I experienced this as a passenger in Singapore Airport back in 2006...Pilot made 3 attempts exactly as shown (and with lightning hitting the wing tips), then decided to land at another airport. I love flying, but it was very scary!
are you a pilot? yes you are probably a VIRTUAL pilot... the guy that was in the cockpit certainly knows more about aviation and missed approachs and all that stuff than you! TAP pilots are the best among the best, belive me
airmanship, eh? You can talk about airmanship when you are actually a pilot (being an armchair pilot DOES NOT COUNT!). I suspect that if YOU were to try that approach in those conditions (strong crosswinds) things wouldn't have gone very well. Stabilizing the aircraft? Only if you can make the turbulence disappear. As far as calling this pilot awful, again, shutup until you can fly yourself... FOR REAL!
standard procedure i expect,a pilot is trained for these minor hicups,a bit like a bus driver or a racing car driver, there are in control, most of the time, and follow strict guidelines,no disrespect to any pilots, when i mention drivers...
The only thing wrong with flying in to Portugal is the Airport! It's far too small to accommodate all the arriving and connecting flights going into Lisbon. Hopefully the government will decide where they want it sooner rather then later. I vote for Ota, its closer to where I live.
To my knowledge TAP has only ever had one serious accident (Flight 425). Of the 156 passengers, 33 passengers survived. It is obvious that air travel won't ever be perfected, but I think TAP does a very good job. They provide good service. I travel from Newark, NJ to Portugal at least twice a year, on TAP, and have never had a problem. I would feel a lot less safe traveling on United Airlines, due to recent financial problems they have been having.
Then I suspect you have never heard of variable winds. For one moment, the crosswind may be strong, but not impossible, and then the wind direction changes and, wow!, we're suddenly out of limits. I can guarantee doing those calculations on short final is NOT high on the priority list. Incidentally, if one finds themselves out of limits, off we go to the alternate.
Its true that I dont like TAP that much and I almost hate to flight on that company. Isnt because of the service, is the way the pilots interprect the things even dont facing a crosswind, for example LPHR - LPPT (one flight I had with TAP), the aproaching was awfull because the vertical speed down way was exagerated that when the plane stopped I didnt feel my head and body...
yes they didnt all the things wright, for example the altitude. But the approaching due to "answer" the winds was correct and very nice, the problem was that a gust hitted the plane when he was moving the tail and then caused that. Dont say "poor pilots blablabla" because if you were there piloting that plane on that situation, maybe you would crashed.
TAP have never had an accident? BAHAHAHA! They have had many my friend...do your research before you tell ANYONE to shut up. They also had yet another disastrous one not so long ago...
Mate, I dont mean recently...but do a google search, I mean a while back...One such example: Flight No. 425, Boeing 727 TAP, In Portugal itself. Dont get angry, look it up yourself guys
Great flying! I was on that flight! :D i puked all over the floor. The cockpit is great, with that wind it was neraly impossible to land the airplane but they did it at the 3rd time.
Actually I can and I have. What have you to say about that? I even bet we had Portuguese passengers on board who had more sense than to fly on suicidal TAP.
I love my country but I have to recognize that many things here are bad. The only way to get better is to identify the problems. I've been reading your comments about TAP on this video and on the Evora Airshow video. As a Portuguese that contribute with taxes to TAP, I would like to know more about possible bad experiences that you, or someone you know, had with the company in the past.
I cant beleive nobody was cursing?...in another 5 seconds its possible that it would have crashed and the camera guy is sitting there like its a normal day...Lol Rofl
what a pilot!!!! very bad weather and srtong cross winds from left to right and he recovered ther plane from a bad position when he almost cliped the ground.. just ear the motors when he pulls it up..
I think he meant "missed approach". A near miss is when to aircraft almost collide. A missed approach or "go-around" is when an aircraft as to abort its landing. It appears that severe wind shear was the cause in this case.
Please tell me u were joking around about the drinking.. Cuz only an idiot would say that. He had to land with the cross winds. Great piolate because he recovered that plane so well when it was swaying left to right.
You must be the joke. The aircraft isn't even lined up with the runway and the nobs at the controls decide to do a go-around after the wheels are 1 foot off the ground for 5 seconds. Pathetic. And your pilots are pathetic.
No, he was lined up correctly for a heavy cross-wind. Look at the first tree that comes into view in the foreground. Judging from that, I'd say the cross-wind was 60-70 mph.
Then look at the second clump of trees in the foreground. That area was probably down to 20 to 30 mph cross-wind.
I'd say it was a questionable decision to land and a damn fine recovery given the conditions.
Yes thanks for the comment, how ever its quite clear its a near miss with the ground, your comment was meant to be smart i think, however i actually fly for first choice and to me that was a near miss!

This was awful airmanship.
The pilot was struggling to stabilize the plane high well before the runway -- at that point, he should have called missed approach.
Instead, he tried to force the landing anyway and only at the last moment did he pull back and throttle up.
I don't know if this is representative of TAP Portugal pilots as the heated discussion above went, but this guy is awful.

that was some serious crosswind, its common for planes to turn around and try again in situations like that. nothing to get upset about

Yes you are wright, by my knowns, the crosswind limit to land is nothing more nothing less than 30knots wind speed.
PTMTerror 4 years ago
Every plane has a maximum crosswind limit in the manual, and I would bet money that in this case that limit was exeeded. FIND ANOTHER AIRPORT!!!!!

People you dont have information and culture about aviation and crosswind experience shouldnt judge here what is bad and what is wrong.
Since Im one of the citizens of Portugal but I live in Azores, I know that Lisbon runway is long but isnt infinit.

No actually they are very poor pilots. Your aviation standards are slightly better than the airlines of civil war ravaged African states.

So you can land a multi-engine jet with a cross-wind that snaps from 60+ to 20 or so mph?
If not, then I suggest you keep your poorly thought out opinions to yourself.
