The guy who played Chairman Kaga is STILL alive....google him if you don't believe me. This was all played out for ratings I think. In fact...Shigekatsu Katsuda is his real name, and hes doing voice work for several video games, some of them being Final Fantasy's! The character (Kaga) was being killed off, not the real guy. Fret not my fellow Iron Chef fans.

@Podok86 This is true, and in fact the host of "Iron Chef America" plays a character as well - as the "nephew" of Kaga. That said, Kaga himself has never been on this version to keep continuity with the Japanese version.

These are not to be confused with the "Iron Chef" attempt a few years ago with William Shatner as the host - which was more of a cooking challenge and not really the same atmosphere.

The gentleman who portrayed "Chairman Kaga" wanted to return to his musical roots. He's Japan's version of Michael Crawford or Colm Wilkenson. He portrayed Jean Val Jean in the Japanese production of Les Miserables. They invented the nephew to keep the show running but I don't think people wanted to watch it without Kaga.

"Chairman Kaga" is a Japanese actor.

The "Chairman" in Iron Chef America is a Hollywood actor. He couldn't be Chairman Kaga's nephew since Kaga is Japanese, and the Iron Chef America Chairman is Filipino by descent.

The character died (not the actor). Iron Chef America (sucks) Is a separate story line in which chairman kaga's death was ignored. The "nephew" featured in Iron Chef America is not related to kaga

No - they just killed off Chairman Kaga the character. Apparently, Kaga Takeshi-san had some prior engagements and couldn't continue playing this character.

@SiKedek This is true - the real person is still quite alive and acting in Japan.

I do not blame him one bit to move on, as the series itself was winding down. He did an excellent job as Kaga, and I enjoyed watching his role in the series. This is nice how they're playing tribute and keeping it in character. Irony is though - they have done an American Version I think since then, and he appeared.

BTW, though he is never dubbed in the American versions - Kaga can speak some English.
