They did. The picture you were likely looking at to come to this idea was the exit hole on one of the inner walls, where the planes head broke through. If you actually go to a site that isn't bias, you will find picture that show exactly how the plane went in.

The plane absolutely diminished upon impact, leaving only small pieces. It is understandable that there is going to be questions, but when looked at sensibly, it makes sense.
