to be honest i think madara should have teamed up with his brother to take on the first hokage i mean eternal mangekou is good but having two of them is even better and plus they are like killer bee and riakage there a good team
The only problem with that is that Madara over-used his Mangekyou and became blind. Had he not attained his brother's eyes he would have been practically powerless and useless....

Now why would Madara settle for second best, which he would have to do since his brother still possessed the mangekyou? Not to mention the fact it would only be a matter of time before his brother also went blind, and then they would both lose their extra ocular powers. It hasn't been shown yet that you can activate mangekyou TWICE, even with transplanted eyes (and we are not even sure how kakashi activates his mangekyou as far as specifics)

Realistically, IF both Madara and his brother still could see by the time they fought the First for leadership of Konoha, there is no way that Hirashima would take them both on by himself. I don't think the battles were "arranged" but Madara and Hirashima had their rivalry, so if it was Madara and his brother, it would make sense that the first and his brother would pair up to counter that.
Realistically speaking Madara's brother would eventually go blind by then.

@kave213vids My guess is Madara's eyes were already messed up and blind by the time he thought to switch eyes with his bro. Izuna would have ended up blind either way. Maybe If they had know before hand blindness was a consequence they would have switched eyes earlier. Who knows tho.
