  • you brought up some great points here!

  • Bordom, doing the same things. Not acomplishing anything like office work. Compared to someone building, and creating something.

  • Hey great video. Have you ever studied Marshall Rosenbergs Nonviolent compassionate communication? It gives a language and useable model to the feelings and needs you talk about and it is excellent. I'd love to see a video on nonviolent communication. Thank you

  • Depression is a Multi faceted disorder. Maslow left us much to use but his writings were not intended to be used to confine a single definition to any mental disorder especially depression. Using Mallows hierarchy has not that much to do with depression.

  • The word depression attempts to sum up too much. There is a broad spectrum of depression, depression like happiness is a normal part of our lives. Depression can lead to great personal growth. But serious depression, the kind that lasts, the kind that the mentally ill suffer with, the kind that can leads to suicidal thoughts. The kind of depression that has no reason and comes from nowhere, this depression is similar to the depression one feels when physically sick. This depression is physical.

  • None of this addresses the origin or nature of our "needs", except:

What if it can be shown that the totality of who we are as individuals is learned?

That every instinct, emotion, personality and belief about ourselves and the world around us...is learned!

What would it mean if each of us is nothing more than inchoate energy, animating a physical mass of blood and bones, and learning everything we’re to ever become?

    Frightening? - Quite the contrary!

  • your head is in the way

  • This is very good thanks i have depression ive also lost a lot of friends meaning i don't have much social life anymore as well as walking out of my last jobs Its definitely important to be part of a social group to give a more sense of drive and be around people which helps your self esteem and some goals to aim for .Thanks for this.

  • I enjoyed your video very much, I like all of your videos, your intelligent, funny and make clear concise points. I also find you strangely attractive lol.

  • Have you ever had depression?

  • At the moment im living around my parents who are very abusive at times just because I cant get a job. I know for a fact if I had somewhere else to go and that allowed me to surround myself with positive people with silmalar values and interestes i wouldnt be anywhere near as depressed.

Now its just a matter of figuring out how to leave!

  • By far the main factor in depression in my eyes is the environment your living in... Everything from a bad past experiences in the social community to living in unpleasant living conditions causes a person to feel depressed especially when growing up.

  • I agree that depression is greatly dependent on external forces; but I don't see why that discredits that depression caused by a genetic disorder is implausible. I think that some people are naturally much more easily set into a state of depression then others. doesn't that make it genetic? or a "disease"? In a society where someone with mental disorders can still contribute to the gene pool, I think it's plausible that diseases that cause chemical imbalances are able to be passed genetically.

  • I was diagnosed by my mother as shizophrenic due to an Aunty that has now been proven to be misdagnosed. I am now after 32 years of being medicated coming off the TOXIC POISONS they have nearly killed me with on 3 occassions....LOVE and having an INTIMATE Relationship is the HIGHEST of Maslows NEEDS!!!

  • everything we think, feel, and do is based on neurochemicals. everything is chemical. depression can have many origins, but clinical depression is absolutely based on chemicals, as are all of the psychiatric syndromes you hear about

  • I would get real depressed to the max, if you were to quit making these videos. Keep-em-coming Baby!

  • wrong choices one has made in the past can cause depression..especially if one keeps making the same wrong choices every day. Saying 'I quit smoking' and then having a smoke is an example if one chooses to quit every day but fails every day.

I'm bipolar. I didn't find out until 11 years ago. I didn't fit in any where; not even with family. Once being diagnosed with Bipolar disorder my whole life made sense. I now am happy at 59 years of age. I raised our two sons for over 11 years by myself.

  • I always wondered if the needs at the top of the pyramid can be met if a need at the bottom of the pyramid has not been. I'm thinking generally. Can any higher need be met when a need below it has not been met.

  • great video. thank you

  • You pin-pointed some of the symptoms that I have been dealing(dragging) with...Could this mean that I may be experiencing this 'mode'/emotion? : \ Very useful...thanks!

  • Very well done. i know about Depression. I have lived with for sometime now.

I believe that the first thing to getting out of a Depression is knowing. once you have figured out why then work on that reason. Depression causes hopelessness.

never give up hope. I do believe it is the way we think. words like Hate and can't control our mine. If try ( and it is hard) to block the two words from your mine you can over come this hopelessness.

  • Depression is caused by drugs doctors push

  • Depression is anger turned towards self.

  • nice editing at 10:16 ._. hah.

  • i liked very much, good helpful...but i like you better...beaultful

  • Just check out what Ryke Hamer has to say on causes of depressions. It is all related to conflicts at home/work.

  • This gets into the nature versus nurture debate. I would argue that depression has roots in both. Environmental circumstances (self-isolation, poor support system) can certainly influence depression, and can neurochemistry. To completely disregard the mind/body as a source of depression is simply juvenile and foolish.

  • @SDMFTrueBlue I think so too. I also think that people who try to describe depression, when they've never been truly depressed, fail. There is also a big difference between feeling a bit sorry for one-self and being truly depressed. The 2nd example in the video made more sense to me, most of the others are basically just blaming the depressed person for their condition.

  • @SDMFTrueBlue Great point. What I'm refuting is the idea that "mental illness" is caused by a "chemical imabalance in the brain." The chemical imbalanace theory has never been proven by science.

Certainly our physiology plays a role in our health, happiness, etc. I'm not denying the mind-body connection in any way, I have dozens of videos about health because our physical body DOES affect our mind. But depression is not solely caused by a defect in the brain, as psychiatry tells us.

  • Do they sell roofs for only one shoulder ?

    .....I think that's a Micheal Jackson jacket.

  • this was a great video, thank u so much it really helped me. Im 22 and iv dealt with depression, social anxiety and low self esteem since i was about 17. ive nonstop felt this way..But ive never been on pills or to see a doctor cause i want to deal with it myself. But i hate how people downplay what u have. My family does that sometimes-oh my depression is worse-im on pills, so u dont have it as bad as me. or my problems are worse..and make me feel bad for my own problems an i should get over it

  • The triathalon guy might be exhausting himself with TOO MUCH excercise. Emotional and Physical needs can sometimes get mixed up and he might need some rest.

  • "To create depression there has to be a sense of danger, threat or harm to one's self, and a sense of inability to solve it - of having one's hands tied.... If this sort of thing persists... with no improvement, depression sets in."

Sounds like my former marriage. It broke my heart, and nearly killed me. Now I'm free, and feel alive again!

  • @audadvnc I'm still pretty depressed myself. I was dumped by my ex of five years, was not in shape, feared I was going to die, don't have my documents( so everything is very hard for me), feel guilty about a lot of things, had trouble with the police, etc- and yes, I feel powerless to do anything about it. I know that if I could get my life on track, I would feel a lot better- but it's hard when the law sees you as inferior. My self esteem is pretty low, and that definitely does not help.

  • @audadvnc When I was in my teens I always had two or three girls that I talked to-getting chicks was not important or difficult for me. Now I have trouble talking to any woman. My energy levels are very low, and my depression makes me sleep two or three days at a time. Not to mention that my parents are pretty ignorant and aren't willing to help me with this condition- they think it's not a valid condition and just a mere excuse. Going on eight years of depression- with absolutely no help..

  • I like the idea of their being a Hierarchy of Needs. I also like Marshall Rosenbergs NVC model. The NVC model doesn't have a hierachy, it is simply about what certain needs people have at any given time, which is causing their feelings. Thank you.

  • When there is no love in your life, there is often no happiness.

And i would like to know how do you heal yourself from not being able to feel love!?

  • There are many causes for depression. We may have a good job, plenty of friends, a good bank balance, an active social life etc and still sufer from depression. Conversely people who are alone, lost their jobs, in a financial mess are still able to lead a happy life. I enjoyed this video.

  • she has nice smile and know her thing very well!!

  • Another thing when you have social difficulties things add up.People mob you & team up against you & try to attribute negative, untrue things to you, they relentlessly tease & taunt, & covertly instigate & terrorize you - they don't do it to people who can defend, or assert themselves they do it to more vulnerable people- they antagonize you till you're unsettled & a nervous wreck & have a breakdown & go into mental health & are accountable even though you are poked/prodded by people all along.

  • I'm male & there are a couple different tough guys that I run into in my regular activities that give me a hard time - they do it kind of sneakily & covertly & subtly just enough so that they make you feel intimdated or fear - like a nudge when nobody's looking - these couple of different guys are at a couple different stores that I go to & it bothers me makes feel depressed - I don't fight but I also wont put my head down and be obsequious to these bullies - I don't know what to do.

  • Thank you very much.valuable information.

  • Maslow's theory, wasnt built on research and therefore it has lots of critism. All he did was make a list. And plus to have self actualization you dont need to go through all those stages its untrue, and also lacks cultural perspective. because I know people who really dont leave in a safe area, or lived just on a certain amount of food. and they went far in life. so dont rely on Maslow's theory.

  • I have no one, I don't ever feel safe, and I have no passion. Why am I not depressed?

  • Learned Optimism?

  • At the time of this comment, 5 people are too depressed to listen to this video.

Tony Robbins said we're only happy and fulfilled when we feel like we're growing. Nothing in life feels as juicy as knowing you're expanding who you are.

I'm not one to argue with Robbins.

  • Depression IS something people can overcome.. It's just a matter of will power and desire.... My girlfriend broke up with me, i found out the child i had with her wasn't actually mine after 3 years and i broke my neck and back in a car accident all in the same year. And you want to know what I did to overcome my depression/sorrow... I indulged myself in what I loved to do the most in life!! Which was filming... If you go on my page, you can see some of the stuff i've filmed since 2008

  • Low chanting is helpful, the way we are forced to talk is unnatural- we're meant to holler & grunt & scream over broader distances. We now adopt a tone that is appropriate for communicating at close range like in offices or within 5 feet of each other- singing, vocal yoga,chanting,shouting-not with malice, but hearty vigorous scream/shouting to strengthen & release tension from the muscles we use to vocalize.I'd like to see vocal gyms & voice olympics -shout competitions, maybe measure decibels

  • I think the best way to get out of depression its to put your self into a situation where people will come to you in a positive way.

Be generous, give a present to your loved ones, help some people on the streets, create something that will bee appreciated by others. After you get the ball rolling your environment will actually cheer you up! instead of you just looking for something you like. Try it!

  • What's your answer to my very severe anxiety disorders, my dark and sometimes crazy thoughts and panic attacks ?

  • Whatever happened to the Psychetruth videos with the dumb bimbos reading stupid facts at the pace of a 3 year old??

    btw - that's a compliment...;)

  • Our mood is controlled by three things . 1 . Our body language , 2 . Language ( What we are thinking or saying ) . 3 . What our mind is focused on . Change one or all of these things in a positive way and depression is impossible . Thank you .

  • One of the most important concepts to point out is that you cannot control the past and you cannot directly control the future, from here in the present. The present is all we can control. We take action in the present to move toward our future goals, but we can only control the present. So, if you sit around obsessing over a negative past or afraid of a negative future you are wasting your energy and being miserable over something you cannot even control. Take action to meet your needs NOW.

  • I wanna beer and I wanna see sumthin neked

  • @Jimmybuz1 grab a bud, a microscope and pull down your pants!

  • Good job plugging email comments into Maslow's Hierarchy, I found this video valuable, but am concerned about the athlete who says he lays in bed for 40 hours trying to decide why he should not commit suicide. That is not normal and he is reaching out. The most valuable concept I have ever seen about depression and every emotion is Dr. Paul Dobranski's MindOS Book or video. He gives TOOLS to use, explains that anxiety comes from loss or lack of confidence that you can change your situation.

  • @StratMatt777 Dr. Paul's MindOS explains that you can have ANGER caused by hurts and that anger is a useful energy that you need to turn into assertiveness to get your needs met instead of feeling helpless. ANXIETY is from loss and lack of confidence (probably from a history of not being assertive) and should be actively turned into COURAGE, but if you are PASSIVE with anxiety it will distract you from your unmet needs with addictions to escape like TV, food, alcohol. Then you take no action!

  • I agree with everything you said. This is a great video. I am currently struggling to get a place at a university to study Psychology myself. How did you learn about this Moslow and is this the kind of stuff that Psychological Therapists learn?

  • This is so true. How come a doctor who bases his/her work on 'science' can say after a 10 minutes discussion with a patient that he is suffering from depression caused by chemical imbalance in the brain - where is the evidence!?

Good video and you're always so lovely. My sadness fades away listening to you *hugs*

  • Who is this girl? Is she an expert on depression?

  • @meeene4 Is anyone?

  • @JazzyJonas only me :)

  • It's not just enough to have goals - one has to have the confidence to be able to achieve those goals and has to feel like they're making meaningful progress towards them. Otherwise, that person will wind up casting aside those goals and get depressed.

  • I have depression, this is a nice video!

  • Those who matter don't mind, those who mind don't matter.

  • Don't torture animals.

  • @silentthriller She didn't. Someone emailed the information about the dog shocking experiment to her.

  • to an unnatural environment. The neurophysiological factors and external manifestations and situations are either correlates or products of the previously mentioned Interior 'pathological' foundation.

  • Having been a counselor and a functioning member of the general 'culture of psychology', I found that depression (and most neuroses) was founded in a persistent avoidance of the rigors of self-awareness which generates and self-perpetuating cycle of suppression-repression-projection whereby one's being becomes dependent upon outside factors for fulfillment of purpose and satisfaction. The culture generates and supports this cycle- anxiety and depression are often natural reactions...cont.

  • There is no way to accurately measure the levels of serotonin in a live subject. Psychiatrists blame neurochemical 'imbalances' for emotions that occur because people live in oppressive, hierarchical situations where they do not feel safe.

  • be in present, use your past to exp. to learn positive conclusion, use future to influence your present

  • i have an odd vue on what creates depression.. the way i see it is depression is your bodys way of telling you that you are doing something wrong or in a way that does not benefit you, so your body gives you a negative feeling to bring attention to a point that needs changing.. i could go on with that thought..

  • I have ideas floating in my head for therapy-Id like to see modern dance classes available (like yoga) at YMCA's for "Ordinary" people- the dancing that they do in Avant Garde productions- One thing I do is I'll watch silver Surfer cartoons- then Get on my Yoga mat, put Brahms Symphony 4 (1st movement) on & pretend the mat is my board and I'm the silver surfer surfing the cosmos doging asteroids- the motions that the comic character does are similar to some yoga poses like warrior pose.

  • You shouldn't worry about how this crowd feels about you...but human nature dictates you would feel something. You are hot, you are a knockout, luscious bod...you sound authoritative without being condescending. You sound kind of like a doctor or a teacher. You are interesting. It is a treat to encounter you.

  • I think this video is great, lots of good info. Plus, the lady presenting is very pleasant.

  • Thanks for the response.I like this space to talk about depression because its not easy to talk about with people- The problems are more complex than many people will admit. I don't go to therapy any more because the problems I experience seem beyond therapy.I don't like trying to talk about it with people because they can't understand, or they are dismissive & it is hard for me to articulate & I get frustrated trying to persuade them- The best therapy for me is creative exercise,expression-

  • when depressed..person needs more love, more sexual happy euphoric relations.

  • I'm happy when I'm doing a headstand, or jumping on a rebounder, or looking at the stars, or practicing the guitar and singing, jogging, punching the heavy punching bag, doing yoga or learning - like really creating new neurons in my brain by learning new things. For me it seems impossible because I have so much difficulty socially & you can't explain that to people because they get defensive & antagonistic & don't understand and just accuse you. Thanks for the response - I feel happy now : )

  • I went to Costcos today & got some almonds, vegetables but when I came out of there I was so depressed, drained. Some lady that I see there is usually rude to me & sends mean vibes my way.I really feel the hopelessness & worry -the only thing that helps me are exercise, yoga, self expression, learning, art, creative exercises-social aspects are very very difficult - When I say I get depression I mean I get crushing, painful, hopeless, emptiness beyond my ability to articulate. Peace to all people.

  • Me a gustado mucho , realmente está bien argumentado y presentado , aclara bastantes dudas .

  • So what are your thoughts on fibromyalga? Its thought to be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. I have it and they have recommended me to take anti depressenants which i will not take. I think they have some new one out now but i dont want to take it. The pain is so bad all over. Its so hard to move sometimes and i have a very demanding job. Its wears me out physically and mentally. Ignoring it is not an option. Its not in our heads and most of us just want to be "normal"

  • @tygress1 Hi, I had fibromyalgia for 9.5 years. It was like having on a 100lb cement suit lined with red hot knives sticking in me. I didn't sleep & took massive doses of meds just to kinda sleep. I finally gave in & took anti-depressants & they relieved about 25% of the pain. There is a neuro-chemical amplification of the pain with serotonin & noreprenephine imbalances (I guess, who knows). I used to feel this way about meds too & wanted to avoid them as much as possible. Pain is depressing!

  • The Pyramid is good but its only a foundation. I dont like my job but I need money, I dont like my friends but I have no one else. I feel very different from others but must restrain my views. I would like to have a relationship but women dont find me interesting. These things arent just as easy as choice makes them. In a culture where so much adherence and censoring of oneself is expected, the structure can really cut people off very harshly. Its about integration into the culture.

  • oh no "ranger danger"...:(

  • Maslow and his pyramid are great and everything but when you think something as benign as the USDA Food & Nutritional pyramid is in the last stages of getting a "restructuring" whose to say this archaic geometric representation of the complex human psyche (or a fraction thereof) couldn't benefit from a new approach entirely? I mean a pyramid for crying out loud...Thank you

  • We as beings have the purpose to create effects or create stuff. Depression is one of the emotional vibrations we can say. The more we're winning in our games of creating, the higher our emotional vibration is. The less we are winning, the lower our emotional vibration is. Depression is a sign that we've failed or are failing at one of our creations. It could be anything. A relationship we shared authorship in not going well. Our team losing. A show canceled-Anything!

  • Very Good! Thank you.

  • Nice video i learned about maslows needs a while back i should def impliment some of these ideas. My dreams are to live a simple, healthy live close to nature in a small rural community and grow food. The majority of my stress comes from society, poor diet and programming

  • Further to what I previously said - it's very difficult for a depressed person attain self-actualization when having sense of purpose means that life has to make some sort of sense, have true direction. In a cruel world very little actually makes sense. How, therefore can one find true purpose when one has little power to improve things? IMO it's much easier for selfish, single-minded ppl to reach the top of the hierarchy and that's not a good thing really.

  • I've been depressed for most of my life and in my experience trying to "beat it" is actually impossible since it is one of the fundamental negative aspects of the human condition, along with violence, bigotry, hate, cruelty, injustice, all forms of evil and suffering. Dealing with depression rather than defeating it is more realistic.

  • I love you . . its very rare to find some1 with brain and you are genius

  • Those that mind do not matter and those that matter do not mind...is the correct saying 8:42

  • Improve our mood with food... Sounds good!

  • This is so great! I am happy but sometimes i do feel sad. Like but then I pick the self actualazation and strive to do well like on the PSAT. And I turn to my friends and they always make me feel better. I was dealt a great deck of cards. I just want to help those who werent given that blessing. I'm a high schooler and I see so many people who are depressed. I always go talk to them. I just want them to know someone does love them so they can have self esteem. I sent this video to friends.

  • :)

  • @mzoltan14. Please reader all my comments. I posted on mobile and my notes were cut short.

  • spiritual and mental will appear as bodily, or material and vica versa. Liver cleansing can help on depression. Thinking healthy can cure your liver. Not to get angry can prevent depression and liver damage. It all works together.

  • she has some nice "Honkers"

  • @TheEpoxyExpert I'm sure she finds this comment very impressive, guys.

  • @TheEpoxyExpert what the hell it has to do with this subject :L: |

  • @wateryskipper boobs make you happy

  • Liver inbalance can be cured with herbal complexes, developed thousands of years ago. Th the bodily health will year as mental health. From the mental part, somebody can ruin his bodily health, by being depressed. We process overload in our system a "problems" and tend to judge ourselves so "bad". Simply, we just have to process certain happenings in our lives, as a coffee grinder goes through faster our slower different amount of coffee faster our slower, crafting more heat and even can brake

  • hmm. That is an interesting topic. What about antisocial people and psychopats? What are their needs wich control their learning processes? I hope you will do a video on that sometimes later.

will there be some preventive measure proposed as well? so that depression and other derogatory behaviour would be preveneted to manifest, rather then fixed later on? I think children have various interests in self actualization need. The interest you feed the most will be most likely in the center.

  • We have a spiritual, mental and bodily dimension and the three interacting with each other. Everything is rooted in spiritual, the final cause always lays there. Todays society and the so called medical science is Darwinist, evolutionist and materialistic judging spiritual as crazy so it its even here would be hard to introduce the wholeness of this, better if I just simply explain just the other two part, namely the mental and bodily part. Depression can come from a liver energy unbalance.

  • . belief system are how you are controlled like governments, religions, and laws . it is what you think about something real or not dose not matter that much .if you do not know how they work or been given some wrong information about governments, religions, and laws .turns it to a beliefs. we all know what a tree is that the true part . trees make 1,000,000 people sick by a unseen poison gas unseen it will kill you in 20 years, belief .hard to prove and a trussed source . brainwashing .

  • Again, great video. (can't remember what her name is) I agree with the diet and exercise, or lack thereof, could lead to depression. Please make more concerning this topic. P.S. I thought it was rather humorous that all of these intelligent people that were commenting had the goofiest screen names. XD

  • damn i am stuck at 1st stage of the pyramid

  • Good video

  • Wow, amazing video. I would take this into account on why I'm depressed. Great point brought up, I can relate to all of them.

  • hi lovely :-)

  • Hey B%^&ch move, trying to see the chart. Just kiddin.

  • (o) (o)

  • I think physiological responses to situations come first. Then our brain interprets those responses as either fear or excitement. With this idea, I've been able to consciously tell my brain how to interpret my body's response. My life has become a lot more exciting. Try it yourself. start small. You probably have anxiety talking to others. But other people are exciting. That is why your heart rate is increasing.

  • IMO, it would have been better to have all of the up-coming videos all in one video, especially for this topic. The "recent" video was uploaded 3 months ago. This is a topic that people can't wait for months at a time to hear answers.

  • @Anonymous1995 There is already one more video related to this already shot and editing. It will be uploaded in the next few days.

  • @Anonymous1995 this is a re post marketed as a new video?

  • Interesting points and insights, thx.

  • Diet can play a role in depression. The food you eat affect your health and mood. Having a poor diet is often over looked when treating depression it is the very first area that should be looked at when dealing with the blues or mild despression, if you are severly depressed or depressed for a long period seek medical help and consider counseling while changing you're diet. Avoid all refined foods, sugars, high fructose sugar, flour, sweets to help rebalance you bodies hormones, system and mood.

  • i've been marginally depressed. There's a nature to it. i think it helps if one has a sense of looking forward to pleasant times. Right now i'm a pretty big loser, but who knows; if i can help bring back heat capture technology or methodology, would then be more successful than i would otherwise want to be. It's been banned for some monopolistic controlling reasons. It would be good for Earth and Life on Earth. It's about maximized good usage..

  • I am going through a major depression in my life right now, and this video really helped me. I am looking forward to the next video.

  • Depression is ironically more common in the rich west than it is in the poorer country's. Poor countries in general score low on physiological and safety.

The west otoh is low on family bonds ( love ). In apes it has been observed that when you remove their current leader and provide prozac to another he will become the new group leader every single time. ( esteem ) Perhaps this a good argument for moving depression more up to the love, esteem and self-actualization level?

  • @msh1044 To comment on myself. I am currently working my way through an evolutionary psychology textbook. Not the most strong branch of psychology ( mostly because it's relatively young and still a bit speculative ) But it does reflect on the possible usefulness of things like depression. Considering how widespread depression is I would be surprised if depressive feelings ( in milder forms perhaps ) didn't serve any function at all. Natural selection is very harsh to useless things.
