AHHHH!!!! This could have been good, but damn it all.....this is why I'm going into the recording industry. To prevent happenings of this kind. And on the grammys as well. SMH
Please don't pull me into the arguement, but I would have to say I like brecker more. Sorry. Don't trample on his grave, anybody. you can say what you want about David Sanborn, I personally don't believe he really compares to people like Coltrane or Brecker. However, you can't say he isn't good enough to make money. He makes a lot of money, but that doesn't necessarily mean he has a lot of talent-Justin Bieber's a good example of that.
@jazztom86 yeah your right, I got pulled into that cliche. What I'm trying to say is, he's good in his own right, just I don't thhink of him on the same level as i think of Coltrane. But you're right-there's no comparison between Dave Sandborn and any modern pop musician.
@KMmusicman and what I want to say it's that it's not about who YOU like that makes his level. David Sanborn is without doubts technically an amazing saxophone player, and I see no reason to compare him to anyone. I like Brecker more too, but I don't think that Sanborn is not on his level. He just chase another way. If you like it or not it's your business. Man, also Pat Metheny makes a lot of money with his group, and they essentially play instrumental pop. Doesn't mean he's a bad guitarist.
David sounds great in a rock band (i.e. David Bowie), but noone would mistake him for a technical monster like Brecker, or an improvisational master. He is solid as what he does, and whilst you would never know it from the aformentioned horrible mixing job, this is a pretty solid performance from all concerned.
These are the days when they allowed TRUE, REAL, and solidly talented musicians to be a part of award ceremonies. Now all you hear is a bunch of wanabe crap!! And whomever was running sound that night should have been taken out back and beaten!
@keyguy13 I do agree that Miles was definitely a pioneer. I guess I meant Miles was not as technically virtuosic, compared to people like Dizzy or Bird. Miles is definitely every bit as important and visionary as the rest :)
I'd say Sanborn definitely has chops, just not the same type of chops as Brecker.
Just because Sanborn doesn't play in the same style doesn't make him any less of a musician, nor does it make his statement any less important. Hell, look at the difference between Miles and Gillespie/Coltrane. Miles couldn't even begin to come close to their level of virtuosity, but he's still considered one of the greatest players who ever lived...
That's because of what he was saying, not how he was saying it.
@ronthejazzcat Well said and while I agree with most of what you say, Miles was every bit the virtuoso as gillespie and coltrane. He was a pioneer just like they were.
Those of you putting down sanborn are probably 10 years old. Do you think Brecker would ever play with someone out of his league? He may not be as technically proficient as brecker but he has had many creative moments and DOES play brilliantly all the time. Don't be stupid. You see him playing with brecker, you make yourself look like a total idiot to claim he sucks. If you don't like his style, fine. But don't be a moron.
@musicmanson You dumb ass :) That's what you do when soloing. You build on the previous solo and add your own sound. You obviously know nothing about jazz and have never performed any. And no he didn't fail at all. You're never going to 'convince' me or anyone else that david sanborn sucks so stop trying.
@keyguy13 Hey man. A gig is a gig. Considering your sorry ass doesn't get any gigs outside of happy hour at the Doubletree, you wouldn't know what that's like. I am sorry that you have no taste and understanding of what a true saxophonist who has spent lots of time shedding and developing his vocabulary is versus one who just got rich off of playing really high and fast bullshit.
@musicmanson What are you talking about? You have no idea who I am and are making stupid assumptions which just once again proves that you're being closed minded. I've played many gigs both professionally and as an amateur. And again, my status as a musician has nothing to do with whether I think Sanborn sucks or not. I like his playing and I find him a brilliant example of a true professional Sax player. Nothing you say is going to change that. Nothing. Why can't you get it?
@keyguy13 Are you fucking kidding me?!?!? Sanborn can't do a quarter of the stuff that Brecker did. Brecker was a saxophone genius and Sanborn is only mediocre.
@musicmanson Everything he plays is intelligent. His solos build tension beautifully, he plays great melodies over the changes. You're probably one of those 'intellectuals' who thinks that unless you're playing dissidence and running modal scales over every change, that you suck. Hate to break it to you bro, but that doesn't prove anything. And it's totally cliche. It's all about taste. Sanborn plays tastefully and intelligently. Just not according to YOU. Luckily we don't have to agree with you
@keyguy13 False. I am not. He just sounds terrible and KeyGuy1.3, I don't see any videos of you playing, so I have no reason to believe that you have any credibility as a musician. So hop off of my nuts.
@musicmanson Your opinion is your opinion, you have a right to it. Some of us just disagree with you, ok? Stop trying to tell us "the truth" about david sanborn. You're getting nowhere. I don't have to show a shred of credibility to express my opinion. I'm proud of you for having your own and thinking whatever you want to think about sanborn but again, you're never going to convince me your opinion is "right" and mine is "wrong" :) It's amusing to watch you try though...
I'm betting that musicmanson had absolutely no clue on what you said.
Why would a nonmusician have some knowledge on jazz, music theory, scales, and such.
The stupid one sounds like musicmanson here.
You don't need videos of your playing to have credibility as a musician.
It's like if you're criticizing sanborn, you have to at least be a better musician than he is, like Phil Woods said, "Why don't you try sounding like Charlie Parker?" to a couple of guys like this fool
@chuns00 P.S. I checked out your classical saxophone videos. That's cute. I just wanna make sure that you're aware that there is very little work out there for classical saxophone. I mean, there is little work for musicians to begin with, but classical saxophone is pointless, considering their uselessness in orchestras and limited uses in concert bands. All I have to say is good luck if you plan on taking this seriously. And of course you need videos to prove yourself credible. Why wouldn't you?
@musicmanson My videos? That's because I don't upload public videos anymore if you haven't noticed.
When does referring to the saxophone as a sax make me sound bad? I'm not the only one referring to it as a name is rather trivial. I still haven't said that I wanted to make it in classical sax, you don't know shit about me, so assuming is rather stupid from a stranger like you. When was saxophone limited to only jazz anyway? It doesn't seem like you know what you're talking about here.
@chuns00 Look at the work opportunities for classical saxophone. Especially in the performance department. Then answer your own question and tell me what you found.
@musicmanson You really don't get it, its not about the work opportunities, since when was being a musician about making money only? Work opportunities don't determine the music saxophones can play. You really are stupid.
@chuns00 I mean, if you want to take this seriously, then it's about the work opportunities. But you just kind of wrote yourself off as a serious musician there, so I am done talking to you, you hack.
@musicmanson Lol, being a musician sets the music a priority first, then work opportunities come second, idiot, don't even reply because you sound even worse every time.
@chuns00 That's the mentality of a musician who doesn't wanna work. You obviously haven't learned that it's not as much what you know as it is who you know. As seen with this video. (Why do you think David Sanborn gets work? Not because he's shedding, but because he knew people who hooked him up with Miles) And why are you calling me all kinds of names? Like, I only called you a hack because you deserved it. You're just calling me an idiot and stupid because I know how to get work and you don't.
@chuns00 I've been playing sax for over 40 years and I can tell you, sometimes the way you play attracts a certain type of gig but most of the time, producers assume you can play whatever they heard recently and ask you to play a certain way with a certain style and that usually leads to a string of road gigs where you are now stuck reproducing whatever nonsense you did in the session. So, in short, work opportunities can determine what you music you are required to play and we all need money.
@chuns00 I know :) this idiot has missed the whole point of being a musician. It's about self expression. Some people like what sanborn has to say with his music. Considering music as self expression, I would probably laugh really hard at the angry and bitter crap that musicmanson spews out of his horn. I think his nickname says it all :)
@keyguy13 Angry and bitter crap? You haven't heard me play. Go check out my stuff. I am not gonna say that I am the best musician in the world, and some of these videos are older, but I have stuff on here that is better than what you call "angry and bitter crap".
@musicmanson I'm not interested in hearing you play. Your attitude and what you have to say on these posts says all I need to know about you. Maybe when you relax and stop judging everything and start appreciating different views and styles, I might want to hear what you have to say musically. Until then you just come across as arrogant, angry and bitter. I'm open to listening to you differently, though...
@keyguy13 I am not gonna take you or any opinion of yours seriously if you can't fulfill your duty, claiming to be a musician. I mean, for all I know, you could just be a fan who knows a couple of things. To that I say congrats and thanks for proving that you don't know what you're talking about. I mean, I have lots of opinions on things that I am not fully educated about. Yes I will express them, but I won't expect anyone to take me seriously. So don't get your feelings hurt when I say the same
@musicmanson LOL. A dumb ass like you could never hurt my feelings. And again, you're not going to convince me of anything so why do you keep trying? What did you think was going to happen when you insulted me and called me stupid for liking David Sanborn? Did you think I was just going to all of a sudden think 'Wow, that musicmanson is right, David Sanborn sucks and I shouldn't listen to him any more.' Get over yourself, ok?
Sanborn's mic is the one that needs to be turned down... With his smooth jazz sounding douchebagness. You turned down all of the good people... And what the hell is with Brecker's beard? And why is Foley wearing a bathrobe?
@musicmanson chill dude, dont hate, music takes on many forms and itd be stupid to just say oh he plays like a douche. all the guys up there are brilliant, just in different ways.
