Simply Magical....if we watch we see her shaping ...."sound shaping" each note, note by note....it is easy to understand if you play a bowed instrument...viola, violin...etc...
If we need more "lip flapping" to get tone and expression this good....show me those with so called "correct technique" who are even close: Bartoli has a nasty stacotti tone, Sumi Jo, not close, only Veronica Cangemi is close, and she has her good share of mouth movement....Traditional Voice people rethink yourselves....
I agree with "ArnesonZach". Vivica has a beautiful voice, and an excellent technique. Very few singers manage to mach her coloratura and accuracy. Now, I guess some people will always try to invent problems when they can't find anything wrong with an artist. There is no such thing as "beautiful sound combined with an atrocious technique".
I do understand your point, but if something works, how is it the "wrong" technique? Maybe our idea of technique could be changed. People singing really complex coloratura usually look funny anyway :)
No, you're not understanding. Yes, I know they look funny, but they produce the sounds in a correct way. She doesn't. I watched a few of her rehearsal videos and it gets even worse in some of the other arias she sang. She uses her lip flapping (not to sound mean, I have no better word) to produce sounds that other singers can produce using a proper technique.
She is a brilliant singer, nonetheless, just not the most technically impressive I've seen, giving those obvious faults. :)
It is amazing, how many "professors of singing" dare to blame Vivica for "fake coloraturas", "wrong technique", "chin tremolo" etc.
Any person with only a minimum knowledge of singing technique can hear, that Vivica "produces" her coloratura properly. Her cascades of coloratura are NOT coming from her chin but from her diaphragm!!!! In a word: Her technique is brilliant!
The "mouth-thing" of Vivica is strange indeed. But since she cannot stop it, let us try to love and enjoy Vivica with it! :-))
When I watch the great Pavi, he never moves his mouth unnecessarily, only in the high notes he is opens his mouth, otherwise, he sings almost like a ventriloquist!

I have been warned not to watch this singer because she has the most grotesque facial and mouth movements...now I see why. It's like she biting every not with her whole mouth! What is that?
I've seen several videos with this singer but so far none have matched musically with her singing! (out of sync? or just bluff recordings?) If she really IS singing she is amazing!
SEVEN times?? Wow wienerfr, I count only 5. But true, I wouldn't have believed her videos (esp Qual Guerriero) are not manipulated until I could attend this miracle personally.
Haha, as it's so difficult to find out about her future concerts (is her calendar webmaster still hibernating??), she keeps us always alert and watchful lol.
Btw I forgot to count in her early Rossini and Monteverdi roles in Munich, actually I've seen her already 8x now (sorry, haha). But definitely, after having heard so many different styles of her (until German Romantic Lieder!), for me the highest form of art is her singing late baroque virtuoso arias, there she's simply unsurpassed.
It was a Händel concert, and I'm afraid only this area is available... Every year, a DVD is produced with the season highlights, and this area was part of it for the 2006 edition. It was a memorable performance, but that's all we've got, I'm afraid... And I'm not aware of any broadcasts either, at least not in Catalonia.

Who cares how she moves her mouth? The sound is beautiful, and I happen to pay more attention to the music than to jawlines and teeth.

@ArnesonZach I think it works while she is still young, but I hear in her voice bad technique that can last only few years, unfortunately.

What a lovely aria! Vivica shows her delightful mezzo and perfect coloratura that made an enormous succes in her Haendel concert in Rio de Janeiro.
I was lucky to be there. Thanks, Bejun!!

Here is an other thing: her mouth is moves to much, because she has a "chin-tremolo".
My teacher said, it is the consequence of improper technique.

I love her voice, but why does she pulsate her mouth?
actionsrlouder 3 years ago
In an interview I read she could not control it but it also gives her more agility for the colortura.

When you upload to youtube, sometimes the uploading process throws the video and the audio out of sync. Dunno why, but that's how it is. :o)

Beautiful, beautiful!
Was it a whole Alcina performance? The role of Ruggiero suits her SO well, it's virtuosity plus emotion, Vivica masters both.
Hm, from Ruggiero there's ONLY Sta nell'Ircana on CD (I'll never understand ... ). Did she sing it in Barcelona??
Gudrun74 3 years ago
I dont know. I got it from the web. It says it was a concert anything else.

I found this on google :
Händel, Opera Highlights
De La Merced, Genaux
Orquesta Sinfónica del Gran Teatre del Liceu
23/03/2005.
It seems to be this concert as there is another female singer sitting.
wienerfr 3 years ago
Hm, seems to be this concert (but 2006?).
Oh, she must have sung "Svegliatevi ..." from Cesare, NEVER heard from her! And indeed "Sta nell'Ircana".
Finding out about Vivica's concert is a major challenge. Every 2nd or 3rd one is even listed on her homepage (better than nothing) ...
Gudrun74 3 years ago
You are right, it was 2006. I was mistaken...

Excellent idea to produce a DVD with season highlights. Don't know of any other opera house that does this.
