I've watched every single one of these. I'm fat and it didn't help me with losing it :l they don't do shit to lose it. I want to know what a normal Skinny person eats in their day. Like what did these test subject people eat before they started the test?
@Kenny1614 I would weigh about the same as these guys did, my general day consists of a bowl of cereal (usually rolled oats + sultana's+yoghurt) for breakfast. Lunch is 2 bits of fruit, a muffin and a scone and Dinner can be as little as a can of tuna and some salad. I also have a protien shake a day to maintain muscle.
Thats it, no snacks at all during the day, i cant remember the last time i felt hungry. My body knows when it will get food and doesnt complain.
i eat alot and i cxan't gain any weight. i wish i could. i went to jail recently and they fed us at least 5000 calories a day, i prolly only gain a couple of pounds.
People, you don't realy have to cut your calories so that you could lose weight.
Just find an exercise that you would do regularly, and your body will be much better lookin'. You probably don't even have to lose weight to look good, just do some exercising and you'll look great! And remember.. as much as you eat, do as much as exercises!
People have to eat right and workout daily. To all you obese, fat, and lazy people who try to make every excuse why they can't lose weight; get off your fat ass and stop complaining!!
That was great, so glad I am a naturally skinny guy. I have been lifting weight s for eight months and it is so easy for me to gain muscle because I eat so much.
no wonder i cant lose much weight regardless of how much exercise i get... im 5'0, 120lbs and no matter how much i cut down on calorie intake and increase exercise rigor... i stay at about the same weight. it also goes for when i overeat and dont exercise.. stay at about 120lbs
This documentary was fun to watch, it explains what I suspected... my brother was picking at me for being overweight, assuming it must be easy to lose it. I made a deal with him that I'd lose 40 pounds if he'd gain 40 pounds (he's 5'11" 135 pounds and I started at 5'7" 200 pounds female btw) whoever gets there first and fittest wins. Haha I knew he couldn't do it, and this proves it! He's barely gained 2 pounds and I've lost 20 pounds so far. I've decided to lose 40 more and pick on him now :P
Fat people, shut the fuck up and listen; this documentary got one thing right. Your body has a determined weight that it tries to maintain - this is the perfect weight for your metabolism and other bodily functions. THIS DOES NOT FUCKING MEAN YOU WILL ALWAYS BE FAT. I mean what the fuck? I weigh 90kg (180 pounds) and 18 months ago it was made up of fat and bone. BUT GUESS WHAT? I STAYED 90KG, BUT I TURNED MY FAT TO MUSCLE. YES! THE GYM STILL WORKS. TRY IT SOMETIME. SQUATZ 'N' OATZ.
@Insubordinate90 reducing fat and building muscle are 2 separate physiological processes, be careful not to suggest muscle can be turned into fat. You can no more turn muscle into fat than you can turn lead into gold.
@Insubordinate90 I feel your comment needed clarification because you did appear to suggest that, and even if you do know better i know that many people who don't know better will have been mislead into thinking you are supporting a well established myth
"Losing a large amount of body fat will be difficult to maintain but losing a small amount will be easier to maintain" I don't have my doctorates degree but this idea tells me, the key is to lose small amounts of weight consecutively to reach your ideal weight without feeling starved. This process of course will be time consuming but none the less worthwhile.
@MackenzieMoyer I'd say that the reason there are so many obese people isn't because of a "sudden" change in genetics but rather because a "sudden" change in the amount of physical activity and the sheer amount of shitty food there is with very easy access. Many of today's obese people wouldn't get a chance to be obese let's say 60 years ago because many would have jobs that required more physical labour and most wouldn't have a television to sit in front of every hour of the day.
@MrOnBicycle I so agree with you on this. Kids in the old days went out to play and worked off those calories. Now they stay inside on their gaming systems and computer. Adults too. So it's no wonder we are all getting fat.
I have always been thin. I also forget to eat. I have to be reminded. I am muscular however. Ppl think I exercise a lot...how about never. I will say tho, when I force myself to eat and eat a lot, I will actually be hungry after that. It seems that your my body reacts by however I eat. If I don't eat I won't get hungry and will only want a little bit. If I eat a lot then I will crave a lot. Maybe other ppl are like that? I am really picky too. I only like fruit and meat and coffee.
@MsHolmar - I'm not "picky" but I am the same way. When I gained about 50 pounds I ate alot but after having lost most of it, I don't really feel hungry. I only eat enough to keep my body going, which is much more comfortable than having to eat all the time to maintain a fat body.
My personal experience with weight loss, and strictly controlling my calorie intake was slightly different than the experiment they noted.
Eating at reduced calories had me feeling hungry, but that honestly went away after a couple of weeks. Then it was like my body shifted, and if I ate in excess I was feeling overly full and sickly.
I must have a completely different body type though. I lose weight super fast, but I gain it super fast too.
@larauc The experiment is based on the period when the participants were being fed enough calories to maintain the body weight they had reached after their starvation period, and this is how the conclusion was reached.
Very interesting study, but it does not explain why obesity is such a problem today compared to the 1950s, 60s and even 70s. One would have to look to changes in diet, the efffects of advertising, the effects of suburban life, etc. as well. Otherwise people then and now should not be any different but they clearly are. Also people in the US are more obese than Europeans but not genetically different so other factors are at work too.
that really hurt my self esteem. I guess ill just curl up on the sofa watching tv and... gag on chocolate ice cream and cake and not gain anything . Why ?! why can't i get fat ?!
@yuzu833 this experiment is interesting, but it failed to take a look at exercise. perhaps there should be a study involving overweight people increasing their exercise level and seeing if their appetite increases as well or if they lose weight.
This program was incredibly unscientific. The conclusions may be correct because they are well reasoned, but the experiment does nothing to prove them and was just for show.
I wish more than anything that i had a metabolism like most of the people in the world that lets them gain weight and have to exercise and watch their diets to stay healthy.
I eat a whole crapload and drink only whole milk and im still underweight and i hate it! i HATE eating whatever i want, whenever i want and not gaining anything cause i really wanna work out and get some muscle.
@wadoryu2u oh shut up..be in the place of a person who must eat fruit and vegetables and chicken meat and NOTHING else to not look fat...it's so easy for you to eat anything..
@havan1 - ya but im thin and underweight and really wanna get more muscle and stuff and thats alot easier if you have extra weight to turn that into muscle.
@wadoryu2u You're an idiot, fat doesn't turn into muscle, you're better off because your metabolism will be faster, stop whinging your way out of training and eating enough.
agreed with the other guy, proteins and lipids (fats) are 2 completely different things. the best thing for you is to lift as heavy as you can, and intensley as you can. eat plenty of lean meats complex carbs and dietary fats, fruit etc. and you will put muscle on. initially it will be quite quick, but then you'll plateau. btw, you and alot of people eat less than you think.. start counting to make sure you eat enough
@MerulaMondlicht I agree, but most of this filth is supposed to be cut out by peer review - which obviously the BBC have avoided by giving these people a platform. People are so set in their ways that this is all going texas sharpshooter
You may be inclined towards a predestined weight, but as the fat man earlier in the video showed by fasting for a year he could lose a lot anyway. Besides, saying that if you lose weight you start getting hungrier is actually the opposite of what happens; if you go three days without food you will actually stop being hungry all together. The belly is the size of the food you consume, if you always eat small amounts it will pull together and you wont have the same sensation of hunger.
@viciouslefsa ..AND he'll only continue to be thin if he keeps fasting or near-fasting all his life cuz for his body this low weight is abnormal that was the point they were trying to make!
I can put on 10 pounds in one week if I eat pizza for dinner every day. It takes one month to lose it. No one thinks I look much different, plus or minus 10 to 15 pounds, I'm the only one who does.
The remarkable thing about these comments is how the thin people can watch this and still come away with this idea that they are thin because of their perfect self control and overall moral superiority. It's like they didn't watch the same movie.
@jakeharvey Yep! Skinny people think they are skinny because they are smarter and more disciplined. They think fat people are fat because they are dumb and lazy. In other words they are delusional! I know numerous slim people that have horrific diets and never exercise yet they still believe they are somehow better and more deserving then anyone that is overweight. God blessed them with a high metabolism and a high level of arrogance to go along with it!
@mrekbass gosh that is so true. and I feel terribly frustrated when I see people eating shit and staying size zero:[ then they start jabbering about healthy eating and sports, I could just punch them lol
@hydrOstem Agreed; even if a person is more likely to be heavy from a genetic standpoint they can still control their macronutrient intake and exercise such that they maintain a healthy body composition.
@LiftingForLife They're not going to stick with the needed changes to make that happen, especially not when their body is counteracting what they do every step of the way. The people in this video didn't need ANY willpower to lose the weight after the experiment ended.
Looks like somebody didn't watch the documentary. Mind you, I'm not saying ALL fat people are fat due to predisposition, but it's just as foolish and absurd to say that they're all fat due to laziness and bad habits.
@hydrOstem I'm afraid that the medical profession, those people that are experts on the subject disagree with you. You really should do some research and stop blindly following the messages that you receive via mass advertising!
Believing everything you are told by advertisers makes you a consumer, not an expert on issues relating to the biological sciences!
@mrekbass I'm afraid they don't, merely a few studies in this video do. There are certain genetic limitations and certain disorders that would make this difficult but every obese person who needs an excuse to stay obese, that watches this video is now going to tell themselves that they can't lose the weight when in reality they can and only a few can not. As far as trying to pin me as an expert on biological sciences, don't worry about me. I'm far more educated than you are.
@hydrOstem "I'm afraid they don't, merely a few studies in this video do"
You need to do more than watch a few youtube videos to understand a given issue!
and... I have two degrees with honors and teach lazy little fucks like you for a living! You're a 26 year old guitar player and you think your smarter than me!? Arrogant little half-wit! Pull your head out of youtube and then pull it out of your ass and research for the next ten years and you might get close to being as smart as me!
@hydrOstem@mrekbass Lol, reading your about me tells me everything I need to know about your intelligence levels and education. You're probably a fat lazy bastard who blames everything but himself for not losing the weight and I am smarter than actually stopped being fat by changing my lifestyle. I'm also an Engineer with a minor in Physics. Have fun trying to prove that you're more educated.
It's not all plain and simple, but those two attributes are certainly very important factors. I've been on both sides of the thin-fat continuum and am currently on the latter side, so I'd like to think that I'm not biased. Sure, not everyone can be stick-thin (and why would you want to be anyway?), but in order to maintain a healthy weight, assuming that is your goal, you have to have healthy mind.
This is probably the most intelligent comment I've read while watching this video. Note that this kind of thinking applies to virtually everything in life.
All these young men and women are what, in their 20's?
I was a beanpole until I hit 25 or so. Now at 33, I'm finding it harder to keep the fat off. Most people I know have had similar experiences.
These kind of experiences throw a wrench right into the "genetic disposition" theory unless there's something more to it. How can I be genetically predisposed to be both skinny and fat?
@P1NN4CL3 ""I was a beanpole until I hit 25 or so. Now at 33, I'm finding it harder to keep the fat off. Most people I know have had similar experiences.""
""How can I be genetically predisposed to be both skinny and fat?""
You are not!
It's commonly known that as we age our metabolism slows, making it easier to gain weight and more difficult to take it off. Everyone experiences this change in metabolism and it is not a result of changing genetics it is a result of aging!
"A successfully weight reduced obese individual is going to have to live with a more or less constant sensation of hunger if they intend to be able to maintain that reduced body weight indefinitely"
But the experiment he's basing this comment on involved starving the participants them in order to get to that reduced body weight. Surely it's just common sense that their appetite will be haywire; it doesn't mean they are naturally obese.
@larauc your wrong, when you finish a diet and start eating the right amount to mantain your new weight u would feel constantly hungry.i've been on diets many times and lost and regained a lot of weight.it's like there is something that gets imprinted in our cells that tells the body to go back to our old weight.or maybe it's because we actually don't lose the fat cells, they get smaller but they are still there.maybe they are the ones that make us want to eat more
i would be interested to see where instead of starving the participants they created a moderate calorie deficit of about 500 calories and maybe made them walk for an hour a day. Would their appetite still be haywire? THATS THE REAL QUESTION
@larauc There's a hormone called leptin in the body which regulates your hunger, and your metabolism (how fast you burn up energy).
So, the more leptin you have, the less hungry you are, and the higher your metabolism. When you lose fat, you lose leptin production (as it lives in fat cells), so you become more hungry, and your metabolism slows. That's what he's talking about; as when people lose weight, they become hungry and their metabolism slows. Your body is designed to stay at one weight.
@larauc They were starved at first, but then put on a diet that met their energy needs, but the chemicals in their brains reacted the same way as a starving person who doesn't eat enough would react.
Normal person: 2,500 calories a day down to 1,000, the brain thinks we're starving.
Obese person: 5,000 calories a day down to 2,000, the brain reacts the same way.
Some ppl are just used to eating more food more often, so they're body takes that as the norm, regardless of our health.
i definitely get the theory and believe it, but something like this should not be used to justify how fat more and more people are getting.and it should be a warning considering how little children are planted in front of and more or less raised by television in today's society. and now with computers it's just going to get worse. also, women - bigger women - are having children at an older and older age.
To answer the question that most of you seem to be asking: There are a lot of fat Americans because junk food is virtually everywhere and is a LOT cheaper than healthy food. This is especially true if someone lives in a low-income area. Plus, the culture doesn't place a lot of emphasis on eating healthy. Americans are bombarded with diet plans, diet pills, and "fat-burning workouts" every single day, but none of them address the the problem of habitual overeating.
For all the overweight people who've watched this: Read Gary Taubes books, "Why We Get Fat". (better yet, look up vids w/ him here on YT) Or "Good Calories, Bad Calories"(it is a more dense read). And you will see that you CAN lose weight and your body isn't 'destined' to be/stay fat, as this doc. makes it seem. You are NOT doomed! Taubes is excellent and thorough in explaining the science behind weight gain. And obviously how to lose it.
this misses the whole solution entirely. stupid twats. clearly they should be stating that the solution should be medical - hunger-inhibiting drugs or whatever.
No addressing quality of food here, which is too bad. I'd be interested to see what would happen if this was repeated with organic, whole foods, rather than junk.
Actually cutting calories by diet or doing a lot of exercise is doing the same thing: Creating a caloric deficit. It's best to restrict your calories, by eating plenty of fresh fruits and veggies and a little bit of lean meat and avoiding sugar and refined carbs, AND exercising.
b-ing THIN stinks. We end up with the low paying jobs. Women want look at u. And u r treated like dirt. I SAY BE FAT AND MERRY. U FAT GUYS have better sex. Then us slim dudes.
The fed them unnaturally high levels of processed food, then they went home and probably back onto a more healthy diet and they say that they quickly went back to their weight.... well thats common sense, not really suprising, hardly worth stating!!!
I agree sharpy. I was a chubby kid. I lost 70 pounds 15 years ago at age 24. If I overeat, I will put on weight. If I don't, I won't. We aren't powerless. I think the most interesting idea this documentary introduced was the biological impulses of some to overeat. The group does not overeat, and therefore are not overweight.
I wish the experiment included somebody on the "heavy side" like me: not obese, but with a certain body structure: large shoulders and more muscle mass, for example. I have always been the envy of all my friends at the gym for my ability of building muscle... but I always struggle when I need to dry out a bit and loose a few kilos.

MsHolmar 6 months ago

I lose weight super fast, but I gain it super fast too.
paulsballsify 6 months ago
@larauc The experiment is based on the period when the participants were being fed enough calories to maintain the body weight they had reached after their starvation period, and this is how the conclusion was reached.

Very interesting study, but it does not explain why obesity is such a problem today compared to the 1950s, 60s and even 70s. One would have to look to changes in diet, the efffects of advertising, the effects of suburban life, etc. as well. Otherwise people then and now should not be any different but they clearly are. Also people in the US are more obese than Europeans but not genetically different so other factors are at work too.

agreed with the other guy, proteins and lipids (fats) are 2 completely different things. the best thing for you is to lift as heavy as you can, and intensley as you can. eat plenty of lean meats complex carbs and dietary fats, fruit etc. and you will put muscle on. initially it will be quite quick, but then you'll plateau. btw, you and alot of people eat less than you think.. start counting to make sure you eat enough

@jakeharvey Yep! Skinny people think they are skinny because they are smarter and more disciplined. They think fat people are fat because they are dumb and lazy. In other words they are delusional! God blessed them with a high metabolism and a high level of arrogance to go along with it!

@hydrOstem I'm afraid that the medical profession, those people that are experts on the subject disagree with you. You really should do some research and stop blindly following the messages that you receive via mass advertising!

mrekbass 4 months ago
@mrekbass I'm afraid they don't, merely a few studies in this video do. There are certain genetic limitations and certain disorders that would make this difficult but every obese person who needs an excuse to stay obese, that watches this video is now going to tell themselves that they can't lose the weight when in reality they can and only a few can not. As far as trying to pin me as an expert on biological sciences, don't worry about me. I'm far more educated than you are.

hydrOstem 3 months ago
@jakeharvey

P1NN4CL3 9 months ago
@P1NN4CL3 How you age is partially determined by genetics.

""How can I be genetically predisposed to be both skinny and fat?""
You are not!
It's commonly known that as we age our metabolism slows, making it easier to gain weight and more difficult to take it off. Everyone experiences this change in metabolism and it is not a result of changing genetics it is a result of aging!
mrekbass 8 months ago
"A successfully weight reduced obese individual is going to have to live with a more or less constant sensation of hunger if they intend to be able to maintain that reduced body weight indefinitely"
But the experiment he's basing this comment on involved starving the participants them in order to get to that reduced body weight. Surely it's just common sense that their appetite will be haywire; it doesn't mean they are naturally obese.
larauc 9 months ago 41
@larauc your wrong, when you finish a diet and start eating the right amount to mantain your new weight u would feel constantly hungry.i've been on diets many times and lost and regained a lot of weight.it's like there is something that gets imprinted in our cells that tells the body to go back to our old weight.or maybe it's because we actually don't lose the fat cells, they get smaller but they are still there.maybe they are the ones that make us want to eat more
geiuy 9 months ago
i would be interested to see where instead of starving the participants they created a moderate calorie deficit of about 500 calories and maybe made them walk for an hour a day. Would their appetite still be haywire? THATS THE REAL QUESTION
TheKarinau 8 months ago
@larauc There's a hormone called leptin in the body which regulates your hunger, and your metabolism (how fast you burn up energy).
So, the more leptin you have, the less hungry you are, and the higher your metabolism. When you lose fat, you lose leptin production (as it lives in fat cells), so you become more hungry, and your metabolism slows. That's what he's talking about; as when people lose weight, they become hungry and their metabolism slows. Your body is designed to stay at one weight.
toffeeapple7 8 months ago 2
@larauc Hmm well, starved them down from a weight at which they didn't feel like they were starving.
lolPantsProductions 8 months ago
@larauc They were starved at first, but then put on a diet that met their energy needs, but the chemicals in their brains reacted the same way as a starving person who doesn't eat enough would react.
Normal person: 2,500 calories a day down to 1,000, the brain thinks we're starving.
Obese person: 5,000 calories a day down to 2,000, the brain reacts the same way.
Some ppl are just used to eating more food more often, so they're body takes that as the norm, regardless of our health.
