We don't need to wear protective gear like taekwondo. How will you learn to defend yourself if you are padded up? Getting knocked out like that in sport karate is very rare. In fact at tournaments there are usually very few injuries. Sport karate is generally not supposed to be full contact but sometimes it happens like in any sport where people fight each other. With a helmet you get punched in the neck instead of the head cause there is no target to the head left.

I am sorry but if you wear a helmet and you are punched in the head or kicked, it is a sign to keep you hands up. And if you punch them in the neck you are just being mean and that person don't know how to block. Helmet or no helmet you should always practice with your hands up. Sport verse of taekwondo don't because they just focus on feet which gives all taekwondo a bad name because there are a lot of schools that will rock you with feet and hands.

Sport karate has too high an injury rate. It needs to wear protective gear similar to taekwondo, if it's going to be full contact like that. We can all smirk about getting knocked out, but doing that just once can lead to permament brain damage -- and no sport is worth that.

turns out it was fixed. Yes, she got clocked, but the fix was in, thats why you see her throw a punch after the hit, and her reach for the ground as she is going down. If you've ever been knocked out before then you know the ground comes before you can reach out for it. Her breathing is a give away as well.

In looking at the video further, I assume it was Masidina Haji Tengah from Brunei that was knocked out. It appears that she did win the bronze medal in that tourmament. It is a real treat to see a bronze medal winner knocked out as limp as a wet noodle. Did you see the way they were lifting her arms to try to wake her up, and how wide her legs were spread when she went down? Total loss of body and mind control . . .
