I wish people in America could be that patriotic, notice how when rule britannia came on everyone started singing along and there was thunderous applause, its a shame that in the U.S. there are a ton of people who don't actually give a shit about our country and refuse to sing the national anthem when it is played.
I love the British history, and the British people.... Most of the American historical songs came from our British cousins!!!!! All my love to you!!!!!
Wow - this one's got a bunch of you riled up. Just wondering what the two pieces preceding "Rule Brittania" might be - although I gather from comments that the first might be "Home Sweet Home." Best wishes, all.
@furball79 The only problem is that it's not easy to sing well. Being American, I know what it's like to hear your National Anthem be sung by someone who doesn't have the chops to pull it off.
Ha...! Come on, we Brits are more than able to cope with a few flames! We've been called arrogant forever... and don't care :) No doubt it must, indeed, be hard not to be able to join in with this, the most glorious anthem to the most glorious nation the world has ever seen (yes, still), sung by a crowd which actually has reason and right to be so patriotic. Long Live Her Majesty the Queen, and Rule Britannia indeed... as it still does, in so many ways. British and forever proud!! :)
Originally a poem by a Scottish poet in the late 1690's describing Britons victory over France and Spain in the technically first world war, Rule Britannia we shall never be slaves!
Thank you Britain for making Hong Kong the city it is today.I'm glad China and Britain fought on the same side in WW2 and that British troops never gave up on Hong Kong when the Japanese invaded.

Pride, culture, traditions and "stiff upper lip" character. What she once stood for and ruled can never be denied - although others like France would try to slate it! @JasperLee23 South Africa is a country that I particularly love - my wife and I went there on our honeymoon in the early 1990s. I had been there before, of course, and we have been back there many, many times since. It truly is a gem among nations, and you are lucky indeed to live there and call it home.
@VCVvideo This isnt the national anthem because there is precious little singing and a lot of instrumentals, meaning every time it is played you will need an orchestra... sort of restrictive...

@codecsubzero Britain will fall because Britain's patriotism has been eroded over the last 13 years. The patriotism that Britons naturally feel, that drives a country to bigger and better things, has been rooted out and destroyed from mainstream society and driven to final enclaves. Instead of celebrating our history we are taught to despise it, instead of celebrating our culture we are taught to put others ahead of ours. If we disagree we are called racists and bigots.
@codecsubzero Yet another sad comment from an immature American who at the age of 24 thinks he knows the answer to history! lol! I suggest you remove your sad comment! Keep your views on world history on your own country!
Hardly. The Mongols for example were FAR worse. And the Mongols left the world nothing. Whereas "Britannia" created the Industrial Revolution and the beginnings of globalisation that has since lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty. As well as uniting the Indian peninsular and saving the world from French or German total domination.
@FantasticMrF0x Clarkson is a moron. He makes Britain look and sound pathetic wherever he goes in the world. He's such a bitter man. No doubt he thinks Berkshire or some other part of middle England is the centre of the universe!
All you Britons will be quite pleased or appalled, depending upon your temperament, to know that us North SF Bay Californians will be singing "Rule Britannia" as we reenact some of the memorable moments of the "Proms" at Santa Rosa Junior College's Spring Concert...and yes, I do believe that the British Consulate is invited to our performance. Of course, we couldn't find the orchestral score in all of the United States...we'd have to them shipped in from the UK (seriously).
Understandably, we won't be singing "God Save the Queen" for obvious reasons (lol). What great fun it will be. I might even solo the second verse (I haven't the slightest bit of English ancestry. I am predominately French, less Spanish, much less Dutch, and even less Scottish, and whatever else...American 350-300 years of American heritage). What fun though, right? It'll be quite a sight...of course we're also doing a newly commissioned Beatles medley as well....
@Silasbenjamin I think that it is great that Americans other than me sing music patriotic music of Britain. Some people seem to be appalled that I sing God Save the Queen on the sidewalks and streets of Washington DC, but I don't really care. I love England.
@AllTriadHexachord Haha Hexachord. I just noticed this comment. Seriously. I'll walk down the street singing the British nationalist hymn Jerusalem any day...my theory about singing on the streets in transit is that it will be a musically and culturally enlightening experience for an otherwise dull public...even more so when the music comes from over seas. Lol ;)
Simply Amazing. In an age of when British society is cracking and national pride is at an all time low, there are still signs of strong unity amoungst some
The day the Last Night of the Proms ends is the day I storm Number 10 Downing Street. If anyone wants to change the channel then they can prise the control out of my cold, dead hands.
I wish this was our national anthem. Very few of us care about god or the queen. The vast majority of us can support our country's history (and more importantly, good music).
I personally agree that the National anthem could be better. But on your point about god, the Queen and this countries history you need to understand something. This country would not be this country without the monarchy and christianity. It would still exist obviously. But it would be changed beyond all recognition. France during the Terror comes to mind.
Rousing music. It depicts a time when Britain was indeed "Ruler Of The Waves" in the 18th and 19th centuries. However,if you happened to be having a night out with the lads about that time, there was a good chance that you could be tapped on the head and wake up on board one of HM ships, after being "Pressed" into service. They could flog you, keel haul you, or even hang you if you did not obey orders. "Rule The Waves" certainly, however, I'm not so sure about the "Never Shall Be Slaves" bit.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
nix rule britannia, ruling is over, time to give back ur permanent seat at the UN and moreover time for queing in the line of other very normal countries...
istanbullshit old buddy, when I said "Rule The Waves" I was refering to the period of 18th to 19 centuries. Britain has not done that for some time now addmittedly. However, It does no harm to keep the patriotic spirit alive, for, I belive that something very nasty is lurking in the very near future, and the civilized world will, yet again, have to fight off the aggressor. By the way, I think that you are as German as an Eskimo. Schieben Sie lhren korf auf lhren MASTDARM. Rule Britannia.
whats wrong with being proud of where your born? either your just an ass and is against it, or u obviously live somewhere that your not proud of so u want to spread what your thoughts are to people that like their own country...
no, it does not work like that, i am a proud British Citizen, and i dont care what you say.
dont call me a moron just because you live in a place where you cannot be proud of, so dont go criticising people just because they are proud of their own country, YOU SIR are the moron, and JELOUSLY is what is making you make these dumb comments.
I love how people started whistling along at 2:10!!! It just makes me proud to see how everyone's involved and knows the tune!!! I love being British. My mum and dad went to this as well, you might be able to see them. They look stupid haha.
from the day when we gave birth to the modern world and no boday from any other country, and not the usa can clain that they gave birth to the modern world like Britain did.
@genytoribio thats what they wear if they don't like wearing tails, dont ask me why that is the formal alternative but it is. Does look pretty silly though
In fact we cannot blame only Germany for the WOI. Besides that:
"Deutschland, Deutschland über alles" has nothing to do with something such as: Germany is better than France, Holland and Great Britain. When "DDüa" was written Prusia was just grounded and many Germans had more regional feelings than national. So the text calls Germans to feel German. Not to conquer whole Europe.
Only Hitler tried to make all Germans think it was so... Later they changed the anthem to a Nazi song.
How is it strange? Britain spread freedom and democracy all around the world and has always been a force for good. Germany has historically been a force for pure fucking evil. And besides it's about ruling the waves not people. Britain's navy has always been a huge asset. Even today it is the biggest and best in the world apart from the USA's.
Greetings from you Flemish neighbours across the channel too. You were always the first to defend our little country when attacked by the Germans in world war I as well as II. Rule Brittania
And after all these years of cooperation aganist Kaisers, Nazis and Communists you want to get imperialist with us again. Well if you must... see you in Yorktown buddy. Bring lots of your mates, you'll need them.
great!!! the was right!!! britons never ever ever shall be slave!!! n we will never be slaves!! cause we british rules!!!

It's nice to know some people are proud of their English roots. Sick of hearing how people are 1/64 Irish and proud.
ignorantpom 1 year ago
@AllTriadHexachord Haha Hexachord. I just noticed this comment. Seriously. I'll walk down the street singing the British nationalist hymn Jerusalem any day...my theory about singing on the streets in transit is that it will be a musically and culturally enlightening experience for an otherwise dull public...even more so when the music comes from over seas. Lol ;)

I wish this was our national anthem. Very few of us care about god or the queen. The vast majority of us can support our country's history (and more importantly, good music).
Ohfishyfishyfish 2 years ago 4

"Rule The Waves" certainly, however, I'm not so sure about the "Never Shall Be Slaves" bit.

nix rule britannia, ruling is over, time to give back ur permanent seat at the UN and moreover time for queing in the line of other very normal countries...
istanbulluification1 2 years ago
istanbullshit old buddy, when I said "Rule The Waves" I was refering to the period of 18th to 19 centuries.

@ChiefWiggumBLN
whats wrong with being proud of where your born? either your just an ass and is against it, or u obviously live somewhere that your not proud of so u want to spread what your thoughts are to people that like their own country...
no, it does not work like that, i am a proud British Citizen, and i dont care what you say.
gtasaluversm 2 years ago 4

Strange how "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles" is considered inappropriate and this isn't...
ablaaa 2 years ago
zee germans did try to take over the world twice so that would explain it.
adammiller84 2 years ago
In fact we cannot blame only Germany for the WOI. Besides that:
"Deutschland, Deutschland über alles" has nothing to do with something such as: Germany is better than France, Holland and Great Britain. When "DDüa" was written Prusia was just grounded and many Germans had more regional feelings than national. So the text calls Germans to feel German. Not to conquer whole Europe.
Only Hitler tried to make all Germans think it was so... Later they changed the anthem to a Nazi song.
karel1313 2 years ago
yes we can because we won.
lordchelmswood 2 years ago
How is it strange? Britain spread freedom and democracy all around the world and has always been a force for good. Germany has historically been a force for pure fucking evil. And besides it's about ruling the waves not people. Britain's navy has always been a huge asset. Even today it is the biggest and best in the world apart from the USA's.
