It seems that BEING the change isn't so much the key as BEING SEEN changed. The reason I highlight this difference is that generally when I donate to projects/organizations/etc, I do it online and there's no visibility. Now I'm thinking that I should tweet about it or something - highlighting why they deserve a donation and the fact (or amount?) that I am. Does anyone know of any research related to the network effects of donating (other than the generosity thing in the presentation)?
@creamygoodness If your friends are fat, it probably means that they have poor eating habits and they will influence you. It doesn't mean that you can't just eat a salad while they have a super-dupa-burger but it is harder to resist.
It's a bit like smoking. If you stop, either you get your friends to try and stop too or being surrounded by smokers will not help you stay smoke-free. Usually, former smokers have a hard time resisting when in a group.
The point of this presentation is not really "why" fat people cluster in the map. But rather, if you're a fat person with fat friends, find a diet, stick to it and it will influence your friends. If you get to a "normal" weight, your friends will too and their friends too. As they say: be the change you want to see in your social network.
This is fantastic. I'm a bit surprised he didn't touch on the difference between correlation and causality. People with fat friends are more likely to be fat but that doesn't mean that's why they're fat. More likely being fat is why their friends. People who are over-weight are less likely to point out extra pounds on others and so fat people are able to isolate themselves from frank criticism of their habits in these clusters.
This is a GREAT video which discusses self empowerment.

@merlin2600 but if you get skinny and your fat friends stay fat, will your fat friends eventually get you fat again?

This just in: Study declares that correlation really is causation! ....Or maybe people just make friends with people they have things in common with.

This was great. I have had this concept for quite some time. Kudos to James Fowler.
