@poetikassasin The church has always incorporated the music style of the people. Jazz, Blues, etc. Not the other way around. Kats were always gettin kicked out for tryin to bring it into church. Ex) Thomas Dorsey
@joojoo456 Jazz is a VERY broad genre just as classical is. In times like these, it's often chosen because of its freeing nature (easy improv) but yet still having some structure. I'm positive these guys, just as any other GREAT musicians, have spent countless hrs learning different genres and have other influences. The key is to steal from many people across the board, be creative within yourself, and develop your own sound!! You can recognize the style, but the sound is different.

@03musiqman I knw he doesnt have to. I saw tony live when he came to CT, I stood abt 15 ft. away from him and he was playng a single bass pedal, and real talk he sounded average. The double bass allows a drummer to do more. My point is that spanky is dope without a single bass pedal, and tiny is average with that same pedal. And again i saw tony live. Real Talk!!!
tony and spanky are close. i believe that tony gets more hits because he's more well known than spank. but i think spank will give TRJR what he's asking for. but thats the thing abt musicianship.... you know its someone always better than you out there.....in a couple years, we'll be talkin about someone else!

Tony doesn't have the technique that spanky has, and spanks timing is years better than tony. I've seen them both play. tony and spanky are close. i believe that tony gets more hits because he's more well known than spank. but i think spank will give TRJR what he's asking for. but thats the thing abt musicianship.... you know its someone always better than you out there.....in a couple years, we'll be talkin about someone else!

@ishereal03 I respectfully disagree. Tony is the best showman of the two but spanky is the better drummer. Tony doesn't have the technique that spanky has, and spanks timing is years better than tony. I've seen them both play. Take that double bass pedal away from tony and he's just like any other drummer you hear. TRUST ME I KNOW!!!

@Jztwrshp3 LOL @ Tony's timing not being better. There's a reason why Spank isn't on the Diddy set while Tony STILL has the Jay set...and it sure as hell ain't money. Tony can do everything Spank does...Spank simply has the most creative mind in the drumming world. His licks aren't any more technical than a lot of cats...his placement sets him apart. That said Tony is the better drummer as he's more versatile....in the end though who really cares? They are both great

And u made my argument for me. Spank has the most creative drumming mind, u said so. Isn't it any musicians aspiration to continuously evolve as a musician. Spanky has, tony hasnt. Tony sounds the same as he did 5 years ago, spank doesnt. Its just a matter of opinion.

You act as if you're the only person that's seen them live. LOL I've played with spank, talked to both, and been to plenty of concerts that they hit. @bluefalcon24 No it doesn't but it is wat sets certain musicians from others. The musician can only go where his mind takes him/her. Ok tony is faster than he was 5 years ago but if you listen to his tricks its sounds the same. To me, and I was speakng on my experience of seeing them, nvr stated i was the only one who saw them; but again its a matter of opinion. Yes different styles so really cant compare, but spank is who i prefer to listen to. Let me ask you Tony or Virgil Donati. Similarstylz

@Jztwrshp3 he's definitely grown...just from a standpoint of session plays alone. I'm fine with liking Spank more heck I like him more and kind of think the way he does, musically speaking that is. Even so Tony is definitely the more polished drummer, which isn't a bad thing at all. As for your question....I'll take Tony. I like Virgil though

I just don't think that tony is all that everyone hypes him up to be. I've followed tony's whole career and he still sounds the same as he did when he made that DVD with D. Chambers. Spanky came a long way, and his technique and drumming theory is unbelievable!

@tmacspoon27 THE BEST!!!! Wow thats a stretch. Tonys not better than Dana Hawkins, Dennis Chambers, Larrone McMullen, i can go on. You have to do your homework. Spanky has way more drumming theory in his right hand than tony has in his whole body!!!! Drumming is more than speed and tricks. I learn things when i hear spanky play, I listen when i hear tony.

@Muziqboy06 How do you figure that? Tony doesn't have the pocket, ot the technique to handle spanky. Take that double bass away from tony and he's average. I've heard him live with a single bass pedal. The only thing tony has is speed. And lets not go into changing time on the set. NO ONE can mess with spanky on that!!!
