I won't say that Macs are bad, because they aren't. There are plenty of areas in which the Mac excels. In my opinion though, Windows is superior in general. I use both frequently, but Windows runs better and I get much more use out of it.
I used to go to "ID Tech" camps in the summer, and we always had a Mac VS PC war. We would set the latest Macbook Pro (someone there could actually afford one apparently) and then a custom built HP Voodoo machine. The two would grind some serious benchmarks and then play some top-tier games. The Voodoo machine never lost :) That's the beauty of HP I guess.

The argument between PCs and Macs is completely pointless and stupid. If one is better than the other, what does it change? People who prefer Macs will buy macs, and people who prefer PCs will buy PCs. The argument we SHOULD be having is parfaits vs. smoothies.

The flagship Apple store here in Sydney is among the world's largest, and seems to echo the Apple marketing sentiment in a way that sometimes rubs Aussies up the wrong way. I've looked past the marketing to note their staff have energy & knowhow useful 4 all levels of user and the support 4 products is extremely good. It's easy see the benefits of that.
@inodesnet Oz!! nice, i worked in sydney for a while. Do you not feel that you're a bit stiffled by a mac though, my favourite thing abouts PC's (MS, linux, unix..) is that you can do anything with them and if you need any hardware to do that "anything" you just stick it in there and it works and their SO much cheaper.. The apple staff in regent street are like Zealots, but imagine in OZ they'd have to tone it down a bit or get whacked..
You can do this with all types of computers today. Cheaper, faster and often much easier and better than with a crApple. The Apple community is living in a marketing box. Someone has to tell them what they can do with an apple. Apple is a hype. They're selling old wine in new bottles.
The only mac I like is mac and cheese. The only product that mac will make that WONT suck will be a fucking vacuum cleaner, and even then apple enthusiasts will say its better than a normal vacuum because it has a fucking apple logo on it

@PhotoshopBro well he didnt mention how mac's have the only music and video editing softwares that are used in proffesional studios because they are the best and beat pc's. its actually proven that no proffesional studio uses pc's, they all use mac's.
also macs have way better sound and video quality, plus they are proven to be way easier to use. they also have a shit load of more extreemly helpful things and they have BCA which can switch the computer back and forth from mac to pc set up.

@k1noify actually i have checked this over with proffesors at college, whenever they make movies or music recordings, they always use macs cause they got better editing systems and they are better quality.
and i own a mac and a pc, i think i would know the difference. the reason most artists use mac's is because if they paint something off the computer, it's got the best screen quality so it's best. also the audio there's a clear difference. u obviously don't own a mac. buy both, then compare.

Yes, they are more expensive, thats a fact, about $500 per machine with similar spec's (Norway). But for that you get, big ass clickpad, backlight keyboard, LED screen, magsafe power plug (this is wonderful with kids around), feed in dvd burner(with the tray feed, i accidentally eject some times), twice the battery lifetime (4-5 hours vs 9-10 hours! ), and it ships with Unix based os (use linux on pc)
Best of all, had my mac for two years, and still happy(would never happen on pc)
@sigudian If it works for you then thats fine. I'll admit it might be a bit easier to maintain a mac system rather than a windows PC (mainly because of the lack of registry) but you will save a lot of money with a windows pc.

The case of Mac's predominance over Windows in A/V production has more to do with software, such as the stability and security of the OS.
Of course, Linux is about as secure and reliable as OS X as both share Unix origins (OS X is Posix certified), but the standards of the industry (Apple Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, Avid Media Composer) aren't available on Linux.

Nope. ASLR was available for Windows beginning with Vista. Linux had it beginning with 2.6.12. OS X had it since Leopard. All never had full implementation of this feature.

And, of course, that is the one mark against OS X in that it's meant only for Macintosh computers. You can make a Hackintosh, but that would be against the Apple SLA.

Just in case there is misunderstanding about when ASLR had support. When I was talking about how not all had full ASLR support, I was referring to Vista, Linux 2.6.12 and OS X 10.5. I forgot to clarify that complete ASLR implementation is the norm. But, ASLR is recent, with full implementation beginning just a couple of years ago. That's not "ages."
@k1noify I have several PC's and several Macs. Add to that countless corporate Unix boxes I work with. I can comment. Some nice parts out there. Seen $65000 CPU's beside $8000 PCI cards. But not in the PC world. Looking at my very cheap PC, I decided to spend a great deal on a high end graphic card for gaming. That was my PC's purpose. You can imagine then that I was embarrassed when my Mac with a lower spec card actually outperformed it when I installed the same game.

The quality of the audio and video in the digital domain has less to do with the hardware (using a powerful machine will be a given in a professional setting, during principal and post) and more to do with the quality of SOFTWARE.
As for "mid-range cards," this is not an issue in a professionally configured and calibrated system meant for post production work.
@allecctori You lose. I own 3 macs and I despise them. One just crashed 3 days ago. I was repartitioning the drive to make more room for Bootcamp and got the five language screen of death in the middle of the repartition. That trashed the entire drive. Went to reinstall the OS to find out that there was another disc in the drive. Absolutely none of the usual tricks worked to eject it, not even holding the mouse button down. So I had to disassemble the entire machine to get the disc out out.
@allecctori If it were a PC, I'd just have had to hit the eject button and be done with it. And if that didn't work, the paperclip trick would still work. But on a Mac? NOOOO, they use the slot loading drives that actually have a mere fraction of the lifespan of tray loading drives. Yet another piece of built in obsolesence from Apple. Did you know that Apple deliberately builds the machines in a way so that they're expected to have something go wrong with them after a couple years?
@allecctori No, I guess you didn't. Did you know that Macs didn't get preemptive multitasking until OS9? Windows had preemptive multitasking at Windows95. Amiga had it as AmigaOS1 which was back in NINTEEN EIGHTY FOUR and they debuted at the same Consumer Electronics Show as the Mac. Amiga running 4096 colors and Mac running... one bit color. Back then, the Mac used cooperative (slow) multitasking .Everything was either black or white. No shades of grey. Do a google image search for Mac OS1
@luccaskunk Why the hell would i care about OS1. I use OSX. You use Vista or W7. Windows' best operating system to date was released in 2001. For the average user, macs are far superior. The exceptions are gamers and people who can't afford macs. And any mac-user would admit, the machines are expensive. But if you can afford it, definitely better.

@allecctori They aren't expensive considering you get much of the core software needed out of the box. Imagine getting a windows with an iLife suite included! Hahah that'll be the day. Also they aren't expensive considering the resale value or how reliable Macs are. I've had plenty of windows computers, none of which have last beyond 6 months--I would spend no less than 700 for them too. Windows=fail.

Windows got their ideas from a combination of original from Microsoft's own engineers, Amiga, Mac, various Unixes, and Xerox. Same as Mac got most of their ideas from a combination of from those and Windows.
@blingkid47 However, being an owner of at least one of nearly every generation of every home computer platform and having developed software on and for them, as well as knowing the ins and outs of each system, I can say that I like Amiga best, then Windows, after that Linux, then Mac. Everything else is filed under Mac without any preference. Those are the systems that are completely and utterly dead and don't deserve resurrection.
@allecctori I've owned a mac....and didn't like it...HOWEVER, I can see why people would like macs. Their easy and simple to use without any problems...you'll need to have some experince and understanding to enjoy a PC.
The reason I switched back from the MACs was that when I wanted to use small programs that don't work on macs (and I'm talking about a lot).

Okay, I have a mac and a pc. I really love the mac, but the PC IS SO MUCH better. I do much video editing, gaming and I use all sort of different type of files which MAC DOES NOT SUPPORT, so I'm very limited with the mac. So I can barely do anything entertaining on the MAC. The main reason why I like the MAC is because it's harder to get viruses, it's more simple (but due to being very simple it loses further capability) and comes with lots of nifty other stuff.

@iscay666 sure you pay a little more for your mac, so 1200 bucks for a mac book, which in pc land could cost you 500-600 bucks, but that mac book will last you 4-5 times longer than that pc. you wont get virus, ur programs wont crash on you when work on it, and years down the track it will still be working as good as the day you bought it, i was a PC like you guys, but then realised how much money i was loosing due to crashes and all that so i did the switch, now i am not looking back!
@frosty3504 Crashes? What crashes? lol I have been using my pc with windows 7 since it came out and the only crash I got was when I was intentionally overclocking it and went to far. Win 7 doesn't really crash and when I was working with macs final cut pro would crash on me and the hole system would die losing me time and as a video editor alot of money. Macs you cannot custom build either. If you have had bad exeriences with windows its your own fault not windows itself.

@frosty3504 OSX and stable don't go together at all. Anyway I like to customize my own pc I like to custom build and mess inside the OS itself. Mac doesn't allow for that it allows you to change the gui and thats it, you cannot custom build a mac unless you order peices from the Mac overlords for exorbinent prices and even then mac has safe guard to stop you from installing mac software on non mac hardware its like when you buy a phone and its locked to the comany you buy it from, its annoying
@starkid423 the mac OS ONLY works on MAC, thats pretty rubbish, i mean really rubbish. Plug any bit of hardware in to a windows machine and IT just works, plug it in to your TV and it just works.. try doing this with a mac. Not to mention the limitless amounts of games, software and accessories that JUST WORK on a PC, whereas MAC users are left moving some photos from left to right. Face it MAC's are for babies, to say they just work is like saying a speak and spell just works.
@Jimbo60s I don't see the problem. Apples sells MAC OS X for Apple Intel based systems. Fair enough. Sun sells Sun Solaris for Sun Sparc systems. HP will sell HP-UX on HP Risc systems. IBM will sell AIX for IBM Power7 systems. One common thing among them is they're various flavours of Unix (whether SysV or BSD) from a pedigree of OS's that existed long before even DOS was released. If Microsoft was a hardware company it would allow room for a lot more stability.

@Jimbo60s I have been attending free pro classes lately. Roughly 8 hours of free lessons for some of their products. I have been impressed by the ease at which the staff have been able to jump from explaining something technical for my level down to a beginner level for the elderly people who were also keen to learn. High quality lessons for no cost. I doubt a Ford car salesmen would provide similar after sales care (for free) once a car had left the showroom.

Yes a pc does all of that & cost's less, A Mac just does it better faster smoother & is more reliable, I switched from a Pc to a IMac & I can say its so worth it, Im not saying Pc's are being replaced but if theres something my mac cant do, it can also run windows at the same time as Mac OsX although the only thing is you have to wait for updates to windows & the usual virus protection BS. Theres nothing wrong with pc's but there is loads wrong with windows, as for gaming well I got a 360.
@rudeplatypus naa Im sick of the pc's giving me grief my mac runs great every time & I get done what I wanted to do & when I want to play games I use my Xbox, most games Ive wanted to play on a pc in the past have been console ports anyway. Il never regret getting my mac but I do regret spending alot more than what it cost on pc's over the las 3 - 4 years. Mac' arent perfect tho nothing is, they are just another computer but Im sure this one will last me another 3 - 4 years or more.

@PhotoshopBro well he didnt mention how mac's have the only music and video editing softwares that are used in proffesional studios because they are the best and beat pc's. its actually proven that no proffesional studio uses pc's, they all use mac's.
also macs have way better sound and video quality, plus they are proven to be way easier to use. they also have a shit load of more extreemly helpful things and they have BCA which can switch the computer back and forth from mac to pc set up.

@k1noify actually i have checked this over with proffesors at college, whenever they make movies or music recordings, they always use macs cause they got better editing systems and they are better quality.
and i own a mac and a pc, i think i would know the difference. the reason most artists use mac's is because if they paint something off the computer, it's got the best screen quality so it's best. also the audio there's a clear difference. u obviously don't own a mac. buy both, then compare.

Yes, they are more expensive, thats a fact, about $500 per machine with similar spec's (Norway). But for that you get, big ass clickpad, backlight keyboard, LED screen, magsafe power plug (this is wonderful with kids around), feed in dvd burner(with the tray feed, i accidentally eject some times), twice the battery lifetime (4-5 hours vs 9-10 hours! ), and it ships with Unix based os (use linux on pc)
Best of all, had my mac for two years, and still happy(would never happen on pc)

though I'm not, I just think the things that next to no laptop PC's have are worth the price up for a macbook pro.
And i opt to use unix based operating systems anyway, thought I would run linux on my mac when I got it, but tried OS X and it's okay for me :)

@sigudian If it works for you then thats fine. I'll admit it might be a bit easier to maintain a mac system rather than a windows PC (mainly because of the lack of registry) but you will save a lot of money with a windows pc.

@k1noify hahaha i've owned a mac for how long now? and i've also had a pc for how long now? just go to best buy and check out the quality. you'll notice the extremely amazing screen quality and the sound quality sure beats the pc's. i would definitely know, u dont know because u dont even own a mac.
and plus, im not talking about price. im talking about quality of the computers and the companies. theres a huge reason that macs cost a lot more.

The case of Mac's predominance over Windows in A/V production has more to do with software, such as the stability and security of the OS.
Of course, Linux is about as secure and reliable as OS X as both share Unix origins (OS X is Posix certified), but the standards of the industry (Apple Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, Avid Media Composer) aren't available on Linux.

Nope. ASLR was available for Windows beginning with Vista. Linux had it beginning with 2.6.12. OS X had it since Leopard. All never had full implementation of this feature.
And ASLR is but one venue of attack. There are others, particularly with Windows.

That's not stability. That's compatibility.
And, of course, that is the one mark against OS X in that it's meant only for Macintosh computers. You can make a Hackintosh, but that would be against the Apple SLA.
Linux, of course, is legal to run on many computers provided you abide by the terms of the appropriate license, usually the GNU General Public License.

Just in case there is misunderstanding about when ASLR had support. When I was talking about how not all had full ASLR support, I was referring to Vista, Linux 2.6.12 and OS X 10.5. I forgot to clarify that complete ASLR implementation is the norm. But, ASLR is recent, with full implementation beginning just a couple of years ago. That's not "ages."

@k1noify I have several PC's and several Macs. Add to that countless corporate Unix boxes I work with. I can comment. Some nice parts out there. Seen $65000 CPU's beside $8000 PCI cards. But not in the PC world. Looking at my very cheap PC, I decided to spend a great deal on a high end graphic card for gaming. That was my PC's purpose. You can imagine then that I was embarrassed when my Mac with a lower spec card actually outperformed it when I installed the same game.

The quality of the audio and video in the digital domain has less to do with the hardware (using a powerful machine will be a given in a professional setting, during principal and post) and more to do with the quality of SOFTWARE.
As for "mid-range cards," this is not an issue in a professionally configured and calibrated system meant for post production work.

@allecctori You lose. I own 3 macs and I despise them. One just crashed 3 days ago. I was repartitioning the drive to make more room for Bootcamp and got the five language screen of death in the middle of the repartition. That trashed the entire drive. Went to reinstall the OS to find out that there was another disc in the drive. Absolutely none of the usual tricks worked to eject it, not even holding the mouse button down. So I had to disassemble the entire machine to get the disc out out.

@allecctori If it were a PC, I'd just have had to hit the eject button and be done with it. And if that didn't work, the paperclip trick would still work. But on a Mac? NOOOO, they use the slot loading drives that actually have a mere fraction of the lifespan of tray loading drives. Yet another piece of built in obsolesence from Apple. Did you know that Apple deliberately builds the machines in a way so that they're expected to have something go wrong with them after a couple years?

@allecctori No, I guess you didn't. Did you know that Macs didn't get preemptive multitasking until OS9? Windows had preemptive multitasking at Windows95. Amiga had it as AmigaOS1 which was back in NINTEEN EIGHTY FOUR and they debuted at the same Consumer Electronics Show as the Mac. Amiga running 4096 colors and Mac running... one bit color. Back then, the Mac used cooperative (slow) multitasking .Everything was either black or white. No shades of grey. Do a google image search for Mac OS1

@luccaskunk Why the hell would i care about OS1. I use OSX. You use Vista or W7. Windows' best operating system to date was released in 2001. For the average user, macs are far superior. The exceptions are gamers and people who can't afford macs. And any mac-user would admit, the machines are expensive. But if you can afford it, definitely better.

Also they aren't expensive considering the resale value or how reliable Macs are. I've had plenty of windows computers, none of which have last beyond 6 months--I would spend no less than 700 for them too. Windows=fail.

Windows got their ideas from a combination of original from Microsoft's own engineers, Amiga, Mac, various Unixes, and Xerox. Same as Mac got most of their ideas from a combination of from those and Windows.

@blingkid47 However, being an owner of at least one of nearly every generation of every home computer platform and having developed software on and for them, as well as knowing the ins and outs of each system, I can say that I like Amiga best, then Windows, after that Linux, then Mac. Everything else is filed under Mac without any preference. Those are the systems that are completely and utterly dead and don't deserve resurrection.

@allecctori I've owned a mac....and didn't like it...HOWEVER, I can see why people would like macs. Their easy and simple to use without any problems...you'll need to have some experince and understanding to enjoy a PC.
The reason I switched back from the MACs was that when I wanted to use small programs that don't work on macs (and I'm talking about a lot).
and yes...I missed the games.
MACs don't suck, I just prefer Windows rather than Mac

Okay, I have a mac and a pc. I really love the mac, but the PC IS SO MUCH better. I do much video editing, gaming and I use all sort of different type of files which MAC DOES NOT SUPPORT, so I'm very limited with the mac. So I can barely do anything entertaining on the MAC. The main reason why I like the MAC is because it's harder to get viruses, it's more simple (but due to being very simple it loses further capability) and comes with lots of nifty other stuff.
I like the PC more.

And no mac isn't good for professional video editing, just the noob stuff. Though I will admit adobe after effects is good. The rest of the mac video editing platforms really stink. But I can use AE in mac so why pay 10,000 on computer thats only worth $2,000 well you have fun on your overpriced internet explorer.

Price doesnt really matter though, you get what you pay for. You claim you have an expensive computer but I don't really tend to judge people, its just that most of the people that reply with PC biased comments have cheap $500-$600 laptop and rave about the price. BTW I dont only use my Mac for internet, I use it for everything.

@iscay666 sure you pay a little more for your mac, so 1200 bucks for a mac book, which in pc land could cost you 500-600 bucks, but that mac book will last you 4-5 times longer than that pc. you wont get virus, ur programs wont crash on you when work on it, and years down the track it will still be working as good as the day you bought it, i was a PC like you guys, but then realised how much money i was loosing due to crashes and all that so i did the switch, now i am not looking back!

@frosty3504 Crashes? What crashes? lol I have been using my pc with windows 7 since it came out and the only crash I got was when I was intentionally overclocking it and went to far. Win 7 doesn't really crash and when I was working with macs final cut pro would crash on me and the hole system would die losing me time and as a video editor alot of money. Macs you cannot custom build either. If you have had bad exeriences with windows its your own fault not windows itself.

I am a video editor to, i sit behind an editing suite 8-9 hours a day 5-6 days a week, I am not saying that OSX is perfect, i believe there are lots of problems with it as well. but no where near as many faults and screw ups as windows. and yes windows 7 is a great but it still has a long way to go before its anywhere near as stable as OSX

@frosty3504 OSX and stable don't go together at all. Anyway I like to customize my own pc I like to custom build and mess inside the OS itself. Mac doesn't allow for that it allows you to change the gui and thats it, you cannot custom build a mac unless you order peices from the Mac overlords for exorbinent prices and even then mac has safe guard to stop you from installing mac software on non mac hardware its like when you buy a phone and its locked to the comany you buy it from, its annoying

@starkid423 the mac OS ONLY works on MAC, thats pretty rubbish, i mean really rubbish. Plug any bit of hardware in to a windows machine and IT just works, plug it in to your TV and it just works.. try doing this with a mac. Not to mention the limitless amounts of games, software and accessories that JUST WORK on a PC, whereas MAC users are left moving some photos from left to right. Face it MAC's are for babies, to say they just work is like saying a speak and spell just works.

@Jimbo60s I don't see the problem. Apples sells MAC OS X for Apple Intel based systems. Fair enough. Sun sells Sun Solaris for Sun Sparc systems. HP will sell HP-UX on HP Risc systems. IBM will sell AIX for IBM Power7 systems. One common thing among them is they're various flavours of Unix (whether SysV or BSD) from a pedigree of OS's that existed long before even DOS was released. If Microsoft was a hardware company it would allow room for a lot more stability.

@Jimbo60s I have been attending free pro classes lately. Roughly 8 hours of free lessons for some of their products. I have been impressed by the ease at which the staff have been able to jump from explaining something technical for my level down to a beginner level for the elderly people who were also keen to learn. High quality lessons for no cost. I doubt a Ford car salesmen would provide similar after sales care (for free) once a car had left the showroom.

Yes a pc does all of that & cost's less, A Mac just does it better faster smoother & is more reliable, I switched from a Pc to a IMac & I can say its so worth it, Im not saying Pc's are being replaced but if theres something my mac cant do, it can also run windows at the same time as Mac OsX although the only thing is you have to wait for updates to windows & the usual virus protection BS. Theres nothing wrong with pc's but there is loads wrong with windows, as for gaming well I got a 360.

@rudeplatypus naa Im sick of the pc's giving me grief my mac runs great every time & I get done what I wanted to do & when I want to play games I use my Xbox, most games Ive wanted to play on a pc in the past have been console ports anyway. Il never regret getting my mac but I do regret spending alot more than what it cost on pc's over the las 3 - 4 years. Mac' arent perfect tho nothing is, they are just another computer but Im sure this one will last me another 3 - 4 years or more.

Personally, I prefer a Mac laptop over any PC laptop. But you could never beat a PC tower IMO.

lol the last time i had a virus was when i had XP 8 years ago! but seriously macs suck ass, i sold mine yesterday and built my own PC, now thats the way to go!!!
