With all respect for Alfred Deller( !!) but this does not cut it. Too forced ,barely able to pronounce the words (awful pronounciation to bigin with) correctly because short of breath. Listen to Aafje Heynis (here on You tube) and one will be convinced in a flash who can SING this from the heart and with emotion and with absolute breath control.
Alfred Deller is just sublime in this magnificent aria. He has the voice of an angel - utterly captivating and beautiful. Over 50 years later the recording remains as intensely moving as music and the human voice can be.
Is this the 1954 recording of this aria? Sung very modestly, very much in contrast with the rather more self-confident singers of today. But in complete harmony with the unique beauty of his voice...
Muy resio la musica de conratenores muy suave y asi ya que personas como nosotros los contratenores avemos 1 de cada 1000, asi que sigan suviendo musica de nosotros =*)
Please listen to Janet Baker with the Acamdemy of St Martin in the Field recording. That is how it should be performed. This is schmolz in the extreme (and the orchestra is not that great).
i am comparing this to andreas scholl's boring, scholastic performance as well as jay carter's and i don't know who else's. deller just sings this beautifully... too bad about the lousy orchestra.
@marcellny Finally someone who could say it in words ! Musically a miracle and a coloration of voice as no one else has done it and of course with a deep comprehension of the words. Thank you for posting this comment !
shameful orchestra.... magnificent deller. i can't get over that beautiful interpretation of his, insouciant, and yet profound. who led those careless fiddles????
@AlsatianCousin hey... saw your comment about your liking the orch. i guess to each his own. i prefer my orchestras to play in tune even when leaning into anyone's singing as you put it. my point is.... he is singing it so magnificently.... all the out of tune playing harms a masterful performance even if he rises above it. be well.
Deller's voice is so gentle and sweet here - it speaks to the lyric well. I love his work. Countertenors worldwide owe him so much. He was bravely passionate about The Voice.

Um wow, I thought I'd already heard all the best renditions of this. Although the band should be ashamed of them selves in a few spots. Mr. Deller is rather amazing.
What a heartbreaking rendering! How tender, how delicately phrased! A little over the top, but that's what it took back in 1954, to draw attention to this wonderful work. It is vulnerability manifested.

Here is the third comment only, in spite of 5 months already of on-line publication.
so, the register in which Deller excels... seems much too refined for our time.
And I even lack the words to formulate the praise he would deserve.

Wow, again Deller use his warm and sweet voice, this video is so great!
Thank you, thank you, thank you, lovely and amazing.

I am stumped ....
Well ... Alfred Deller is a great singer and 'Vergnugte Ruh, beliebte seelenlust ' by Johann Sebastian Bach.... is the greatest aria.
Thank you very much.
