I have a 1 yr. old cockatiel, could you tip me on how to learn him to lay on the back in my hand? I don't know how to teach him that, when i put him on the back in my hand,he starts to make some strange noise and tries to stand up,and starts to bite me too.
But usually he's a a very cuddly bird,he LOVES to cuddle,kiss...So I decided to start some clicker training with her. And would like to know how to get her stay calm and lay on the back in my hand..
I'm getting a parakeet this Saturday and I'm gonna train him/her to do this, you should make more trick videos and yes budgies can learn anything you want them to as long as it's healthy! A parakeet is a kind of parrot and it's also known as a budgie hope this helps.
My conure rolled to the side intead! what should I do? He slipped of my hand when i tried tipping and pushim him. Hes bigger than my hand so..... yah he can't stay there! GREAT VIDEO!!!!
Hi, Ive had two cockatiels for 6 years, but they still seem uncomfortable around me. Should I worry ? And what should I do to get them to start trusting me ? Thanks for the help !
@ MarianC44....I was just thinking the same thing when I saw this. I was given a lovebird as a gift a few years ago, and she came with a tonne of behavior problems, when I started doing research on parrots, there was a list of 10 things NEVER to do with any parrot that kept popping up and shoulder privileges was one of them. Once I made these adjustments, her behavior started improving very quickly....parrots will be comfortable on your shoulder for years, then one day...they will turn and bite.
hey i have 2 parakeets that aren't trained AT ALL and they're both grown up. My dad says that i cant take them out of the cage like my cousin does and let them fly because they're to wild but i want to make their life enjoyable but what can i do?
Hi froggi, i hope you can answer this: I have a peach-faced lovebird, he still has yellow feathers, and hes a baby, about 16 months old. I wanted to know how to Finger-Shoot your bird for them to play dead. Like when you do the action and say "boom" they would barrel roll or something. do yo ukno whow to do that?
actually u train the physical or visual command first not the verbal command and its sort of funny the way u are kissing it while saying reward reward reward!
my brother has a pied cockatiel and every time we get near his cage he makes this weird aggressive noise we adopted him for about 4 months ago. it might be 4 years old. Is there any way to make him/her not make this noise?
Nice tips! I am trying to reinforce my green cheek with word commands now. She is starting to mimick sounds we make which is pretty funny and I try to reinforce it. Thank you for your tip! I have subscribed!
Hi! I have a 3 year old lovebird, and she is pretty tame, besides for when she's in her cage. I adopted her about 2 months ago, and she knows me pretty well and seems to know my routine, and everything like that.
The problem is, that when I flip her on her back, she holds onto my finger. Like an upside down perch. How can I stop her from doing that? And she won't let go, until I let her go right side up.
Thanks for the amazing video, and I really hope that you can answer this question.
Yes, she'll do that for a while. Try perching her on your flat palm instead of a finger, then cup another hand over her and securely turn her upside down. Don't move your hands at all, praise her a lot, and then return her to an upright position. Do this regularly until she becomes calm with the situation...
The goal is to always have her feel VERY secure. I used to squeeze gently on the sides of her wings when she was on her back, so she didn't feel she would tip over.
@xosMiLeYfAcEo220 you can also try VERY 'lightly' tapping her beak, it wont hurt her, it will just tell her she did something wrong. if you say 'NO' and then tap on her beak she will learn that she did something wrong and eventually learn that a tap on the beak will come right after you tell her no. it will also help when trying to teach other tricks :) -K.M.P.
@MsPlayboy34 by perching her on your finger, holding her feet down and turning her upside dwn say summersault and help her come over and up again. i just figured this out with my lovie and now she likes training! lol
i have a blue crown conure and i'm going to try this with him :) he's four and hand trained, but i just got him. hopefully this will help him to trust me more :P
hey, i tought my lovebird this! i watched your vid, and trained her to stay on her back, then i helped her backflip, and in only 3 hours...she learned! but yours does it better. ^ ^

I want everyone to know who is watching this video the flip trick is cute. But this person is allowing the parrot on the shoulder. That is a BIG NO,NO
As long as a parrot is below eye level, they will not develop a dominance/aggression behavior from being on your shoulder. Widgee is 9 years old and has never bitten a face.
i liked it....my bird died because his best friend(they shared the cage, the food, the water, the toys, even my love) died...i wish i could teach him this trick....it's cool....
Remember, when you start, just tip her over for a BRIEF second, and get her upright before she bites. Try to figure out the signs her tolerance is being worn out, and always stop before you reach that point. If she bites as soon as you tip her backwards, use the finger-in-the-back-of-the-beak trick I teach on my "avoiding parrot bites" video. See if that helps! (NEVER let her know her bites hurt or that they accomplish anything!!)
k my lovebird used to nible my finger as a baby and i let her do it. now she i one year old and now her nibbles are bites that she thinks are nibbles. did i do something wrong?
i put my finger into the cage very slowly and i keep a seed wih the other hand, but he goes away. if i give him a seed, he catches it, but if i try with finger he is afraid...
Try using a stick at first. Something that looks like his perch. Say the words "step up," and encourage him to step onto it by touching it to his belly. Then, carry him out of the cage on the stick and transfer him to your finger with the same command. This is one way - let me know if it works!
if it allows you to stroke is stomach wen ur stroking is stomach try to kind push him of the perch slowly and not hard and he should step on ur finger

It's great that you teach how to do the tricks, all the other videos don't actually teach the viewer to do the tricks, they only show off. I'v been trying so hard to teach my cockatiel to go on her back. But now I think I'll try with this tecnique. :P
i was asking because i have tryed many harnesses for my cockatiel, Sydney, and none of them have been safe. (the feather teather, aviator harness ect.) her foot always get caught in the leg holes/straps. is the flight suit safe?
The flightsuit is easier than the harness, because there are fewer openings to get their appendages stuck. It's also more straightforward for you, and knowing what should go where. Give it a try - I definitely recommend it.
U r gr8 thankyou so!!! much no my bird will step up onto my palm with almost no fear!! thnx! and i'm still working on the flip but thnx any way---ur awesome--!! do u have an email address so that i can ask u directly if i haveany probs. Thanks again, bye!!
hi,every time i attempt to put my bird on his back he moves away!!he doesn't my palm very much although he loves scratches, he does not like to be touched neear the, wings, back, feet and tail! other than that he's a totally tame cockatiel! but when i do touch these areas he acts defensive and threatens my hand, so how will i turn on him on his back in my palm? plzzzz! help!!
Before this, I'd just work on getting him used to touching the uncomfortable areas. Pet the feet once, too fast for him to bite, then reward immediately. By moving quickly, you never reinforce biting behavior.
To get him to roll over, start by petting his back a little each day, until he gets used to it. Then get him used to being held and tipped back a little. Reward every time he does it without biting. Eventually, he'll let you tip him all the way back. It will take a while, though!
hi again,my bird does not like stepping onto my left index finger as i usually always handle him with my left!..also he does not like pratising the ladder...he always moves away without even stepping twice HELP!!!!!
well, I would start by offering a favorite food item, just beyond your finger, so he has to step onto the finger. Then let him eat it! Do so a couple times a day. I'd start doing it on a table or the floor, which is neutral territory, then practice on the cage. Let me know how it works!
while your bird is on her back, try scritching her chin, or doing something else that relaxes her. Try also holding her somewhat firmly, instead of just balancing her on your hand. The idea is to slowly get her to realize that being on her back is safe, so she will relax her feet. Be patient with her! :) With some exceptions, being on their back is a parrot's most vulnerable position.
