so sad. im a sledder for myself its so tragic, this area is ususally a low risk, its a small but steep hill. was there a week before. didnt think it would be this bad.
They knew the risks involved. Don't kid yourself, mountain sledding is an extreme sport, and an addictive one. The 200 people watching will wait a day or 2 and do it all over again. This WILL happen again regardless of precautions or rules. It is not a sport for the faint of heart.
Wow, so much heated debate ! I believe activity of any kind unbombed snow is very dangerous. BUT so is driving a car. Conditions like rain, snow and fog can make driving Extremely dangerous. But we don't need to close the roads.
You don't have a person drown in choppy water and then close the ocean down.
I think it is important that EVERYONE who ski's, sleds, -whatever- in the back country should have their AST 1.
Typical Albertan rednecks. Always coming to our province without medical coverage and expect we to pay for the shit. Sorry, the party is over. The bill for an ambulance ride is over $1k and if you needed an air ambulance...$7,000. We have bill collectors in BC too.
No one is proposing to make sledding illegal hence ban it and furthermore sledding accounts for less than 1/2 of the tourism activity, additionally there are other industries . As for the incidences above they were covered by insurance. Furthermore they are different situations with different intentions. Why was it absolutley essential for them to be on the slope that day? what was so pressing and immediate to the point where the event could not be postponed?
Not paying attention? I am amazed that 200 people got out of the way. Unless you have ridden there & understand the sport you should go back to your perfect little world and STFU.
The comments here are sickening. Anything is preventable if you aren't there. Thousands of people sled every weekend out there, this was an accident...it happens when you travel, when you play hockey, when you work. The people spouting off know even less then the media which is horrible. Highmarking...no shit...how do you think you make it over a hill?
The avalanche report was clear. EXTREME. What part of that is too difficult for an Albertan to comprehend?
No friggin wonder why people keep dying. They think EXTREME has degrees of extreme. Stay in your frozen tundra or die. Nobody here cares unless you don´t have a way to transport your dead body back hom,e.
You are a bunch of fuckin morons. It's pretty easy to sit on your couch and run down us sledders. We live our life, avalanches happen. Thats why when you go out you wear your beacon and carry a shovel and probe. So enough of this bunch of dumb rednecks shit and respect the fact that these people die doing what they loved.
No one is proposing a ban on sledding, but rather questioning the logic in going into the back country when there is a high risk. Is their need to ride up a steep hill so urgent and so important that they simply could not put it off for another day and not risk the lifes of others including children?
As for beacons - I wear my seat belt and have airbags...does that mean I can now drive dangerously.
We feel for the losses, but this was a preventable accident and two people did not need to die
You can go die doing whatever the fuck you like, seems to me if YOU did we would just be cleaning up the gene pool a bit but if you die doing something you love that endangers anyone else than your a fucking cunt , if you like doing stupid risky bullshit on your snowmobile than do it but it doesnt give you the right to risk a hundred peoples lives.
Everyone who sat at the bottom of that hill and got buried were partially at fault. Don't lay sole blame on the guy climbing the hill. There was people who watched this and never were in any danger, they parked in the right spot out of the runout zone.
yes they do just happen all the time. in this event a snowmobiler triggered it but people do get buried just being in the wrong place at the wrongtime.
they all knew the risks, the 2 that died were killed doing what they love.
Buck Melanoma. Moley Russell's wart. Not her wart. Not her wart! I'm... I'm the wart. She's my tumor. My... my growth. My... uh, my pimple. I'm Uncle Wart. Just old Buck "Wart" Russell. That's what they call me, or Melanoma Head. They'll call me that. "Melanoma Head's coming." I'm s... uncle! Maisy Russell's uncle!
We cannot ultimately stop sledders from going into the back country in dangerous conditions - We can however make them completely liable for all rescue costs - furthermore they should be liable for all health care costs. A $150,000 hospital and rescue bill should be enough to make someone think twice. Then again in that area, we are dealing with the red necks of our province.
Where did I say we should not at all rescue them? They intentionally and knowingly went into a high avalanche danger zone and proceeded to place themselves at the bottom of a 35%grade+ steep hill in the hundreds. They not only placed themselves in danger, they placed the rescuers in danger as well. The warnings were there and these people chose to ignore it and now they feel the rest of society should be financially liable for their intentional wrong actions....hell no!!
People smoke knowing full well the burden they are likely place on our health system - so we tax Cigarettes. People who purposely duck the ropes at the local ski hills and require rescue are often charged for the whole bill of rescue. Tax is on liquor to offsett the cost of health and others...there are many cases like this
Why should sledders have special exception and not be held accountable for their mistakes
what would you say to somebody who drank, then drove without their seatbelt on and got in an accident? This is soo sad, but they really should've checked the avalanche report, especially if they brought their kids. I mean an extreme avalanche warning was declared! and now the firefighters have to risk their lives getting them out. i hope everyone recovers, but it's really sad that this all could've been prevented.
