i just would like to point out after reading the comments below that alexander karelin beat the world champian mma fighter from japan without throwing a single punch or submission and the fight ended in a knockout so i would say that wrestling is verry important in mma
The whole wrestling vs bjj argument when it comes mma is silly. Both are very important and neither should be neglected when it comes to being a good grappler in mma. A simple way to put it, you need wrestling to be in control the grappleing and you need bjj to finish the fight. A good tip is if your young, wrestle your ass off in highschool caus its practicly free training and if your good it can get you into a college to further it. Try to do as much bjj inbetween your wrestling and striking
Comparing wrestling to bjj is like comparing boxing to thai. They're kinda similar but they're different and they're both good and both important. All styles are the champion within their own rule set, and mma is no longer about styles it is it's own style, so what is everyone arguing about?
wrestling is more important than jujitsu. Before i knew wrestling i couldnt use jujitsu because a wrestler will keep everything too close for you to be able to work a submission.
I don't understand your argument, the only option for a MMa fighter with a wrestling base is going to the ground, the same way as it is for a fighter with a stand up base to keep the fight standing up -_-
wrestlings intensity no quit attitude paired with the ability to scramble and its elite base and practical and hard takedowns, make it a solid foundation also the missing link to bjj, on the other hand Bjj's submissions and ability to be an attacker from the back is the missing link to wrestling.
in other words, mma fighters should focus on grappling before perfecting standup for those cases when they go up against ppl who love submitting or ground and pound
I think thats the best thing any 1 has said on youtube in a long time every thing is need thats y people should stay out of MMA gyms tell they train ever where else
ok this may sound dumd but my friend said that greco roman is upper body and that folk style is the lower body. and what froms of wrestling do they have?????
In greco you can't do anything to the opponents legs. Folk is not used in olympics and you can attack any part of the body as long as it is not considered an illegal move. There is also freestyle wrestling. I'm not quite to sure about it but i think there's just more leeway with the rules.
I tried this for a month after quitting judo... Couldn't stop doing uchi-matas and seoi-nagae. Couldn't keep myself from leg sweeping and thy throwing so the trainer kicked me out from his class :)) but judo owns this in a no-rule fight.
really, thought this looked a really good combo for BJJ, I thought the takedowns would be a great supplement... Judo scares me cos I've heard about how bad it is on the knees.
Does Greco Roman have a military origin? In mass battle, grappling while standing would be commonplace if the opponent got beyond your weapon. You wouldn't want to go to the ground with your opponent.
But, why would the use of legs hooks not be allowed? Perhaps it has something to do with battle?
greco you cant touch the legs. meaning you cant take shots and that its all throws. you cant touch the legs with your hands, and you cant trip or hook their legs. and the scoring is. 3 point throw means you go from your feet to your back, 5 point throw is when is legs of hips are over your head. a 1 point take down is just go behind basically. and its 2 point when you break your apponents shoulders past a 90 degree angle such as a gut wrench and things on the mat, not on your feet.
Can anyone explain the rules of wrestling to me? What's allowed and what's not allowed? I watch MMA (UFC) and I guess the wrestling you see there is different than the one you see here but I don't know how...
What you see in the UFC is more judo and jiujitsu... not that much wrestling. So get your facts right. Not trying to be mean just informing you that you're looking at the wrong video if you're interesting in mma grappling styles.
No buddy, your actually wrong. Wrestling is more important than judo and jiujitsu in MMA. Randy Countour, Tito Ortiz, Ken Shamrock, Frank Shamrock, Kevin Randlemen, Roger Huerta, and many more All the top fighters in the UFC come from wrestling backrounds.
That's why after only around a year of MMA training, Brock Lesnar is UFC heavyweight champion right? Wrestling is all about control and positioning; and the man with superior control and positioning wins. My jiu-jitsu is far from stellar; I have a good top game, but kinda suck from guard; I've never rolled in gi, so I'm not belted, but I've tapped out a number of purple and brown belts, due to my superior wrestling. Add ground and pound into the mix, and the balance of power shifts even more.
Hay if you suck from guard try a butterfly guard and push out ur make space turn your body fast as u can and shoot forwood u should tack the top after training this move lots Rebelwrestler good luck
Both are important...to use alot of the BJJ techniques you've got to get your opponent down. Wrestling and Judo allow you to get into position to use those techniques with effective takedowns and position control. They're grappling arts and they compliment each other
@RaynardAlcampor Spoken like one who has never clinched with a legit wrestler. All the Jui Jitsu in the world wont help you out scramble a wrestler, and without positional control JJ is pretty damn difficult to apply. Can't say which is more important, but can say for certain that JJ works best when you can get to the ground on your own terms rather than by being dumped on your head.
i don't really understand this sport. at what point is it considered interfering with the legs? i mean, most throws require the hips to switch place specifically with the opponent's legs, and in the suplex from behind you're usually actually touching them. if your feet weren't there, he could step back and fight your throw.
You really have to watch and be around the sport for awhile to understand. It's not like you can't touch the opponents legs. You just can't use leg attack like in freestyle. You can't lock below the waist. Sometimes there is a little give and take from the refs depending on how strict they are.
The diffrence in Freestyle wrestling and Greco roman is that you aint allowed to go on the oppenents leggs in grco roman, and mostly is it girls that goes freestyle, anyways in Sweden. Greco-roman is the Male main wrestling style.. imo
