Nevermind, read some other comments and figured out they definitely aren't from the U.S. I personally loved the diction. They did go a little sharp, but one thing I absolutely loved was the united tone of the voices, particularly on holding out "stood."
It is by far, not the worst performance of this song I have heard. It is different, yes, but if I'm not mistaken, they are not from the U.S. (at least that's what I gathered from the description). I thought the pronunciation was very good, the light soprano tone was a pleasant change from what is usually done with this, and as for the movement, if it helps them feel the music and get the rhythm right, what's the harm in it? Interesting interpretation though, I thought it was pleasant.
i couldn't hear the alto's. especially on the really low note. that's a very important note in that part of the song. otherwise pretty good! your guys really seem to be into the music! :)
Not that I have as much "credentials" as a load of other commenters, I do have to say that for the most part the song was good, however I did not completely watch it - only listened. I do think the sopranos were having a little trouble with pitch on the high notes, but it only takes 1 singer to sour a note!
In my opinion, if they want to dance, dance they should. If they feel that the rhythm forces them to move, so they should move. As for being a spiritual or gospel... Dude, listen to the rhythm of the male's voices and tell me if it's so outrageous the idea of rocking to that. Yeah, there are a couple of screams, but they look like kids and they do a good job. Beware if anyone does a less than perfect job! They don't claim to be the best choir in the world after all.
i think this is the worst performance of ELijah Rock i've ever seen in my life...what was with all the rocking?? it looks as if you guys are struggling to get through the song and i don't understand why any certified choral director would have the audacity to do such an injustice to this song...the only positive comment i have is that you all have excellent dynamics. nontheless, I'm sure Moses Hogan (rest in peace) is turning over in his grave at the DISASTROUS ending.
*in reference to the aesthetics, it's an injustice to the late and great arranger of this work, Moses Hogan, to watch the lack of emotion on everyone's faces and in reference to the "rock/sway" that this choir insists on doing, that should have been reserved for gospel music, not a spiritual
.*there is a changed in tempo when the layering starts after "if i could, i surely would stand on the rock where Moses stood" HOWEVER it looks more like the choir and the director lost control and it should have been much slower
From a preofessional vocalist's point of view, this is the tied for the best recording of "Elijah Rock" on Youtube. There were a few trioble spots but Well done. And considering a the size of the group the sound is quite impressive.
I didn't read the description, so I listened, and I thought, wow, pretty good. Then I read comments saying someting about good English. Oh, you guys are German. I didn't even notice. Good job.
"Snake in the grass" and "He's a liar" were a bit sharp, and I agree with the other commenters about the "Hallelujah Jesus" and overly loud sopranos, but other than that this recording is really great! Awesome job :)
The sapranos were off. But everything was really perfect til the end... which is the great money piece. But you guys got the english down really well.
the tenors at the "Hallelujah Jesus" part was kinda annoying, i think better diction is needed. Like in most choirs, only one or two sopranos sing certain parts (I'm gonna butcher the spelling..abagodos?) and especially in a song like this, where dark tones are required, even male falseto are also used. In other words just dont overpower certain parts. But this is the best verson of the song I heard on you tube. And great use of dynamics, good conductor
your sopranos are TERRIBLE! They dont blend well with the choir or with each other (especially when it breaks into 1st and 2nd) Plus the one thatr tries to sing louder than the rest doesnt resonate her voice through her diaphram but instead pushes it out her whiney sounding throat. ugh!
The rest of the choir though, short of amazing. very nice
i'm impressed by the conductor, too. he seems like an amazing person to train a group to perform that well.
i gotta dissagree with the dancing thing... it's not "dancing," it's just moving with the beat, and i think it's appropriate for this kind of song. but that's just me. it can really enhance a performance if done right just by helping the performers...
That's very good. Our choir listened to a recording of this one day and we all absolutely loved it but never did try it. Anyway, this choir's version gave me chills.
Oh, yeah! I did this song when I was in a choir a while back, and was unimpressed with what we as a group did with it. This one totally blew my mind. I agree with everything that was said about tempo- spot on. Sadly, I also have to agree with the comment on the dancing.
Overall very good, but like with a lot of choirs there is WAY too much soprano, especially first soprano.
I like that you did the "oooooh elijah" slower like we did, a lot of choirs do it sped up and I don't like that, takes away from the effect. But overall very nice =)
aha! great sound! bravo!!! you guys did good, i watch a lot of videos of choirs performing this song and i have been very critical on them all, but not this time, very nicely done, you all kept your tempo nice and steady slow and fast when it should be, the blend was very good, dynamics were good-a little more and the song in my opinion would be perfect!! another thing, great job getting into the song it put more emphasis on the spiritual part of this song. GReaT JOB!!
Good sound, but it was very choppy and all over the place. It was a VERY bad interpretation with a good sound.

oh and by the way, in case anyone's wondering why i dislike this performance, here's why:
*being a professionally trained musician with eleven years of experience in professional opera and spirituals, i noticed that: the diction was unclear
chords were wrong, especially at the end when the eight layers can be heard

The group is great, except the sopranos really should cut back a little. They are overpowering. Still a VERY GOOD GROUP.
The girls divisi in the middle is beautiful, alto's were not as loud as the sopranos, but good intonation.
