  • The old flick was so faithful to the novel that it seems pointless to remake it. Just watch the original, its a masterclass in less is more, and more chilling, disturbing & hedonistic for it.

Hurd Hatfield is timeless as the androgenous Dorian, evil, vulnerable and beautiful, as if he was born to play Gray; Angela Lansbury is an absolute beauty; and the mephistophelian George Saunders steals almost every scene. You wont be disappointed.

  • :S i don't like this version! is no like the book

  • great film, watched as a kid gave me the willies. so much better than the new one.

  • movie scared the fucking shit out of me when the picture was shown, nothing else has come close to how I felt then.

  • excellent film, what does it profit a man to gain the world and lose his soul!

  • Being a 16 yr old without a doubt this version of my favorite book is the best, I love this movie.

  • Lewin's direction and framing are incredible - a must-see

  • when i saw the portrait of his complete transformation, i couldnt go into a dark room for a week

  • Angela Lansbury was gorgeous back in her hay day, such a wonderful actress

  • Great clip!

  • ive seen the most recent remake of this film, and i quite liked it, but would love to watch this one, does anyone know where i could get it ?? funny finding this by accedent, i was originally looking up a young angela lansbury lol :)

  • @cfkcatfish1 This is one of my favorite films of all time! I believe it's available for rental from Netflix and for purchase at Amazon. I recommend the latter. It's worth it. Angela Lansbury was very young when she did this. It must have been one of her first films. Hurd Hatfield was a very good Dorian but it's George Sanders who really steals this movie as the elegant and cynical Lord Henry. P.S.- I once saw the corrupted painting that you see near the end of the film when I was a kid.

  • @MsAppassionata im from scotland so dont have netflix avalible here, so im going to have to buy on amazon i think lol :) thanks very much for letting me know.

As for angela lansbury, i seen her on wiki in one of the pics they had of her in this film (i wanted to see she wasnt always as old as she was in murder she wrote and even younger than she was in bedknobs and broomsticks lol) im looking forward to seeing this version of the film, thank you for your help :)

  • @cfkcatfish1 You're welcome (-:

  • "Men and women alike all fell under the spell of his charm..." Yeah, they kinda left out the homosexual undertones in this version, lol. Between this one and the 2009 version, both are good in their own rights. (Though I did LOVE Colin Firth as Harry. <_< )

  • excelente filme....

talvez essa seja uma das melhores versões para o cinema já feitas dessa história de Oscar Wilde

  • ""he Picture of Dorian Gray" is a classic horror movie. I was only 7 years old when I first saw this movie in 1952, and it's right near the top of my list of favorite old movie classics of all time such as "Kings Row", "Edison the Man", and Gary Coopers "Sgt. York".. The script and leading actors Hurd Hadfield, George Sanders, Donna Reed, and Peter Lawford make "Picture of Doran Gray" a movie unmatched in superiority even by today's standards.

  • Never read the book, but I really hope to now. Gotta find it first. >.>

  • Just finished watching this. So, so amazing! I'm going to have to reread the book soon! ^-^

  • @jeannielovesrick62 We are currently reading this book by Oscar Wilde in our English lessons.

  • This old flick looks lots better than the 2009 version.

Gotta see it. Great thought provoking story.

  • Excellent movie, great acting! I would surely recomend it.

  • he's sexy!

  • ale z tego co pamietam w tv leciala jeszcze inna wersja tego filmu z bardzo chora muzyczka

  • x lo menos no es un fiasco como la del 2009

  • what is that supposed to be at 1:45?

  • *SPOILER ALERT*

^That pretty much describes this trailer.

  • I just finished reading the book and I can't imagine the movie could do it justice.

  • @plusbabs At least see it for the portrait in its hideous form, its disturbing and unsettling, but very memorable.

  • Watched this with my mom when I was a kid. Never forgot it or its lesson...

  • This book was so amazing. I must watch the film; it looks fabulous!

  • Want to see this film!!! :D

  • Wonderful movie. I remember it. George Sanders practically steals the show with his suavely diabolic Lord Henry. Thanks for posting!!

  • Rod Serling
