i was at that corner and it's one of the memories i have of going down to donington regularly to watch the racing. i was 12 at the time and was so excited about seeing my hero mansell.
I think he thought the wheels were pointing straight but in fact he was still turning left, which is the angle we would steering after the save, the car got sideways, he corrected, the car griped and he never took the lock off. He might be one of the best in the world but I bet when you used to racing rear wheel drive cars that slide and you have to correct the slide with steering rather than with throttle like in a front wheel drive car you still find it hard
It's horrific. I've seen it some time ago on TV but I haven't heard the audio (there wasn't any audio I mean). But now hearing this, it's heartbraking. I can't find a better word for describing this... Just heartbraking.
Mansell was a class above everyone else on the field. I remember my Dad taking me when I was 9 years old. Was directly opposite this crash. Had to wear bin bags over our clothes to try and stay warm.
i was there tiff needell caught him he did not hit him mansell had already lost the car he was strugling for breath because the way you sat in a touring car is differant to a single seater (he'd been in indy cars all year)
i agree i was bloody freezing that day but a great race
@chambreski WELL HE WAS ALWAYS MOANING ABOUT SOMETHING IN THE WHINING BRUMMY ACCENT WHEN HE WAS AWAKE, SO WHY SHOULD BEING UNCONSIOUS BE ANY DIFFERENT LOL!
Wow, just wow. I remember seeing this on TV but I was very young, I don't remember that angle and I *definitely* don't remember the audio. How very scary, to hear him breathe after the recovery, then immediately get himself punted off and the fear as he's heading to the wall... Wow
I was there that day, I was on a hillside watching it. We all thought he'd been killed, I had never seen a car crash before, it's incredible what those Touring cars can take.
tiff knocked mansell off hes not moaning he says "oh no" when he see the solid wall hes about to hit. he was knocked out and red covers where put up around car.
@TheKartist it was Mansell's fault clearly, he did not watch his mirrors and as very slow car he wanted to get back to racing line very early..you can see that car which punched him out of track blocked its wheels for a short while

@leedstown where was Tiff supposed to go? Nigel had lost control before that contact, and came straight back across the track.
