I think in Half Life 2 Episode 3, Gordon should obviously go to the Borealis, and whatever he finds there he should use to weaken the Combine and then everyone on earth bans together and completely destroys the Combine in an 8 Hour War. That would be badass.

Or it should somehow tie in the Portal gun.

The ship is a "research vessel" made by Aperture Science to try to beat Black Mesa financially, in other words, Aperture created the Borealis to make more money than Black Mesa. But, in doing so, Aperture didn't take necessary precautions with the project and the Borealis vanished, with everyone aboard, and even took some of the dry dock with it as well. The Borealis contains some sort of super power that can beat the Combine but Eli insists it must be "destroyed"

For those of you that didn't know. Hl2 Takes place in future somewhere in Russia, I assume near Alaska the Borealis is somewhere near by and by the cars I guess Russia was still Soviet Union. HL1 I think starts in the 80's or something but when I see the osprey I get confused. Maybe SU did collapse but never got back up on it's feet.

See, I get that they were experimenting with portal tech, but why so needless? Why build an entire dock and a boat to test? Why not just test the tech on rocks or scrap metal? Seems odd for sure.

Also, didn't they say in Ep2 that the ship vanished with a chunk of it's drydock? Drydock seems fine to me in Portal2...

In fact, how did Kleiner know anything about an Apeture ship that was 4kms underground in the first place; nevermind what tech it had onboard...

If you pay attention, you'll see that both companies were in the "portal race", like the space race in the 50s and 60s. Black Mesa was making strides in creating portals, while Aperture only made a gun that requires moon rocks to work correctly. Therefore Black Mesa is superior. All AS did was screw themselves over.
