  • sheryl lee ralph

  • @TheDIVA3482 ummmmm Im not buying that lol

  • OMG This really made me cry. I remember singing this like it was yesterday! Thank you.

  • @TheDIVA3482 ....welcome....you performed in a production of Dreamgirls???

  • I really wish they wouldve kept the interchanging lyrics in the middle

  • Wow it just hit me that Decembr 21, this year marks the 30th anniversery of DreamGirls!

  • Hey babyboi1002,

This is AMAZING! Where did you get the audio from the actor's workshop of this song that plays at the beginning? That's Nell Carter @ 02:21 mark.

Carter was supposed to be in the "Effie" role. I read that DG creator Tom Eyen saw Nell in a musical called "Your Arms Too Short To Box With God" and wanted to build a musical around her and some friends.

The workshop with Ralph & Carter was the writing part of the show. More please!

  • @Sox575 I though it was Holiday who they found from "Your Arms Are Too Short"..... I thought they got the idea for Nell from Aint Misbehavin

  • @babyboi1002 LOL, you're probably right! I know someone was from "Arms Too Short..." I might have mixed the two up.

  • is it just me or the versions featuring LLB the band sounds awsome more authentic for the time period

  • I love LLB's version- the standout Deena among all of them because she doesn't follow the blueprint that SLR created. I wish they would cast more "colorful" Deena's like her in more productions.

  • @lf1234 they are more focused on casting a pretty girl(Beyonce) than a girl who can pull off the "diva" part of Deena

  • @babyboi1002 , oh, I think Beyonce could've pulled off "diva". It just wasn't in the script. I kinda wish she had been more of a diva and demanded more material and music and "diva" moments beyond just Listen.

  • @lf1234 Pop Princess? Yes . Diva? No

  • @babyboi1002 View cadillac records.....she can pull of varying degrees of diva...from demanding songstress to complete bitch

  • @ninetiesbaby10 Well,she was a horrible Deena

  • @babyboi1002 In your humble opinion

  • @ninetiesbaby10 and the critics would agree :)

  • @babyboi1002 Thats fine for them but I am entitled to my own opinion, an opinion on which you and "the critics" have no consequence

  • who is playing Deena in the 2nd Broadway Version?

  • Linda Lelahni Brown

  • And also, the tokyo version, are they actually playing lil black girls..LOL

  • from what I hear they are...

  • And one of the girls sound like an Patti Labelle immitation.

  • U KNOW this song came a lonnnnnng way. Cause the 1st one sounded as though it was strugglin

  • I liked the first one....lol

  • @babyboi1002 LLB is amazing!!

  • is there a korean cast recording?

  • yes

  • The Korean cast has great voices. Great inclusion there!!

  • I know peeps get tired of the Supremes comparison, but the lady at the apprx. 2 minute mark (Lalani?) sounds a lot like the early 60's Diana Ross.

  • That's Nell Carter.....

  • Do I hear Linda Leilani Brown's voice at 5:21???

I miss that voice! She was Deena in LA, so that's what I remember. I wish, I wish, I wish I could get copy of Opening Act II with her in it. I heard, sadly, that the new version replaced it with something else.

  • Yup....that's LLB!

  • LLB! I know that voice anywhere. Do you have any other material with LLB in it?

  • Just this entire performance...that's it

  • Do u have any other LLB STUFF?

  • @youndatmonkee working on it

  • I love this! Could you post all of Linda's song? I would love to hear every "drop" of it. BTW, thank you so much for posting this stuff, as it's just wonderful to hear everything. Do you work in the Broadway field?

  • I will...I'm working a collection of the most well known Deena's...Beyonce,Sheryl,and Linda

  • @mark91345 Linda is amazing!!!!

  • I really like "the mesh". I guess when the show was in the final stages they wanted it to sound like "Someday We'll Be Together" as much as possible. Who knows? Kudos for including the Korean version. I wonder how close the lyrics are to the English ones? There's always something lost in translation. I also wonder how they handled the racial aspect of the show, if it was translated to something totally different or if the Koreans understood all the Black and White strife in the USA's past?

  • I always thought it was across between "Someday..." and Diana's "It's My Turn"...

And I heard that the Korean actors were pretending to be black.

  • That's deep!
