Do you ever try to work on his 'typing' technique? You know, he said he applied his typewriting skill to the bass: he 'typed' the strings as he did typewriter keys at his tax guy job before he could survive off Who money. Plus he said he has the lightest touch, you don't see those strings bouncing around so much on close-up video. I tried it, it really works but it takes about 6 months before starting to get acceptable results. Great looking bass, and good sound.
I think all songs on Who's Last are from Detroit '82, their last show in the US. The cable pay-per-view / radio simulcast / Who Rocks America vid were from Toronto, shortly after this show. That was the final show on their farewell tour. Easy ways to spot the difference: mix quality, some of John's improvised licks, Pete's solo.
Errrr...did you not notice this isn't the orginal version of the song? It's Toronto 82. Why would I play the original solo over the solo from that show...that wouldn't make sense now would it?
Well John actually had a mixture of Series 1 and Series 2 electronics....so that's what I'd plump for if I could. But it has Anniversary Electronics as it is, so it makes a damn good sound either way!
That bass was made by Warmoth, right? If so, I can tell because the limited edition Alembics were made with the "V" headsock from what I've seen. Plus, they had the gold truss rod plate, and the spider web inlay on the body.
No Jack, it was made by Alembic in 2003. It just predates the production of the LTD edition Spyders. The Truss Rod covers are brass not gold (as is mine). The only difference between mine and the Spyders are the web inlays and the headstock (I much prefer mine). So no, it is not a Warmoth, it is 100% Alembic!
My bad. I never knew that there was another model produced aside from the Spyder. I meant to say brass, but was thinking gold for some reason. I can't see your trussrod cover in that video.
I was on Warmoth's site, and there was a picture of an exact duplicate of that bass you're playing - racing stripes and all. Does Alembic still make the model you have? If so, how much is it and where can I get one? I happn to perfer the "V" headstock, but that's just me.
No distortion, that is the pure Alembic sound. The range of sound you can get is quite staggering. Yeah my Buzzard. The bolt on is no longer in prodution, in fact I'm buying a 2003 ltd etd Buzzard today so that'll be in a video soon. I'm not loaded anymore!!!! I'm selling the bolt on if you are interested? ;-)
Absolutely, Alembic will make anything you like. You can choose an Essence model and upgrade (the cheapest way!) everything. It would probably come in around $8000. There is a guy having an exact replica of John's bass made, I reckon that is costing around $30K!
That's cool. I do love that bass. I remember being 3 yars old and my dad playing videos on his Beta VCR of The Who. I was able to spot The Who at that age, not by the songs, but by what I refered to as "the bearded guy with the crazy-looking bass". That bass being that Alembic.
John did good by choosing that particular one. It was his most-intense sounding AND looking bass. Too bad he sold it to the Hard Rock. I was hoping he would play it when I saw them in 2000, but he had the Buzzard.
Yeah deffo his 'trademark' bass and it should be being played not hanging on a wall! Same with me....saw TKAA and before I could even play bass I wanted that Alembic....so cool!
But yeah, I would LOVE to have one of those some day. Perferably the one with the "V" headstock. And you say that Alembic will make me one if I order it, right?
You should get te 8 string model next. If you're ever looking for a good distortion preamp, I recommend the SansAmp RPM. I made a little video demo of it if you'd be interested in one some day.
You couldget some really good distorted Entwistle sounds out of it.
I'll take a look. I have just bought an Ashdown Sub Harmonic bass pedal and an Ashdown Drive pedal. The SH box produces a note an octave below the one you play and repeats it just behind the original also the Drive splits the bass signal into stereo so you can apply distortion to just the treble side as John did. Alembic will make your hearts desire!
I see. I remeber now that John became a rather big Ashdown user/endorser. I saw a cool Ashdown poster with John sitting down by his amps holding his Buzzard.
So the subharmonic generator is like an octiver? I read about Ashdowns and wondered what that did exactly. No stores carry Ashdown here, so I haven't got to test one out.
I have sen the Ashdown drive pedal in Musician's Enemy, but never tried one. That's cool that it splits it like that. My RPM does the same thing for mono application
Yeah, it's the best I've heard. It follows the original note so closely and really strengthens and fattens the sound. I played thru one of Johns Ashdown rigs last week and it has one built in on it and it sounds staggering. In fact I could have bought it but it is 6'3" tall and 3' deep - a tad impractical for the pub gigs I do!!!
ahhh what the hell. I say lug that beast into the pub, then tear the pub down with it. You mean it was ACTUALLY one of John's, or was it the same model/setup that he used?
It was John's practice rig from his house...1K preamp and a 1K amp...for a practice rig!!! The guy who had it before the present guy actually smashed glasses with the Sub Harmonic Processor!
You got to play through one of John's personal amp rigs? Any pictures? It was the ASS cabinets, right?
That sounds really fucking awesome, but I'd feel a little weird about playing one of my dead heroes' equipment. Oh well, at least it's still getting used.
That's right with the Ashdown preamp and amp. It was one of the first they built in 1997 and it had a Sub Harmoniser....sounded incredible! No pics though.....It was a little weird but exhilirating too.
ok, well, if you can play basic guitar, its not that hard, just know your keys, scales, and all that, and how to tune... and speed comes with practice like my friend here gareth. so does playing by ear, that comes with practice... so cheers friend, and good luck. if you have any questions, you can message me anytime.
I'm a bassist myself. Bass is very simple if you learn really easy stuff. But it can be really hard if you try more complex stuff such as playing chords and mixing up basslines and such. The first thing you should try to do is learn how to scale and then learn timing, then continue experimenting rythme and play songs that are simple and move on up
You don't see 'em everyday for sure! Normally you have to order direct and it can take a while....I know one guy has been waiting 3 years for his bass! You do see em in stores but generally basic models.
hey, gareth, ive decided im going to get the cheaper epiphone EB3 bass. thanks for helping me to decide! so, in a couple months i should get it, then i will do my
could not agree with you more, could you imagine a bass n00b (oh yes I went there) stumbling in goin "wat da fuk is an awimbec? but seriously awesome playing and sweet alembic very true to entwistle style for the isolated bass vid
Good question! I don't know if I have the answer either! Just like the look of 'em and 'cos the Special is 'active', I'd get more control over the tone. The Alembic would always be the first one I pick up!
Yeah they do...you can order any model with an Exploiter shape, individually tailored to your needs - thing is it costs a fortune! Check out the Alembic website.
Well played! It's strange how you only use your index finger, except on the faster parts where you use two. I use two fingers all along the song. I guess it just depends on how you feel most comfortable.
Soooo, who did you say you had to kill to get that bass? hehe
No probs! The 'horns' are hollow because Alembic put more electronics in there if needed. Other than that it's solid and not as heavy as you'd think...about 10/11 pounds.

That DOES sound like Entwistle's. Are you using any distortion, or is that just the active pickups?
I saw in another video that you have a Buzzard too. If I'm not mistaking, those are no longer in production eithers, are they?
You must be loaded to be able to afford both of those models.
