He was the boy in his prime, most definitely. I'd put up against any middleweight to light heavyweight champ and they would be on for an ass wipping in his prime.
Shame to see Roy carry on as long as he did. He really could of gone down as the greatest of all time at one point. That trip down back to light heavy was silly.
We seen with Chris Byrd just how much it fucks up your punch resistance.
When people watch the videos back they'll know just how fucking great Jones was.
So talented, and yet Jones conveniently avoided all the big names he should have faced during his prime, like Calzaghe, Benn, Eubank, Collins, Jackson, Hopkins... Roy Jones was a good fighter, but he was never really tested against top opposition, so we will never really now wether he was great or not.
@LegionarioCruel he beat hopkins when both were young and when he challenged him again at 2002-2003,hopkins didnt want any...all the others were b-class fighters comparing to hopkins,toney,griffin...
@kypselialani14 - I can't agree with you. Hopkins was a nobody back in their first fight (remember he started very late in pro boxing); Toney was a light heavyweight fighting at super middle (he weighed in 181.5 lbs in a fight just six months earlier). Griffin was good, but exception made for the infamous DQ win over Jones, he failed every attempt at a world title he ever had. Nigel Benn made 10 succesful defenses; Calzaghe retired undefeated... Jones' record simply lacks big wins.
@Famas54321 because he was promoted right...he was a great boxer but also he was playing the show business game very good...he did many things that made people to discuss about him for good or bad reasons...
shit man, as a fighter trying to make to the top i watch this video everyday when i wake up. time waits for no man. sometimes i wish it would have waited a little longer for roy
i was never a rjj fan, but he was super talented. his down fall was a bigger shock than tyson vs buster douglas to me. i hope the man retires and doesn't end up like ali.
I wish Jones had either stayed at LHW or once he went heavyweight never went back down. Roy was never the same after he went back down from 194. Slow, arm punching, no stamina, no chin, heavy slow legs. It was sad. In his prime nobody wanted a piece, after he lost a step or two they lined up. Now he is a shot, old, puffy version of his former self. Please stop boxing Roy, don't end up like Ali, you have kids, and fans that love you.
Those were not excuses Tarver you learned that the hard way against Hopkins it is a fact that Jones draining himself to make weight was what changed him forever I am glad you learned that when you fought Hopkins but I can't believe you still refuse to admit that the Jones you fought was no longer himself
Still my all time favorite boxer (Bernard hopkins close second). Despite the recent upsets he is still one of the greatest ever. They should make a movie about him.
@blackchang1981 so true i mean how can you not he had so many moves one of the most entertaining fighters ever had it all then lost it antonio tarver would probably be the portrayed bad guy he's a punkass bitch whose only notable wins were from a drained RJJ and a glen johnson that beat his ass in their first fight
i knew some niggas trying to do that triple hook, 2 out of the 3 of them are having shoulder relocation!!! for all kids watching this: "DO NOT FUCKIN TRY THIS AT HOME, SCHOOL OR EVEN BOXING RINGS."
How easily the world forgets who were the best when they were in their primes and how much this sport takes from fighters who've done this all their natural lives. How easily does a person forget all the blood sweat and tears this sport requires just to be the strongest or best hands down. I'll never forget it nor will any other boxer in the world.
Roy jones jr is defo a G.O.A.T yes he had many wins and some of the best fights ever jones is the only boxer to go up so much wieght and own the title yes he went on a loss streak but never on hes prime all fighters have to lose
for all you haters 'Roy Jones Jr' is the only boxer to start off as a light middleweight to go ahead and win a heavyweight title - that says something doesn't it?
@ShitWrangler yeah jones did toney didn't, you replied james toney to some guy talking about jones being the only light middleweight getting a heavyweight title
My second favourite fighter ever great boxer with immense skill, i just wish great boxers knew when to quit, its heart breaking seeing the guys you idolize getting knocked out time after time at the end of their careers.
I hate the way Roy Jones Jr loses. After getting HW and won the first fight with Tarver, he should've quit. I mean that guy was like 34 or 35 that time, and he cut like 25 pounds he trained for fighting in HW.
And I hate the people who says Roy doesn't have fundamentals. At least he had his right hand up when Tarver landed the KO shot. Roy did try to roll with the punch against Johnson. Only except Roy was too old to take a punch. He would have survived it in his prime.
@Fifa12Packman yea yea yea look like we got ourselves some kind of a joker here! you may all laugh at him now that he's waaaaaaaay past his prime and is getting smashed by all these lesser-than-stellar boxers out there. BUT let me tell you this: NOBODY could fuck with rjj in his heydays! He even made excellent boxers like James Toney look like a fool out there! A true P4P king. Period. Show some respect.
I've never considered Roy a boxer, he was a force of nature. He came, he conquered, and stood on his throne for years, until it all came crashing down in two quick fights. There was no slow steady decline, it seemed almost overnight. Truly one of the most enigmatic characters in the sport if I've ever seen one.
I LOT of ppl try to say Gamboa has THE fastest hands in boxing, and one could make a decent case for it.....
But in his prime, I still say RJJ had THE fastest hands in all of boxing history and certainly the fastest reflexes, although a lot of guys like Hamed for instance come pretty damn close. It was a shame when RJJ finally fell out of his prime. We may never see another like him again.
@gibememoni Gotta agree partially. I think he was just as fast BUT considering he carried around a lot more weight and could still pp off 6-10 punch combinations in a couple seconds or hit guys before they saw it coming, thats what puts him ahead. He carried the same kinds of whipping speed and reflexes but with a lot more weight. But when he fell out of his prime, what a crash.
@gibememoni I think that roy jones was pound for pound the fastest boxer there ever was, and its hard to be faster then him EVEN at a lower weight but yeah they were faster
guys , you all remember how Mohammed Ali boxed?, Roy is the new Ali, ofc not that popoular, but i belive that this guy can be as good as him, well almost... the footdances..sick, fast like lightning, did you know that roy jones and mohammed is the only boxer in the world who can throw a punch between the time you blink?
I always appreciated Roy Jones the cultural icon, but I never took time to sit back and really appreciate him in his prime; thanks making this incredible video.
Roy really needs to quit...I hate seeing P4P best being knocked out over and over again like that. He used to lopsidedly beat the shit out of other "p4p", but now he loses to cans today. It sucks.
@Mar87Lin roy jones jr in his prime was one of if not the best boxer ever in the calzaghe fight he had lost all his reflexes and was pretty much target practice he took a beating but if it had been 10 years earlier he would of destroyed calzaghe

The greatest fighters win more then just a couple of belts. The greatest boxers of all time win belts in different weight classes. Benn doesn't deserve to be in the same breath of Jones.
"Roy had a soul of a cock fighter he would have fought to the death", in english that sounds weird, "Roy tiene la alma de un GALLO, que pelea hasta la MUERTE!"
@Man0nThaM00n Benn? If your talking about Nigel Benn he was just another boxer that won a weak belts like the World Boxing Council over in United Kingdom. Benn needed to win a real fight for a real belt against real opponents. A good record against pushovers doesn't make him a good boxer.
@2blown2know maybe Roy would have crushed Benn(wbc) and Eubank(wbo) but we'll never really know. But I remember a lot of people wanting to see a unification vs. either guy and it didn't happen. Just wondering, you said the wbc belt is weak so what do you consider a REAL belt?
@Man0nThaM00n Sorry typed that kinda wrong the WBC belt isnt weak how and who he faced for the belt is weak. Im not trying to downplay Benn, Eubank, which are top notch fighters. But the thought of Benn a middleweight fighting a former middleweight that was knocking out lightheavyweights and heavyweights is silly.
@2blown2know my biggest complaint of Jones was that at his peak there were plenty of good fighters around the world in his weight but he was only fighting the top U.S. based fighters because the European fighters were also stars in their countries and demanded star purses. Jones always had to be the star and the center of the show. I'm not saying that any of the Euro guys would have beat him, but he never faced them so we cant say. Michelzewski was another guy he never faced from his era.

real fans know that Roy Jones never faced Benn, Eubank, or McClellan.

@Man0nThaM00n Real Fans know he faced Bernard, Toney, Griffen, Harding. Many others on his way to going 41-1. 1 loss DQ

yea his resume is solid but i think most fans really wanted to see him fight a guy like Benn and it never happened.
Man0nThaM00n 3 months ago
@Man0nThaM00n Benn? If your talking about Nigel Benn he was just another boxer that won a weak belts like the World Boxing Council over in United Kingdom. Benn needed to win a real fight for a real belt against real opponents. A good record against pushovers doesn't make him a good boxer.
2blown2know 3 months ago
@2blown2know maybe Roy would have crushed Benn(wbc) and Eubank(wbo) but we'll never really know. But I remember a lot of people wanting to see a unification vs. either guy and it didn't happen. Just wondering, you said the wbc belt is weak so what do you consider a REAL belt?
Man0nThaM00n 3 months ago
