Great track. There is noone like Jimmy.... I used to work for Chris in the late 80s and heard some amazing singing weekly in the shop and warehouse that he co-owned.
I found it!!! This is the blues song that was playing in my car's tape player earlier, whew! Now can you see why I went nutso for this? Awesome is too little a word for this. Who is singing though? I assumed it was Page & thought, gee he sings great, but then I saw some of his live videos from this album, and he don't even have a mic. So anyone know who did the vocals on this album? Now I can rest knowing I found THE song :-D
I was living in Dutch Harbor Alaska when this album came out, had been out there way too long as all we had for music was afrn radio network from what I remember, it was YEARS before I heard this song on a quality sound system, it still sends shivers up my spine when played at the right volume, considering that it's one of the most hard rocking songs ever recorded it's a wonder more people don't even know it exists, the first time people hear it you should see the look on their faces, priceless.
seen Pagey thrice. Clapton can be god, we need to invent a higher rank so we can promote Jimmy. he thought Jimi was the best, but the two of them have the stratosphere and the lespaulosphere all to themselves. Robin Trower is orbiting just beneath them. Eric and Jeff are self-limiting. fuck "sloppy," tight but loose is it.
Hate to disagree with you . Seen Page twice and is very sloppy. Gary more never sloppy. Always right on. I do play guitar. Don't get me wrong I would be happy to sound sloppy like Page. Moore has one and only the best sound . He plays with emotion and he can make the guitar sing. RIP Gary. I will miss you Tremendously !!!! .
@auther89 whoa whoa whoa, i need to inform you on some blues history, Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil to play guitar, but jimmy page...well damn, him and Lucifer are good friends and they jam on Wednesdays.
Strictly speaking, this isn't blues, however. This is too tightly arranged and "amped up" to be considered blues, really. I'd call it hard rock myself.
@gt5boy It's definitely blues, how do you think the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton & Zeppelin & so many bands got started? Playing blues--just like this or perhaps less as well--which was their 1st love. Haven't you ever heard Muddy Waters, BB King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Buddy Guy, Bonnie Rait, so many! They all have electric guitar blues. I like every form or blues except jazz, whether acoustic--the word for the kind of blues you mean--or not. Love claps & knock guitar percussion too.
@GuillotineRyder This is a straight up 12 bars blues tune. You can play it in any key. you just wont sound like Pagy. Nobody does no matter how much they try!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have no doubt about the Marshall used. I know others have used the LP/Marshall setup. Kosoff, Green, Clapton, Moore.
The key to this tone (other than the player/amp) I believe is in the mic setup. You can really here the cabinet (a huge key) in this song. The wood is just singing. I still stand by the fact that Outrider has some of the BEST recorded guitar tones ever. Due primarily to Jimmy's producing and mic technique.
no one better dare trash hendrix or page..... it just absolutely retarded. just appreciate the music and respect the people who devoted thier lives to making sick music
Yeah baby! This is one of my all time favorite Pagey tunes, with the most (I agree) BRUTAL, awesome, wicked and killer guitar tones of all recorded history. This is his Les Paul just crushing it! Must learn this beast top to bottom. What a sound! I remember when this video first came out on MTV back when MTV was a music show. Wish I could find their video for this. It was awesome!

@liontone Brutal IS the correct word matey! Page at his best could aggress/caress, hug and crush you all at once, and this piece is superb....i find it interesting that he of all the greats could keep true to the 'blues' thing and still develop his own style without erasing tradition - he is a grindingly blistering too...i started listening to him when i was 11 years old....amazing guitarist!
That's to Jim Marshalls credit (and the Fender amps he sideways copied) a lot more than Jimmy. I love Jimmy, but this is a straight up Marshall Superlead II tone anyone can get if they have these amp heads and a decent mike.

@Bundini3x No. They modernized old tunes and brought back that blues feeling. Only this was brought back in a huge chaotic sound. Jimmy Page sets the standard for all guitarists since. Him along with maybe 5 others at most. But, there shall be no others like him period. Why? He had his own style. And that style cannot be remastered. Bringing me back to my actual point: Jimmy added his own soul and feel and anger into the music he played, making him a blues player.
you nailed it bencantona the more you listen to page the more you get it, just like this song
nobody plays the Blues like that Page in a class by himself, he even nailed Country music last year with th Album of the year Plant did it but not without Page's input, post Zepplin work between Page and Plant with Allison Krouse on the Fiddle who woulda thought
@MichaelBallack91 No question that Hendrix was certainly great, revolutionary & innovative but he didn't really branch out of the blues genre. Page could do it all, any style of playing, including great acoustic work, & do it better than any one else. That puts Page at number one & Henrix 2nd.
@dokokai u must never heard jimi hendrix's blues album, and u should probaly listen 2 red house again (thats if you havent heard it already.) And during the time Hendrix came onto the scene, players like page, clapton and beck all admitted they stunned by hendrix. sayn hendrix didnt branch out of the blues no disrespect is not a very intelligent statement. and leave the comparisons alone page wouldnt put hinself in front of hendrix, and vice versa
@remm55 How can you say my statement isn't very intelligent when it is true that hendrix didn't do a lot of music outside of the blues genre? Whether it was psychedelic or harder edged, his music was mainly only blues based. Page certainly respected & admired hendrix's ability, but he wasn't in awe. The lesser players such as clapton & townsend were utterly blown away but page was already a seasoned, accomlished & experienced player by the time hendrix was becoming popular.
@dokokai One more thing~ someone once asked Page why he didn't ever use the whammy/tremolo bar on the guitar and his quote was ~ "What can I do with it that Jimi Hendrix hasn't already done? So I developed my own thing."
@remm55 Spelling correction~*accomplished*. I'm not comparing the two either. I'm making a statement that Page was the better more well rounded player, despite Hendrix's acrobatics on the guitar. Page certainly had his own as well. Here was a guy (Page) who dominated a decade littered with other great guitar players and outclassed them all.
@dokokai dominated the decade? really? so jimmy page outclassed, Frank Zappa, Robin trower, Frank Marino, Uli Jon Roth, David Gilmour, Jeff Beck, Brian May and Ritchie Blackmore? now if you said said Led Zepplin as a Band dominated the decade that would be fine..but to talk about strictly guitar playing and to say Page dominated and outclassed these guitar players, you're over exaggerating.
@remm55 Yes he dominated. Certainly as band Zeppelin did as well. Thanks in no small part to Page. True Zeppelin was as great due to all four members but they wouldn't have reached the heights of musical accomplishments with any one of the other guitarists you mentioned (as great as they are in their own right). But Page was just in another league by himself beyond the others.
@remm55 He is most recognized for his work in the 12 years Zeppelin was together, and although most of the others you mentioned (and a lot of the ones you didn't) continued to create music for years after Page stopped his prolific creativity, none of them have yet to accomplish the level of greatness he has. And I'm not one of those Zeppelin nuts whole only listens to them. I listen to lots of different guitarists & music in general.
@remm55 frank zappa, robin trower, uli jon roth, david gilmour, brian may sucks compared to jimmy. blackmore, beck, page, gallagher are the guitar gods!
@666Bison666 i agree with pretty much everything you said. but how could you not mention Hendrix? he was a crucial turning point in music and more so, guitar.
Page baby! one of the best concerts i've ever been to, the outrider album is just a taste of Jimmy page's finest work. Can't say enough about a great guitarist.
This is one of the most under-rated songs Jimmy Page ever did. The solo is up to Stairway, live stuff, anything he did on Presence. And he captured Jason's drum sounds so greatly, the old mic placement, organic way. I see JPJ doing Them Crooked Vultures and I think, why can't they get together with Ozzie or the dude from Soundgarden, it makes me so sad about "what could have been but never was".
Total bollocks. Pages playing on presence was superb, Just a totally different feel to what we were used too. Listen to it again. Pages live playing of the heroin era was poor, But I cant belive anyone thinks he was underpar on presence.
It's said that little Jimmy Page used to visit the Mississippi delta region to teach the locals how to play the blues. After hearing this song--you know it's true.;

I see JPJ doing Them Crooked Vultures and I think, why can't they get together with Ozzie or the dude from Soundgarden, it makes me so sad about "what could have been but never was".

Page was deep in heroin hell on Presence, it certainly wouldn't be hard to top his playing on that album.

im not a huge fan of the blues, but i still love it, but i like this song, because of pages' guitar

Total bollocks. Pages playing on presence was superb, Just a totally different feel to what we were used too. Listen to it again. Pages live playing of the heroin era was poor, But I cant belive anyone thinks he was underpar on presence.

@bencantona i agree... if you listen or try to learn presence stuff, its actually pretty hard...
like Achilles Last Stand is perhaps one of the greatest riffs and solos that Page has ever written.. in my opinion.

It's said that little Jimmy Page used to visit the Mississippi delta region to teach the locals how to play the blues. After hearing this song--you know it's true.;
