A sixth the weight of steel and 150 times it's tensile strength, about 1000 times more efficient than steel in a strength to weight comparison.
This may replace kevlar as anti-ballistic armor, or even be used as a hyper-strong anti-armor penetrating substance.
Imagine cutting tools that self-sharpen as they wear.
The Space Elevator could be used to string many ribbons into the sky for anchoring along the equator, then building horizontal structures in orbit between the verticle ribbons.
Daily planet did a better peice explaining Nanotube making. When they asked what purpose the material was for. They told Jay it was top secret. But It would make sence to use this for a space elevator. It's very strong and could be used to support such a project.
@Xalimdor The scotch tape that you see is carbon nanotube threads being spun off nanotube bundles. The guy said they were being extracted at 2" per second.
What's being demonstrated is the ability to mass produce nanotube "yarn", and the guy who posted this movie assumes that the yarn will be the material used to create a space elevator.
