  • thats it ? Audyssey calibration in 2 min ? -_-

  • My receiver does not have audyessy, is that a good reason to upgrade or should I wait?

  • I ran the Audyssey setup on a Denon reciever. Every time I get different results ,the EQ is very similar every time, distance would be +/- 0.3 meter, and the channel level is the worst once I get -2dB for Front Left -1 for front right, next time I get -1.5 for FL and -3 for FR.

  • What are you using for speakers? Thanks :-)

  • @1981z28camaro Bowers&Wilikns 601S3 and HTM62 and Sony Pascal 835ED for surround channels;)

  • @player1CR thanks! how much for all of those speakers?

  • @1981z28camaro Well, I don't know where RU from, so I'll transfer our currency to USD, but don't take it "literally", electronics is more expensive in Europe(especially here, in the Czech Republic:/), than in US.

    The front bookshelves: 650$

    The center speaker: 550$

Surround Pascals were in Sony's home cinema set 835ED, it matches about 300$ for one pair.

    Subwoofer Sony WX90: 1100$

  • @player1CR cool, I want to build a wicked home theater system, I will have to build it up over a period of like 6 months tho, I don't make too much money, there's just so many different makes and models out there, it's hard to decide, your system sounds pretty good tho, how is it in person?

is the HTM62 speakers your center speakers? I'm a little confused about which speakers you mentioned go where.. lol

also, have you heard of the Buttkicker?

  • @1981z28camaro Never heard of Buttkicker, sorry. Yes, HTM62 is the center channel;) I like the sound of B&W's. It's natural, detailed, very balanced. Nothing is "highlighted". Someone calls it a little bit "soft", maybe even "boring", but I don't like enhanced sound, you should listen to the sound of the recording, not the sound of the speakers;) That's my opinion. It's not a coincidence, that B&W's are used at Abbey Road - famous recording studio;)

  • @player1CR cool, I was thinking of getting Axiom speakers, do you know anything about them?

you should check out the Buttkicker, it will reach an extremely low frequency :-)

  • Strange listening position.

  • @QuantumStates What is strange at beiing on the top of the equilateral triangle?

  • That's quite a nice system ya got there! Im a Denon AVR 590 with a Toshiba 47HL167, myself, but the tests seem similar. After about a year, everything sounds okay. The Lion King definitely booms on my system and the rear speakers seem a little off, but its still very good

  • Actually, the test is the same, but the visuals are a lot different

  • I remember reading the Manual for the Denon Receiver and it strictly said *Recommend that no one is in the room unless the setup is complete* I have done the setup while im in the room and out and there is an actual difference, Ones body observes bass and audio there for the calibration will be off but it's impossible to notice. How i did i notice well, the numbers within the test don't lie.

    PS. I could be wrong!

  • Mic needs to be placed in the center of the room where you or people sit.

Placing the Mic that close to the speakers creates false imaging and sound balance

  • shame you couldn't have your projection screen lower (it's kinda like being in the front row at the movies)

  • hey bonehead, if you sit in your normal place that you watch tv in you dont have to leave the room, please dont make foolish comments.

  • Sound bounces off the walls, and reflects all around the room. It's the reason you're doing the setup in the first place. But I don't agree you need to be out of the room. Just back out of the way as you can get.

I do agree however that is way to close to speaker to measure. Which onkyo is that, unless the crap versions are different that is no where near where its supposed to be when doing the test.

  • The mic is way to close to the speakers...unless that's where you actually sit when you watch a movie?

  • It's placed in listening position and in another 4 places.

  • Yea, I also second that, you need to be away of the room when doing the calibration. I normally step outside the door, stretch my hand with the remote, press enter, and then close the door super fast. Without slamming the door, and wearing socks to not make noise when I walk out, of course.

It's a little extreme, but it does yield better results. I've ran that damn test like 10 types already. Every new home, or every new piece of furniture requires it.

  • Sorry, but there is no logical reason to not be in the room. Are you behind the door when you're watching a film too?:)

  • @player1CR

Of course not, but is always good to be away so the software can get a more accurate reading of how your room looks like. That's all that MultiEQ does, gather measurements.

Even the manual tells you that you should step aside, and use a tripod to place the mic.

Also, you should place the mic in your listening position, around ear level when siting down, NOT next to the speaker. Seems like you didn't read the instructions.

  • @player1CR it's because you could make noises (breathing, clothes moving) which alter the calculations

  • @Venezuela305 It makes more sense to be in the room during the test.. The whole idea of Audyssey calibration is to set distance for timing, crossover point(s) for smooth bass, and EQ for the room. If you aren't taking yourself into account during the EQ stage then you're optimizing the system for an empty room.

Either way the differences between being there or not are negligible. You could probably have a quiet conversation during the test and get the same results to be honest..

  • @ParadigmShifty

You do realize what you're saying right? If that was the case, what happens when you bring the GF over? Now there's an extra person. You run another test? lol.

During the test, you measure for the different seating positions. You don't need to be in the room, because you already told the receiver where you would be sitting. My receiver has 3 seating positions, others have up to 9.

Since you won't always sit in the same place, why not measure the room alone, the only constant.

  • @Venezuela305 Like I said "Either way the differences between being there or not are negligible. You could probably have a quiet conversation during the test and get the same results to be honest.."

This calibration is really basic, and not intended to be a reference point. The EQ in particular is really limited. It can't completely compensate for room acoustics, especially bass modes. If it did it would surely result in speaker damage trying to get +-1dB 20Hz-20kHz.

  • @ParadigmShifty

Yeah, it's not the best thing in the world, but it does such a terrific job. I have an Onkyo TX-SR606, along with tSc P6 speakers (see my channel). The different it makes can only be described as a miracle. It makes my speakers sound so different compared to DIRECT mode.

It also does great things for my sub too. With EQ the sub plays loud, with no distortion. In DIRECT mode, the sub sometimes just goes without limit until distorts (Transformers). It's room dependent, but good.

  • @Venezuela305 haha yeah, Transformers has a ton of LFE! I don't think the Audyssey setup does anything to the sub, it only sets the loudness of it. I had my sub turned to 50% and the setup put -16dB for the sub, the bass was way too loud until I learned that it cannot go any lower than -16 dB. So I had to turn my sub down.

  • Just a little advice, you have to leave the room wehen you are calibrating your system.

  • And the reason is...?

  • @player1CR The reason is, you are disturbing the soundwaves, when you arent in the sweetspot your body is changing the room resonance.

  • I was not in the space between microphone and speakers.
