this is about a person whose son has left home to go off to war, and he is saying he must go but probably wont return as he might be killed in battle.
We sing this song in our men's choir for about one year with the solo of the first tenor and every time it's breathtaking, how much feeling this song has in itself! It's a fantstic masterpiece of music and I love it very much, especially when it is performed by the ten tenors - watch out! Greetings from Austria!
Can we lose the homophobia people? This is an achingly beautiful song, and we can interpret it any way we like. And I say that as someone who is Irish, very catholic and very gay. So chill out everyone. :)
ya dannny boy makes me cry a lot also. its just one of those songs. I like keith whitleys song, when you say nothing at all. Thats a song that gets to me a lot. hahaha anyhow. ya this is a good version of dannyboy
Excellent ensemble technique - vowels, sync, intonation - combined with a great arrangement. The first business of entertainers is to KNOW THEIR CRAFT - and this compelling performance is the result.
On the Last Night of the Proms Danny Boy (part of a much longer Fantasia on British Sea Songs)is sung by a collection of local school choirs along side the Ulster Orchestra.
The two men were father and son, so get yer mind out of the gutter.... the son is leaving Ireland to find work, but the father must stay behind. Presumably, the son is going to America, even though both he and his father know that they will probably never see each other again. It happened. A beautiful song based in one of the most beautiful countries in the world. If money were no object, I'd rather live there than here, plus I have relatives still over there and I miss them all.
It was originally intended to be a song from a woman to a man, though it is commonly interpreted to be from a father to a son who has gone off for war.
just thought you may like to know. This choir is the city of derry civic youth choir and some of the male voices and the girls in black are from the codetta, also from derry.
If you search for ..excerpt from the Last Night of the Proms part 5 .. you will see a later version of this from the Proms 2006. Many of the choir members are the same but a little older.Belfast comes in after 5 mins or so.
The most fantastic thing about this video is a very British event like the Proms can now take place in Belfast and be welcomed by both traditions. We've come a long way indeed.

The Irish among all peoples on earth are chosen to show the way in love and strenght which flows from this. They are destined to lead the world to a beter way of being in this respect.
...this song is about loss...the loss of a beloved one, be it a child, a parent, a friend, a neighbour...unlike other animals, we have the privilege of being able to put feelings into music...loss is a noble feeling..."Danny Boy" is a more than noble poem...your performance, more than noble, made me travel to another dimension, where one can wash one's eyes in silence...I won't even try to qualify the arrangement...may God bless you all with a smile, the shortest distance between people :o)
"but how ever anyone can sound good in a choir"...if I understood your words correctly, that anyone can "sound" good in a choir, with all due respect, you're wrong !!!...anyone can LOOK good in a choir would be more correct...humble apologies if I misunderstood your comment...
During some of the worst times of Northern Ireland's "Troubles", this song stood out as an anthem against sectarian violence. On a number of occasions, Irish boxer Barry McGuigan's father Pat sang "Danny Boy" in place of the national anthem. Barry and his father's rendition of "Danny Boy" did their parts in helping end the cycle of violence in Northern Ireland. THAT made the song very meaningful to me.
The melody is Irish, and at least 300 hundred years old. The lyrics to "Danny Boy" were written by an Enlishman. But this has an altogether differnt lyric when sung as an "Air from County Derry".
Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling From glen to glen, and down the mountain side The summer's gone, and all the flowers are dying 'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide. But come ye back when summer's in the meadow Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow 'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so. And if you come, when all the flowers are dying And I am dead, as dead I well may be You'll come and find the place where I am lying
my dad sang with the Yale Whitenpoofs in 1977, and when he saw this, he said you did the best performance of "Danny boy" he's ever seen! I am singing it for my choir, and I wish we were as good at you! The arrangement is excellent! The harmonies are perfect! Thank you!
oh gosh i love this song. im not irish but i was from an irish school and damn i fell in love with this song! this is an amazing arrangement and performance. thanks for sharing

The Last Night of the Proms is one of the most popular classical music concerts in the world, watched and listened to by an audience of many millions around the globe. Proms in the Park now takes the Last Night party to Belfast, Swansea, Manchester and Glasgow as well as London, reflecting the increased interest in the Proms from around the UK. BBC Proms 2006 featured over 70 orchestral concerts at the Royal Albert Hall and a series of weekly chamber music recitals.
They can sing and they are beautiful to boot. Makes me wish my ancestors had stuck it out through the potato famine and stayed there. May I ask where you reside. Proms in the US are high school dances.
On strings and wind doeth this song come alive. Human voices commands the living to seek solice in rememberance. Will ye no come back again? Ah!, I live among spring flowers and the shadows between sun, moon and evening tide. So, you will follow my lead and we will rejoice in complete repose, for life is naught a journey but a stop between the stars.
