sex during the Bacchanalia was pretty memorable too.
I wonder if the sheer volume, audience entertainment value, and squeal trumpeters (not 'sort of,' but the real deal by the dozens) of that 1988 Malaguena ending will ever be approached, or if it was just an absolute freak of nature that brought that many players & a music arranger together at their prime? It is such a shame recording hadn't advanced at that time to where it is today. As an uninvolved, but decades-long DCI fan, I guess it was just a perfect storm of talent.
@atrain3521 Don't know if I completely agree with you on that (this Malaguena finale is unmatcheable), but I do consider the Frameworks show (and its ending) one of DCI's best, and it is my favorite...
We did Birdland my senior year in high school and my band director found some way to add in the fight club visual from frameworks and it fit. it was awesome.
Nothing feels quite the same as the chills experienced following music played on a skill level far and above anything you've ever experienced... Damn.
Really great to see old Madison Scouts footage. 93 Star of Indiana, though it's great you included it, is way beyond best ending. That show redefined everything about drum corps. I hear they are doing a reunion show at the close of the DCI's this year too. You have so much great stuff here!
Most of the time, I dislike vocals in shows, but there are exceptions. Cadets 05 and Crown 04 and 07 are it. Also, what the announcer in Crown 07 is saying is absolutely hilarious if you ask me :)
Madison 88 may be the best ending of all time. I'm not a percussionist but those symbol players look insane at 8:31. Oh how I miss these older shows. It was about the music and drill being pushed to the limits without amped crap or theater.

@MY5579 I marched in Star in '90, and I have to agree that '88 Madison is one of my favorite "older school" endings of all time. The build is fan-f*&^ing-tastic and the payoff just brings you to your feet. '93 Star was in my opinion the greatest show of all time, and honestly most shows even today pale in comparison. I would have loved to see "my" ending here - our closer in '90 with all the stars, the cross, and the sudden company front is one of the best in my opinion.
@MY5579 i agree i freaking hate props, vocals(poems throughout the show or something like that) they just get in the way of having an amazing performance
@MY5579 You are absolutely right! The synthesizers are killing DCI. It is now more about being theater on the field than drum corps. Corps seem to think a show is not complete until they have played some piano music or rock guitar or some other sampled non-brass or percussion instrument. Also, they seem to think they have to roll around on the field before the show can be considered complete.
@MY5579 Having marched in the Cymbal Line with Madison in 87 (following in the shadow prior legendary Madison Cymbal lines) and then having to leave early in 88. I can tell you they were insane, in the very best way. One of the best times of my life. I have to agree 88 is one of the best ending ever but Garfield 87 is right next to it. Screw amps! MADISON SCOUTS! BYBO!!

On Spirits ending:This video does not contain the complete sound bits of the crowd after that amazing performance...The crowds went crazy... Please redo this video please with the complete crowd reaction...contact me if you want the unedited uncut version..
Incorrect. Star of Indiana left DCI in 1993 to form the brass theatre called Blast!. Many Star alumni currently work at top 12 corps, most significantly Carolina Crown. The 1993 drum major, Matt Harloff, is Crown's brass caption head; he's also the brass caption head at Avon High School.
Phantom Regiment has been around way longer than Star of Indiana.
They're not booing...they're Bloooooing. It started in 87 after they finished "Autumn Leaves" -- which has become their corps song. The crowd started cheering Blooooooooooooooooo, as in Blooooocoats....it stuck as a tradition ever since.
I don't think they're underrated @Moonmatt2, I just think people have forgotten about them. They got out of the game strong, as you can see with that ending. Switching over to Brass Theatre (which later became Blast!) was the best and noteworthy thing that they could have done. They brought drum corps to people who have never known what drum corps was!
Blue Devils '86, Santa Clara '85 and '86, Madison '85, Cadets 82,83,84, 85, 87, Sky '82, Star '90, Cadets 93, Phantom '89, Suncoast throughout the mid 80's.............
The Bluecoats that year HAD five basses. But when it came around to finals the kid that WAS playing, I wanna say 4th bass. Had a medical problem and couldn't march finals so that is why.
Whoever was the film director for the Scouts in 88 should have been shot....one of the greatest ever standing ovations and he catches the tom players.
BD had more volume than Madison could've ever hoped for in 88 (and better quality), what are you smokin? Personally I couldn't hear much at all from them, with the crowd going ape about 2 minutes before the show was over anyway.
Exciting? Sure. Loud? Not so much.
The award for "best volume" belongs either to 89 Phantom or else 96 BD anyway...nobody else comes close except for the old days (all bets are off on that stuff, besides Spirt and Madison the Muchachos were amazingly loud).
I have a hard time believing that the Cadets ending is really a "fan favorite", since the crowd reaction sounds like a courtesy clap at a golf tournament.
I was at that show, most people were just shaking their heads in disgust. Same goes for that Crown 07 ending, and anything else employing spoken word in a microphone. Amped vocals are an abomination upon the activity
true to that both shows wernt really all that great and exciting music wise but the 2005 cadets have the highest scored show of all time with a 99.15. but crown 07 did have a better reaction from the crowd than 05 cadets.
well then u should watch the 1988 madison scouts. theyve had the 2nd best show that ive seen. the 2008 phantom regiments had the best when they did sparticus
i honestly don't give a crap about narration as long as it's limited and it's used for effect (a la Crown 07 and somewhat Bluecoats 08, which had a bit too much).... if it adds that little bit of theatrical/thematic effect it's great.... just when you get cadets 06-08 it becomes painful (spirit this year also didn't work out very well with narration)
Yeah, to each his own. I just feel like, if you have to say what's going on into a microphone, you're doing it wrong. I don't want to be hit over the head with the theme of a show by way of having it spoken to me via a PA system. I want the artistry of the drums and bugles and visual elements to tell the story. It's like taking Van Gogh's Starry Night and printing in big bold letters on top of it "THIS IS A PAINTING OF A STARRY NIGHT"
@tdog889 I think you hit it on the head...It isn't that narration is bad it is what the Cadets did with it that was painful to watch. Especially in 08, that show made no sense at all and the crime was that the horn line and the drumline were solid they just got killed because the show was flat out lame
Well, most of the people sitting around me were, I can't speak for the entire stadium.
I don't really have a problem with experimentation to enhance GE. I was wary of the notion of amplification, but it has unlocked a lot of percussive sounds from the pit that used to be impossible to be audible. I didn't mind the switch to Bb, the addition of members, the inclusion of a frontline in general (I'm a pit guy myself). I just have a problem with miked voices, I think it sullies the activity
@noodles91380 I can only forgive Crown for using spoken words because there really is nothing you can do to describe a horse race other than having an announcer.
@reverberate10 That's true, but it doesn't stop it from being a terrible idea, plus all the "Green Machine" stuff is in seriously bad taste. Plus, why the hell would you want to cover up that horn sound? Use of vocals in drum corps sucks so much ass.
@tommytimp in my opinion it added so much to the general effect it didnt cover up the sound a whole lot because he would say something then they would play a chord and back and forth. the "Green Machine" thing was a JOKE they also joked around with the "Devil in Blue" im sure both corps had a good laugh about it.
@THEmelloMAN1229 There was Devil in Blue, Green Machine, Crown, and the Holy Garfield.
Also if you looked at the color's of the numbers the guard (the horses) were wearing, that are all colors of different corps. From Cavies and BD all the way down to the Mandarins.
Honestly, to those who are touting the Star '93 show, I marched in another corps that year and watched many of their shows. The crowd reaction to that avant guard music was never much more than a courtesy clap.
Wow, Madison Scouts - I have only ran into one person that had anything negative to say about that group. But there will always be that ONE!!! LOL. I don't know when this was posted but I would even add Phantom of 2008 up their with the greats.
I remember watching BD '04 live a world championships. During the performance where the corp hit the pedal tones... the whole stadium shook it was so powerful.
Needs star 91, and more phantom. wantz more epic 90s closers in general

The award for "best volume" belongs either to 89 Phantom or else 96 BD anyway...nobody else comes close except for the old days (all bets are off on that stuff, besides Spirt and Madison the Muchachos were amazingly loud).

03' Phantom? I thought it was pretty intense.

I have a hard time believing that the Cadets ending is really a "fan favorite", since the crowd reaction sounds like a courtesy clap at a golf tournament.
reefedflamdragsFTW 2 years ago 5
By fan favorites, I meant videos recommended to me in comments in the first video. Honestly, I don't like it that much either.

Word. Thanks for the vid, by the way.

theres a different video of them on youtube that shows the crowds real reaction. its kinda hard to hear on this video.

I was at that show, most people were just shaking their heads in disgust. Same goes for that Crown 07 ending, and anything else employing spoken word in a microphone. Amped vocals are an abomination upon the activity
noodles91380 2 years ago
true to that both shows wernt really all that great and exciting music wise but the 2005 cadets have the highest scored show of all time with a 99.15. but crown 07 did have a better reaction from the crowd than 05 cadets.
wslb2009 2 years ago 2
scores smores, it's all political anyway. You are right, Crown 07 got a better response, but again, that spoken word stuff makes me wanna vomit.
noodles91380 2 years ago
well then u should watch the 1988 madison scouts. theyve had the 2nd best show that ive seen. the 2008 phantom regiments had the best when they did sparticus
wslb2009 2 years ago
Oh yeah, I've watched 88 Scouts a few hundred times (former Scout myself). Awesome show. I enjoyed the ending of 95 Scouts a little better though.
noodles91380 2 years ago
what year did u march for the scouts? and and was 95's show called?
wslb2009 2 years ago
01-02 - and 95 was A Drum Corps Fan's Dream
noodles91380 2 years ago
i honestly don't give a crap about narration as long as it's limited and it's used for effect (a la Crown 07 and somewhat Bluecoats 08, which had a bit too much).... if it adds that little bit of theatrical/thematic effect it's great.... just when you get cadets 06-08 it becomes painful (spirit this year also didn't work out very well with narration)
tdog889 2 years ago
Yeah, to each his own. I just feel like, if you have to say what's going on into a microphone, you're doing it wrong. I don't want to be hit over the head with the theme of a show by way of having it spoken to me via a PA system. I want the artistry of the drums and bugles and visual elements to tell the story. It's like taking Van Gogh's Starry Night and printing in big bold letters on top of it "THIS IS A PAINTING OF A STARRY NIGHT"
noodles91380 2 years ago
@tdog889 I think you hit it on the head...It isn't that narration is bad it is what the Cadets did with it that was painful to watch. Especially in 08, that show made no sense at all and the crime was that the horn line and the drumline were solid they just got killed because the show was flat out lame

Why is it wrong to experiment with different concepts to enhance the overall general effect? I doubt most people were shaking their heads in disgust.
84857485 2 years ago
Well, most of the people sitting around me were, I can't speak for the entire stadium.
I don't really have a problem with experimentation to enhance GE. I was wary of the notion of amplification, but it has unlocked a lot of percussive sounds from the pit that used to be impossible to be audible. I didn't mind the switch to Bb, the addition of members, the inclusion of a frontline in general (I'm a pit guy myself). I just have a problem with miked voices, I think it sullies the activity
noodles91380 2 years ago
@noodles91380 I can only forgive Crown for using spoken words because there really is nothing you can do to describe a horse race other than having an announcer.
reverberate10 1 year ago 9
@reverberate10 if you can't portray something without speaking it directly into a microphone...perhaps its not good art.
noodles91380 1 year ago 3
@reverberate10 Agreed.

@reverberate10 well, there is always the old standby of not doing something just to do it.
sargepup 1 year ago
@reverberate10 That's true, but it doesn't stop it from being a terrible idea, plus all the "Green Machine" stuff is in seriously bad taste. Plus, why the hell would you want to cover up that horn sound? Use of vocals in drum corps sucks so much ass.
tommytimp 1 year ago
@tommytimp in my opinion it added so much to the general effect it didnt cover up the sound a whole lot because he would say something then they would play a chord and back and forth. the "Green Machine" thing was a JOKE they also joked around with the "Devil in Blue" im sure both corps had a good laugh about it.
THEmelloMAN1229 1 year ago
@THEmelloMAN1229 There was Devil in Blue, Green Machine, Crown, and the Holy Garfield.
Also if you looked at the color's of the numbers the guard (the horses) were wearing, that are all colors of different corps. From Cavies and BD all the way down to the Mandarins.
dllasfan87 1 year ago
@reverberate10 Not to mention I think most people were shaking their heads in disgust at the judge's placement of Crown that year.
dllasfan87 1 year ago
@reverberate10 Still no excuse. If I want vocals I will go see a choral concert or a play. I want drum corps, not theater!

@reefedflamdragsFTW

LOL. I don't know when this was posted but I would even add Phantom of 2008 up their with the greats.
fsmsg 2 years ago
I remember watching BD '04 live a world championships. During the performance where the corp hit the pedal tones... the whole stadium shook it was so powerful.
