I installed an internal 2GB compact flash card in my emax II and the load time is very fast, like a second at the most plus no heat nor noise. The floppy still the same.
@vjrei I would love to know how you did that. I have an Emax II (non hd ver) and I would like to upgrade it as much as possible...anything would help.
@lunastrat Go to scsiforsamplers . com, they have the kit, is just a compact flash card reader with an scsi adaptor. You will need a USB compack flash reader to be able to format the card with a PC or something like that. But you can place it internally OR replace the floppy drive with a CF card and that is it. You can boot from there too, it is just perfect.
Actually you are not testing the analog filters until you modulate something with them. You are testing the A/D convertors. The Emax I is warmer and brighter. The Emax II has more antialiasing steps.
Anyway, the sound is running through an analog board with vca, and also filters(even thought the are wide open). I couldn't choose one of those emax. Both have their unique sound.
@DX5 I have got a third Emax II last week with a bunch of discs. To make long story short (and do not ask me why I have 3 Emax II), I do not like the sound. It is just like in your video, too much compression and lacks of body. I actually cannot believe how Depeche Mode got away with it during World Violation and Devotional tour. The Emax 1 has more body. For me the Ensoniq ASR 10 is 1000 times better but lets see, I may keep just one of my Emax II.
emaxI play the loop too smoother (for the low sampling frequency) than emaxII; but I still prefer the warm SSM filter sound of the emax I (SSM filter are bit better than punchy cem filters)
EMAX I is nicer sounding 12-bit analog warmth and less antialiasing is good in it's own right adds unique character.

Howdy mate,
Thank you for taking your time, to doing this stuff!
In this example i actually prefere the Emax II, because this is a sample of a whole mix. and my ears want a final result sounding Hi-fi.
But when it comes to parts of mix, i prefere the Emax I.
Thanks..

@stewartdahamman I'm not DX5, but it's the Emax I with the analog filters.

There is difference, and it sounds, that Emax II sounds better, than the Emax I.
MajinGohans 2 years ago
It is cleaner.
But I have to say I choose the grainy, low fi Emax I with analog filters :)
DX5 2 years ago
Agreed, choose grainy. Do you find yourself using the Emax I more? What is the load time difference?
RetroElectroville 2 years ago
I think I use both the same.
My emax II has an internal HD, so it is really quick at the time of loading.
The emax I loads from floppy, it can take up to 20-30 secs for a fully loaded disk
