IMHO, It is rare that a cover is better than the original, especially if the original was written by the artist who first performed it, not delivered to them to sing. I liked Phil Collins with Genesis, and I liked him solo before Genesis, but I have disliked just about everything he's done since Genesis. I am not a huge Mariah fan, though I do recognize her incredible talent. I prefer her version to the original. She just seems to identify so strongly with this song, she made it her's.

I think that when an artist covers another artists' song, it is NOT to prove that they can sing it better than the original...To me, it just means that the covering artist is singing an original to give their version, flavor, feeling of the song. Many artists cover songs & add their touch to it. And many have a special connection to the original song. I happen to like all of the songs MC has covered, inc this one.

Some songs should not be covered IMO; Or maybe only on singing competitions.

I like this version. It's great in it's own right, and yes, i prefer Phil Collins version only because it's one of my favorite songs from all music ever written, hearing it for the first time when I lived in east Anglia and recorded him playing it live from Wembley Stadium. Mariah does it justice. Personally, I'd like to hear a Phil Collins and Mariah Carey do a duet of this song before the master gets too old to sing. Thumbs up.
