I have a set of moth blown border pipes made in Canada that sound like the original border pipes sounded.. They revived this type in the early 1900's calling them "children's bagpipes" but mine have the single stock drone arrangement, with bass, tenor and baritone drones, unlike the children's bagpipes which had the highland pipe drone arrangement. Mine sound exactly like a set of highland pipes, except 40% less volume and a richer drone sound. At $888.00 they are a better deal
Hearing you play in honour of your Dad brings tears to these old eyes, I will have my new set of smallpipes in the next week or so, and hope my Granddaughters will honour Me so when My time comes. Hope you do not mind if I load your videos on My Myspace playlist. Slainte.
Beautuful tune.. played with so much feeling. After I saw your video back in 2007, you were the inspiration for me to take up border pipes. I have a beautiful set in G (which means they're huge!) by Ian Corrigan of Deerness Pipes. As there are no tutors as far as I am aware, I am teaching myself. These were custom made in African Blackwood, yey/elm/hawthorn inlay with sterling silver ferrules. The sound is half-way between a GHB and a smallpipe (which I also have from Lauriebeck).
Yep they are Hamish Moore pipes in A. And for those of you that don't know Vicki and her husband Jonny have recorded a number of CD's both as a duo and with a band called Serious Kitchen. Many of the tunes are written by both Vicki and Jonny. I love 'em. Keep it up girl.x
Actually, they are not smallpipes at all... They are called border pipes. Also known as lowland pipes.. It looks like this set was made by Hamish Moore.
@drogoscg1 No you are not wrong. These are different from Uilean pipes, though technically you could still call them 'Uilean' because that words means 'elbow' in Irish gaelic and these are also bellow-blown by the elbow. These are scottish bagpipes, but from the lowlands, near the 'border' with England hence the name. Irish Uilean pipes can play two octaves, and have many keys on the drones to play harmonies with the chanter. These do not and cannot do that.
This tune has become very popular. Its regularly suggested to new pipers on the Bob Dunsire forms. Very good work....your father would be proud. His pipes were beautiful.
I am Scottish and ex British Soldier and have attended many parades, including the Trooping The Colour. This lament is very good and brings a tear to my eyes.
Good God, Woman! NOT GOOD??? You bringin' tears to my eyes with that! If you don't hie yourself to a studio and put your WONDERFUL talent out for all it would be a bloody waste. Don't be so hard on yourself...your Dad taught you well, I'd say. Good on you!
Vicki, Why criticise yourself for playing so well. That was a beautiful lament in your dads memory and that in itself deserves no critcism. I am a solo piper myself and indeed composed a lament for my grandson, who died at birth. I play it once a year for myself and my daughter on the anniversary of the wee mans passing, you should be proud and your dad will be too.
Vicki, as a highland piper myself I would rate your composition amongst the best I,ve heard. I composed a lament for my grandson who died at birth and I play once a year. You are a credit ot not only yourself but your late father. Well done you.
Hey, you know, that was really good; you're a lot better than you give yourself credit for. After all, you wrote such a beautiful lament in a very highland fashion. And while it does not develop and increase in complexity, it definitely approaches the aptitude of piobaireachd.
have you published this tune, or must I learn it off the fingers? (not a hardship....)
Nice playing, by the way - In my experience, Hamish Moore pipes aren't very forgiving (some would say 'horribly unstable')
I have a set of Garvie Border pipes, and they are the easiest to play with the steadiest reeds and best tone of ANY Border pipes I've ever heard or played!
I like this very much. I have just purchased a set of kitchen pipes from Oliver Seeler. they are two drone pipes, that sound with three practice chanter reeds. I would very much, like to learn this tune. I do plan to move on to more standard three drone small pipes, in time.
You bought a Nyckelharpa! Unusual, but really nice. I once dated a swedish girl who got me interested in them. Nice piping. i'm trying to get a set of lowland pipes. GHB playing has given me tinitus unfortunately. I like your smallpipe playing too!
very good pipper
