'Die Katzen' is 'the catS' - it's plural. The singular is 'die Katze'. And 'Die Mutter, der Hund, und die Katzen mach Arbeit (?) heute.' That is 'The mother, the dog and the cats do work today. They work VERY hard would be 'Sie [die Mutter, der Hund, und die Katze] arbeiten viel.' The grammar should also be 'machEN'. Die Hunden machen einen Kreis. 'The dogs make a circle.' Machen is the infinitive as well as the form for the plurals. At least the articles are correct; people mix those up a lot.
