I wish people would learn to use fire extinguishers properly. Don't aim at the flames! Aim at the source of the flames (point-blank if possible) to starve the fire and cool all ignition sources below ignition temperature.
Excellent work! This is exemplary fire extinguishing mastery at its best. Despite what people think, the more people that rush the plane with extinguishers, the better. Fire extinguishers can sometimes be faulty, so more is good. I'm betting the pilot was very happy about the quick response of the ground team. No visible damage to the plane. : ) Good job!
Note to fire crews: When an A/C is coming in with an in-flight emergency, position people all along the runway so wherever the plane stops, there's someone right there. It looks like everyone started running down the runway *after* the plane touched down--and was rolling away from the crash crew. Good job anyway! Cool video!
ok looks like im the one who is going to have to ask...how much? i mean yea, countless hours of time. how much money does somthing like that cost? dont be embarassed you can tell us. totally awesome by the way.
Come on now Gentlemen, anyone who has worked around jets knows you never extinguish the exhaust, you direct the nozzle to the intakes and spray /through/ the engine, spraying the exhaust only blows the extinguishing media away from the fire. It's fortunate to see someone understand this later on.
the pilot is a master, very good hurry up landing and control of the plane with less than a half of the original power of the engine, VERY GOOD. Another price for the landing support team, very fast emergency response.
Maybe a piped in HALON on-board system can be installed. Then if the servos are not compromised can glide in. This would reduce repair costs. The problem would be weight
Heat + fuel + oxygen = fire. Take away one ingredient, and you put out the fire. My guess is, the engines were still hot, the fuel (oil?) was still leaking in and draft through the engine nacelles caused the reignition. Next time, guys - dry chemical powder or foam.
@JBofBrisbane and then have fun cleaning everything out later. The jet engines can handle the flames, it's the rest of the aircraft that has to be saved.
Both turbines shooting yellow flame......I'm probably wrong but to have both turbines throwing yellow flames has me thinking he was pumping too much turbine oil into the shaft housings.
@MrKyleSchick Hell no! You know how much money that damn thing cost?!??!? Gotta be in the thousands! They're not going to waste their money for some measly little crash.
Say the pilot was very happy with the outcome of his emergency landing...could have been alot worse ie.no plane left just a ball of flames...he would have to thank the other guys for their quick responce to the plane...great landing under pressure..
POINT THE DAMN EXTINGUISHERS IN THE INTAKE! Not from behind... geez.... Know how to fly a jet, but not keep one from burning. Glad you saved the plane though. Good landing also.
Maybe on larger (and more expensive) models like this you could add a safety feature to injects foam into the engines. I guess it would be a pain to clean, but better than fire damage. Also As OghamTheBold says, a slow CO2 feed into the ducts.
whats funny is the video i watched before this, the rc was on fire and only one extinguisher and it was empty, bet he was jealous when he watches this video
Good thing is that the plane doesn't look to much the worse for wear. The paint didn't look bad at all. I would say that the owner is fortunate. This could have ended much worse!
Maybe - caps to seal both engine ducts - would keep more CO2 in (and dreaded O2 out)
The 4 caps could be joined to allow 1 small CO2 cylinder to continually 'fill' the now relatively sealed turbine compartments (would need much lower pressure / volume / fill rate than the ones for much bigger fires)
Like a pair of giant pliers with 4 caps - 2 on each side for safely clamping front and back - a small CO2 bottle could even be incorporated in to the handle - set to relatively slow feed
SO GLAD you had so little damage, great reaction time and way to stay calm. That is a brilliant looking aircraft, the amount of work shows. Hope to see much more soon!
so the reason for this fire wasn't an issue with RC jets, but the fact that yours had an AFTERBURNER, am I correct? that's what I heard ppl talking about in the end, or was that just an idea someone had?
You're a moron. Jet fuel = extremely flammable. Oxygen = more food for fire. Jet turbine = high engine pressures, high fuel pressure, high air pressure. Pressure is conducive to thermal expansion (aka heat turning into a visible fire by consuming fuel)
Ooooh look a small engine fire why dont we go and take 50 guys and waste all our fire extinguishers when i can just pee on it so if ther is another fire we will regret what we did lol Hey we need back up so a guy in girl shorts ,sandels and a gay hat runs to the rescue. Cant we all see the airport firefighter wanna bees lol
Kudos to the pilot! Well done! I've been flying the kind of airplanes you get into since I was 17. I've been concerned in flight, but never scared. I flew a RC (two control) once. That's the only time I have actually experienced something like FEAR while flying, and I was on the bloody ground! RC flying skills are of a very high order. I stand in awe of good RC pilots!

@xjet If your flying jets chances are you have been in the hobby for some time and know how to control it in an emergency but like anything in this world anything can happen. This is why there are rules that protect people. Pretty slim chances anyone will be hurt if flown over the right area and spectators aren't wandering around where they shouldn't be.
Although seeing brave cameramen being struck by planes makes for great YouTube vids! LOL
@rva1945 The technology has advanced to the point where these things could obviously be used as weapons also. Where do you draw the line between a model and a drone?
@55chh Yes, you could look at things that way, but evil has always found ways to make commonplace things into tools for doing harm. It would be very difficult to find a place to launch and fly a craft like this anywhere near where it could do much damage significant enough to restict the freedom of citizens.
@rva1945 There are usually safety regs in place, but yes people have been killed by RC aircraft, not only jets. But as pointed out, more people die on the roads every day than are killed in any given year by RC aircraft.
