Actually an operating system, IS a piece of software. It's just got parameters for a graphical user interface(usually), and the ability to run other pieces of software inside of it. BUT, in the video he did specify not your operating system. THUS, for me, my favorite is, QQ Chat Client. Makes screen shots fantastically simple for dealing with game developers.

convertxtodvd, nero 8, dvd shrink, virtualdub (you might find that one useful), any dvd converter professional, mkvmerge and mkv cleaver, jdownloader (best downloader ever) hddregenerator (fixes bad sectors on your harddrive, doesn't hide them, it actually fixes them) udpixel (dead pixels on lcd screens are not always neccasarily dead, they are just stuck, udpixel gets them working again)

It is a free picture viewer with a few extras, it can resize, color correct, view virtually every picture format. For example Photoshop format files. Its a little ripper in my opinion. Its great for batch thumbnailing pictures as well if you make web pages.
