its only helpful,for old heat seeking missiles. For the newer variety using both electro optical and infrared seekers (Python 5, ) flares wont make any difference. For radar guided flares dont matter.this thing is good if ur primarily interested in protecting the aircraft from freak attacks by terrorists who carry in a few lucky cases stinger missiles (in Iraq). If i were a terrorist instead of bothering with a missile which is hard to obtain, i would rather go with a long range 50 calibre

Those are not fireworks, those flares are used when your aircraft is locked-on by hostile aircraft, it temporary disallows the aircraft being locked-on, but the angel at the end was funny (most possibly they specially launched them like that to make angel at the end),
